Athletics in Tokyo Specifics
- New in Tokyo 2020:
- The Mixed (coed) 4x400m relay
- Dates: July 30 – Aug 7 (M Marathon on Aug 8)
- Full Schedule for the games
Who to Know (on Team USA before Olympics):
- Allyson Felix
- She is in for her 5th and final (sad day) Olympic team. That 400m final at trials was not to be missed! Her medal count is 6 golds and 3 silvers, competing in the 4x100m relay, 200, 400m, 4x400m relay. She is a huge advocate for athletes who become moms after she gave birth to her daughter, Cammy in 2018.
- Result: She took bronze in the 400m in the best comeback I’ve ever seen! She will also be retiring at the end of the 2022 track season. She was also on the 4x400m relay team to win gold for the USA.
- Noah Lyles
- He is the reigning 200m World Champion. Noah was going to try the 100m/200m double but did not make the US team in the 100m. He is also super outgoing and personable.
- Result: He won bronze in the 200m after a hard year.
- Sydney McLaughlin
- She is now the WR holder after US trials. Sydney is considered one of the rising T&F stars and she keeps going back and forth with Dalilah Muhammad (also Team USA) for the win. except the 400m hurdles race to be one of the featured races of Tokyo!
- Result: She broke her own WR (that she and Dalilah had traded) and won gold in the 400m hurdles in an epic showdown with Dalilah. She was also on the 4x400m relay team to win gold for the USA.
- Sam Kendricks
- He has won back-to-back World Championships in the PV and it seems to be him and Duplantis trading off title wins.
- Result: He tested positive for COVID and did not compete in Tokyo.
- Other countries:
-
- Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price – Team JAM
- She has won more 100m titles than any other woman in history including the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing & 2012 London Games. However, she won bronze in Rio 2016. She has 6 Olympic medals to her name total. Without top American Richardson, the gold medal looks to be in her hands if she can take it.
- Results: She won silver in the 100m as part of the JAM sweep. She also was on the team that won gold in the 4x100m relay.
- Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price – Team JAM
-
- Mondo Duplantis – Team SWE
- He currently has the WR in the PV but has yet to win gold at the Olympics
- Results: He won gold clearing 6.02m.
- Mondo Duplantis – Team SWE
- Missing some people?
- Sha’Carri Richardson won the 100m in trails however tested positive for marijuana and is out of the Tokyo games.
- Christian Coleman, favorite for the World’s Fastest Man title has been banned due to missing too many tests.
- Christian Taylor, 2x TJ Olympic Champion, will not get to defend his title as he tore his Achilles within the last month.
- Shelby Houlihan, WR holder in 1500m, tested positive for steroids this week so she will no longer competing.
