Super Bowl LIII and everything else you wanted to know about the Super Bowl including commercials!
When was the first Super Bowl?
- 1967 between the Chiefs and the Packers (final score: 10-35). This was after the 1966 season between 2 competing leagues, the American Football League (‘AFL’) and the National Football League (‘NFL’), instead of divisions like its played today. Vince Lombardi (you should know that name from Football Famous Names to Know) was the coach of the Packers at the time. The Super Bowl trophy is called the Vince Lombardi trophy after the coach that won the first two Super Bowls.
- Interesting fact about the first Super Bowl, it was the only one to be simulcast by 2 TV networks: CBS and NBC.
Why is the Super Bowl expressed in roman numerals?
- Organizers did not want it to be confusing as the Super Bowl is played in a new year than the NFL season was played. For example: this Super Bowl represents the winners of their respective divisions for the 2018 season but it is played in 2019… So do you call it the 2019 Super Bowl or the 2018 Super Bowl? To make things clearer, we use roman numerals. Super Bowl 50 was the only Super Bowl (before Super Bowl V when the roman numeral notations were started) to not use roman numerals because Super Bowl L was too unappealing for marketing purposes.
- This question also appears on my ‘Dumb’ Questions You Don’t Want to Ask Your BF page.
- A very quick guide to reading roman numerals: I = 1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000. And you cant have more than 3 of one roman numeral in a row. Therefore, the next Super Bowl will not be LIIII it will be LIV (think of it as 50 + one before 5 so 4= Super Bowl 54)
Who has played in the most Super Bowls?
- Appearances: New England Patriots (10)
- Wins: Steelers (6)
- 4 teams have won all the Super Bowls they have played in: Ravens (2), Saints (1), Jets (1), Buccaneers (1)
- Last years Super Bowl Champion: Philadelphia Eagles
- Teams who have not won a Super Bowl: Chargers, Titans, Cardinals, Bengals, Panthers, Falcons, Vikings and Bills
- Teams to never even played in a Super Bowl: Browns, Jaguars, Lions and Texans
No more about the Saints debacle?
- As a matter of fact, there is… Roger Goodell gave his comment on the blown call today, 10 days after the game, saying the “officials are human.” Drew Brees gives his statement after the blown call below straight from the Saints’ twitter feed:
What do I need to know about this Super Bowl?
- It is played THIS Sunday February 3rd at 5:30pm on CBS.
- Patriots are favored by 2.5 points and O/U is 56.5 as of 1/29/19.
- The game will be played in Atlanta, GA at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Cardinals and Atlanta United FC (soccer). This is the first Super Bowl to be played in this stadium.
- Gladys Knight will preform the National Anthem
- Maroon 5 is the half time show but not appearing at the pregame press conference. No questions about Kaepernick please.
- Tom Brady going for 6th Super Bowl ring, working on that second hand
- The Rams as a franchise is going for its 2nd Super Bowl win, while the Patriots are going for their 6th (which would tie the Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins).
Who is the better QB?
- Well Tom Brady is arguably the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time – because I know my mom reads my blog and had no idea what this means).
- I don’t think there is much of an argument here but lets compare for fun.
Jared Goff | Tom Brady | |
Jersey # | 16 | 12 |
Age | 24 | 41 |
Height | 6’4″ | 6’4″ |
Weight | 225 | 222 |
Draft Pick | 1st | 199th |
Rookie Contract | $27.9MM | $231.5k* |
College | Cal | Michigan |
College Passing % | 62% | 62% |
# of Super Bowl appearances | 1 | 9 |
# of Super Bowl wins | 0 | 5 |
*contract amount provided by Spotrac |
- Jared Goff came from a very different place than Tom Brady. I do not mean location because actually both are originally from the bay area but I mean as far as their careers go. Its basically the veteran vs the rookie.
- The Rams actually traded up (with the Titans) to get get #1 draft pick to get Goff in 2016.
- Brady was drafted in the 6th round but now holds the longest tenure of a QB for one team with 19 years and is the winning-est QB of all time. He is making his 9th appearance in the big game; that means that Tom Brady has been in 17% of all Super Bowls ever played.
The coaches argument: Experience or the Young Talent?
- Bill Belichick is the longest tenured active coach in the NFL and is 2x the age of the Ram’s coach at 66 years old. Belichick has the record for the most playoff wins with 30 and 3rd most regular season wins of all time with 261. He is the only head coach in history with 5 Super Bowl wins (this does not include the 2 Super Bowls he won as a Defensive Coordinator for the Giants).
- Belichick started his coaching career as an assistant for the Colts working for $25/week.
- His first head coaching job was for the Browns in 1991
- Belichick played Center and TE for Wesleyan as well as playing on the lacrosse and squash team. He was even captain of the lacrosse team his senior year.
- Sean McVay was the youngest head coach ever when he took the top job in LA at 30 years old in 2017. McVay is also the youngest coach to have a team in the Super Bowl. Think about it, Tom Brady is 8 years older than the Rams’ head coach.
- McVay began his career as a receivers coach at age 22, younger than most the WRs he was coaching. Although his salary is unavailable we can assume it was for considerably more than $25/week.
- He is also dating a Ukrainian model. Life is hard.
Any other players I should know?
- Rob Gronkowski (“Gronk”) – Patriots – TE – #87
- 2x Super Bowl Champion
- This is the guy who your bf probably wanted as his TE on his fantasy team but didn’t pay off as much this year as he usually does (only 11th highest fantasy points of TEs). He’s known for making some killer blocks and catching some quick passes from Brady (watch him closely on 3rd down). He fumbled for the first time since 2012 this season and is rumored to be close to retirement.
- Julian Edelman – Patriots – WR – #11
- 2x Super Bowl Champion
- Edelman usually catches the ball ~7xs per game and during this off season became the 2nd NFL player to have 100 postseason receptions (besides Jerry Rice). Although, he was 20th in total fantasy points for WRs behind both Rams WRs (Woods and Cooks). We’ll see who has the better game on Sunday.
- Todd Gurley (pronounced Girly – yes he probably got teased in school but he’s making big bucks now) – Rams – RB – #30
- Gurley was the 2nd freshman at Georgia ever to rush over 1,000 yards; the other was Herschel Walker. Saying he’s fast would be an understatement as he joined the Georgia track team for a year and represented the USA in high school at the World Youth Championships in Athletics. He was drafted 10th to the Rams in 2015 and proceeded to win Rookie of the Year. He was the 4th highest point scorer in fantasy football this season of any position (so your bf would’ve been very happy week to week if he had Gurley on his team).
- Ndamukong Suh (pronounced En-dahm-oo-kahn Sew) – Rams – DT – #93
- This defensive tackle is known for playing dirty and has been fined over $216k so far in the NFL. Expect him to have at least one Personal Foul call during the game. He was known for this even in his college days at Nebraska, however he also was a Heisman trophy finalist and won the Lombardi award in college.

- Tom Brady is tied with the most Super Bowl rings of any player with Charles Haley. he would surpass Haley this year with a Patriots win
- The Rams franchise was started in Cleveland, then moved to LA (1946) then to St. Louis (1995) and is now back in LA (2016)

- The biggest spread was 18.5 points favoring the 49ers who won over the Chargers 49-23.
