Football

Explanations

  • #GFHint: In the 2nd half, coaches will save their TOs to use at the end of the 4th quarter (and sometimes the 2nd quarter) to stop the clock.
  • #GFHint: Keep in mind that they will actually pick to receive the kick (meaning they will be offense first) or defer which means they get to pick if they will start the second half as offense, which most do.
  • #GFHint: A drive can contain multiple first downs
  • #GFHint: A punt is never called a kick!
  • #GFHint: To sound impressive, if a team gets in the redzone but doesn’t score a TD, say something like “Ugh you have to score every time you get in the redzone or we don’t have a hope of winning this game.”
  • #GFHint: If the QB gets sacked, you can say “Ahhh man! Where was the O line?!” meaning that the offensive line did not do their job of protecting the QB
  • #GFHint: Odell Beckham Jr is usually one of the most sought after players in Fantasy Football
  • #GFHint: Most people think Dan Marino has won the Super Bowl but he has not! He has played in the Super Bowl against Joe Montana but lost.

  • #GFHint since some of you asked: The OT rules in the NFL are much different than in college. In college, you almost always give your opponent the ball first if you win the coin toss, that way you know what you have to do to win the game (FG, TD or any points at all). However, in the NFL, if the team who has first possession scores a TD, then the game is over. No rebuttal for the other team. If they only score a FG, then the opponent gets a turn in which if they score a TD, the game is over.
    • Why does it work that way? Seems like it puts too much on a literal coin toss…
      • Well that’s a valid point. The NFL however considers that most teams should not be able to score a TD on every drive. The other team’s defense should be better than that. Think of it like an SEC game in college football. Heavy defensive games and therefore lower scores meaning less TDs. However, now with teams like the Chiefs who score a lot of points very quickly, the NFL might one day have to change the OT policy.
  • #GFHint: I will post this as soon as College GameDay does. It will be very impressive if when someone asks where College GameDay is, you can answer! Major GF points! Its easily the top question I used to get – I always made it a point to know. Follow them on twitter!
  • #GFHint: This new fair catch rule is going to be used a lot. This rule will cut down on those hard hits on the receiver that can result in injury.
  • #GFHint: Power 5 Team means a school in one of the major 5 conferences: ACC, Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12 or SEC
  • #GFHint: Did you know that College GameDay tried not to go to the same campus more than 1x per year. There are too many schools and usually too many good games to justify it.
  • #GFHint: Each team and their fans put their name first on the Red River Rivalry so you will hear it called both ways, but since I am a Sooner, on this website it will be called the OU/TX game
  • #GFHint: Notre Dame football does not technically belong to any conference. The rest of their sports play in the ACC. BYU and Army also fall under the independent from a conference category.
  • #GFHint: NFL Preseason games realllllly don’t matter. This is a time for teams to give other players playing time that need snaps. Thus why you wont see the normal starters, especially the older QBs play in any of these games. I know in sports its hard to believe that games don’t matter but in this case, it’s true.
  • #GFHint: the new OT rules was implemented after the 2018 LSU vs Texas A&M game went into the 7th OT leaving both teams beaten up and playing into the wee hours of the night. Originally two-point conversion attempts began in the 5th OT but it was moved to the 3rd OT this year. It is supposed to make it shorter and more entertaining to watch. And with 2 offensive powerhouses it should be fun to watch but with Penn St vs Illinois which ended regulation tied at 10 a piece, it was just kinda sad (cue: whomp whomp sound effect).

  • #GFHint: A complete game is when the pitcher never gets taken out of the game and pitches the entire time.
  • #GFHint: The difference between a perfect game vs a no-hitter: A perfect game is when NO batters make it on base for any reason. A no-hitter is when no batter gets a hit but can make it to the base due to other reasons (walk, error or getting hit by the ball)
  • #GFHint: Spider Tack is used on the ball to increase spin rate. It is so sticky that you have to use baby oil to get it off your hands. Spider Tack was specifically created for Strong Man competitions (in the Atlas stone event) and was used by wheelchair athletes before baseball found it.
  • #GFHint: An immaculate inning is 3 KOs in 9 pitches.

Golf

Explanations

  • #GFHint: World Golf Championships are more important than an average golf tournament on the PGA Tour but not as important as the Majors. There are 4 of these tournaments: WGC-HSBC Champions in China, WGC-Dell Match Play (Austin, TX), WGC-Mexico Championship obviously in Mexico and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational (Nashville, TN)
  • #GFHint: If your man says he’s going to hit a bucket of balls, he is going to the driving range.

  • #GFHint: The Open is a links course which means that the course is built on sand. This makes the ball run further than most other courses in the US. The weather conditions also makes links courses hard as the weather is usually windy and rainy.
  • #GFHint: How Korn Ferry finals work: the #26-75 on the KF Tour, along with the PGA Tour players who are in 125-200 in the FedEx Cup standings earn their spot in the 3 KF final tournaments. There are 3 tournaments and the top 25 after those 3 events, get their PGA Tour card.

  • #GFHint: Olympic Sports: You should know John Carlos from this picture where he and fellow Olympian Tommie Smith raised their fists on the medal stand at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in racial inequality protest. Those 2 athletes were then sent home and treated badly.
  • #GFHint: Swimming: Any event over 400m does not swim a semifinal and we had a couple last night.
  • #GFHint: Athletics: An Ironman is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run (a full marathon).
  • #GFHint: Athletics: The marathon majors are the Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and NYC.
  • #GFHint: Modern Pentathlon: Americans are often puzzled by the Modern Pentathlon event as it is not popular in this country, which might be why we don’t do well competing in it. But the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, created the event and it has been in every game since 1912. It is the test of the most all-around athlete and used to be competed over 5 days. It is now only in 1.

  • #GFHint: Tennis: Straight sets means the match ended in the fewest sets possible. AKA one player did not win a set.
  • #GFHint: Tennis: The Golden Slam is when you win all the Grand Slam events and the Olympic Gold Medal all in one calendar year. Since the Olympics happen only every 4 years, this is extremely rare. It has only been accomplished one time, by Steffi Graf in 1988.
