Weekly Update – Week of October 11, 2021

Weekly Update

Baseball: Red Sox and Dodgers win the Wild Card spots. Playoffs begin. HOU, BOS, ATL lead 2-1 and other series are tied. Astros more sign stealing? Pujols in lineup for Dodgers game 3.

Basketball-NBA: Preseason begins next week. Irving allowed to practice but will still miss home games.

Football-NCAAF: #1 Alabama upset! Epic Red River Rivalry. #3 Iowa leads Big 10. Arkansas Ole Miss shootout Big 12 style.

Football-NFL: Week 5 recap. 2 finger injuries in Rams/Seahawks game. Chiefs turnover troubles continue. Chargers score 26 in 4Q. 1 team undefeated left; 2 winless teams. Gruden gets in trouble for emails in 2011.

Golf: Im shoots 62 to win Shriners by 4.

Olympic Sports: Boston marathon runs today.

Baseball-MLB:

  • Yankees lost to the Red Sox in the AL wild card game and it started in the first inning. The Red Sox scored 2 runs in the 1st with a 2-run homer and never looked back. The Boston team never trailed, sending the Yankees home and their season finished.

  • The Cardinals Dodgers game was the exact opposite. The Cardinals scored a run in the first inning off a wild pitch. Then the Dodgers tied it back up in the 4th with a HR. However LF Chris Taylor was the hero of the game when he scored a 2-run HR in the 9th inning to extend the LA team’s season. If LA had lost, it would’ve been one of the only teams in history to win over 100 games and not make playoffs. Its unheard of.
  • Boston lead the Rays series 2-1 before their game tonight. The Red Sox got a huge break after this ball was ruled a ground-rule double. CF Kevin Kiermaier hit a ball all the way to the right field fence but it bounced inside the field, then hit a Red Sox player and bounced over the wall. If the ball had stayed inside the fence, 3B Yandy Diaz would’ve easily made it around to score who was on 2nd before the play in question. However the umps ruled it a ground-rule double which means that runners on base only advance 2 bases. That put Diaz back at 3rd and the score remained tied 4-4. The Red Sox hit a walk-off homer the next half-inning to take the win.
  • Sign stealing is being thrown around again with, you guessed it, the Astros. White Sox relief P Ryan Tepera hinted that some sketchy things have gone on and he suspects those to have continued this post season. Chicago won 12-6 when they returned to their field (16 KOs) vs losing the first 2 games in Houston. FYI sign stealing is legal if it is done with the naked eye but Houston has been in trouble for using video cameras and banging on trash cans. Game 4 has been postponed due to weather.
  • Albert Pujols will be starting at 1B in Game 3 for the Dodgers vs the Giants. This will be Pujols’ first playoff start since 2014 with his former team the Angels.

Basketball-NBA:

  • Preseason has begun with the regular season kicking off on 10/19.
  • Kyrie Irving has been cleared to practice with the Nets but not play at home games. All of this is due to the COVID vaccine mandate. Irving has been outspoken against the vaccine but he is allowed to practice now as the practice facility for the Net was deemed a ‘private office building.’ Irving could lose $17MM if he misses the entire season due to various locations’ vaccine mandates.
  • 76ers Ben Simmons has not changed his stance that he wants to be traded but he still has $147MM and 4 years left on his contract. Simmons was talking of a trade ever since Game 7 loss against the Hawks (where Simmons passed the ball instead of taking the wide open dunk that was right in front of him. That would’ve tied the game.

Football-NCAAF:

  • Where do I even start this weekend?? There were 6 loses in the Top 25. And if you thought the Red River rivalry was going to be the biggest news coming out of the weekend, you were wrong.
    • #1 Alabama lost to unranked Texas A&M 38-41. The Aggies controlled the game early leading 17-7 after the first quarter. They were still leading at half before Alabama started looking like normal and crawling back. The Tide did end up taking the lead in the 4th quarter with 5 min left in the game. And just when you thought ‘oh well that was a nice run but here we go again’ Calzada throws a 25yrd TD to tie it back up. The Aggies came up with a huge 3 and out stop making Bama punt and K Smalls hits a perfect FG to hand Alabama their first loss of the season.

      • Let’s go over the records that fell with the L for Bama:
        • 100 straight wins vs unranked opponents (that goes back to 2007)
        • Undefeated (24-0) of Nick Saban vs his former assistants
        • 19 game winning streak overall which was the longest streak in the FBS
    • GameDay was at the state fair of Texas for the Red River Showdown between #6 Oklahoma and #21 Texas. It looked to finally be going the Longhorns way after losing 8 of the last 10 after just 2 minutes of game time, the horns were up 14-0. First play of the game, UT scored. Then they blocked an OU punt and scored 2 plays later. Texas led 28-7 after 1Q & 38-20 at half. It was all orange until the final 10 min of game time. OU chipped away at the lead after benching Spencer Rattler (déjà vu much?) for true freshman Caleb Williams. OU scored the game tying TD with 10 min to go in the game, kicked back off to UT, who fumbled it on the 18. OU scored on the next play to lead for the first time 48-41. But there was still 7 min left in the game… UT scored the next TD on a 31 yard bomb. We’re tied again. Then OU gets the ball and has to score a FG (with a kicker who has had many FGs over 50). However it wasn’t needed as RB Brooks found a hole and took it in the endzone with 3 seconds left in the game. Put this down as one of the best OU/tx games in history. There had never been a comeback as big as this in the rivalry history and Texas had never lost after holding a 21-point lead.
    • Iowa beat 4. Penn St in a Top-5 showdown. Penn St had the advantage early, leading 14-3 after 1Q but after their staring QB Sean Clifford went down early in 2Q. And the game slowly turned from there. Iowa does what it does best, they forced turnovers and got 4 during the game. The final interception was to seal the victory. Iowa is now ranked #2.
    • Arkansas vs 17. Ole Miss was also an insanely offensive game with the Rebels winning 52-51. Arkansas scored a TD in the final second of the game. Then it was decision time for HC Sam Pittman, tie the game with the extra point kick and go into OT or win the game on the road against #17 by a 2-point conversion? Well they went for it and missed.
    • Loses: 1. Alabama, 4. Penn St, 10. BYU, 13. Arkansas, 18. Auburn, 21. Texas

  • Week 7 looks to be much tamer after one of the best weekends in college football in a long time. Only 2 ranked matchups and 7 teams in the Top 25 on byes. College GameDay is headed back to Athens, GA for their matchup against Kentucky.
    • Upset watch: 4. Oklahoma (watch for the hangover game), 11. Kentucky (although that wouldn’t be an upset) 12. Oklahoma St, 19. BYU, 22. NC St

Football-NFL:

  • The Week 5 gist…
    • The Patriots beat the Texans after trailing 22-9 by scoring 16 unanswered points. There were also 3 missed PATs in this game.
    • It was a tale of 2 finger injuries in the Rams vs Seahawks game. Stafford managed his well getting the W but Russell Wilson had his finger dislocated in the 3rd He only attempted 1 more drive after that happened and threw his first interception of the season in this game.
    • The Chiefs turnover troubles continue to get worse. They had 4 in the game against the Bills, who won 38-20 in the rematch of last year’s AFC title game.
    • The Chargers won 47-42 against the Browns, scoring 26 points in the 4th quarter. The 89 point total makes the game in the top 24 scoring totals of all time in the NFL.
    • The Lions remain win-less losing to a last-minute FG by the Vikings. The Jaguars are also still win-less but there might be hope across the pond this weekend.
    • The Cardinals sneak away to continue their undefeated run 5-0 after winning against the 49ers 17-10.

  • Raiders HC Jon Gruden is in some hot water after some emails from 2011 were published saying the NFLPA’s pres DeMaurice Smith (who is black) had ‘lips the size of michellin tires’ and then a vulgar comment about Roger Goodell. Gruden says that the term rubber lips is used to describe someone who is lying and that’s what he meant at the time (lockout and failed negotiations). His team rallied around him calling him a ‘players coach’ and aren’t focused on the emails.
  • Sunday’s game vs the Cowboys had the Giants dropping like flied. RB Saquon Barley, QB Daniel Jones, WR Kenny Golladay all left the game with injuries. Sticking with the injury report, Bengals QB Joe Burrow was taken to the hospital for a possible throat contusion. He is expected to be ok and played the entire game including OT in the 25-22 loss to the Packers.
  • Case of the Mondays

Golf:

  • Sungjae Im won the Shriners after an amazing -9 final round. During his final round of 62, Im sunk 7 birdies in 8 holes to win by 4 over Matt Wolff. The final score of 24 under par ties the tournament record set by Webb Simpson and Ryan Moore in 2013 & 2012 respectively. This is Im’s 2nd win on the PGA tour after he won the Honda Classic in 2020. He was also PGA Tour ROY in 2019.

Olympic Sports:

  • Boston Marathon runs today after a cancellation in 2020 and a 6 month delay this year. There are a couple of changes this year besides the season. Runners will start in a rolling start, meaning there’s no waiting for the gun. Also the field of runners was cut by a third. The cancellation in 2020 was the first time this race had not been run in some form or fashion since 1897. Runners who compete must either have their vaccine or test negative. KEN Benson Kipruto and Diana Kipyogei won the marathon in the 8th KEN sweep in 21 years.
    • Men’s winning time: 2:09.51 (won by 46 seconds)
    • Women’s winning time: 2:24.45 (won by 23 seconds)

TL; DR, no problem. Here’s the link to the podcast instead.
