Baseball/Softball – NCAA:

  • Softball season started Wednesday and Baseball season starts Friday!

Basketball-NBA:

  • This week’s games:
    • The Wizards won their 8th game of the season on Monday against the Hornets though so it kinda counts. CLT only had 12 wins on the season so this was a battle of the bottom of the league. The Trail Blazers and Suns both had 31 points after the 1Q and the game was back and forth. The Suns outpaced Portland in the 2Q but the Trail Blazers came back big in the 3Q. We ended regulation tied before TBs would win by 2. In this game, Devin Booker became the Sun’s franchise leading scorer.
    • Joel Embiid returned to the 76ers on Tuesday and it showed as they beat the Mavs by 2. The Cavs started off slow only scoring 15 in the 1Q and that was enough for the Celtics to win by 7 in the battle for the top of the Eastern conference. The Nets stole a win from Houston by 2. The Lakers won the battle of LA over the Clippers 122-97.

    • Fox made his debut for the Spurs and he and wemby made a great team both notching a double-double in their win over the Hawks by 1. Speaking of good duos, Porter and Jokic combined for 77 points for the Nuggets 144 point win over the Pelicans (119). The Wizards crushed the Nets 119-102 to get their 9th win of the season. Guess who was the highest scorer of the week, SGA from the Thunder (again) with another 50 point game. The Thunder killed the Suns 140-109.

    • The Celtics had that big win over the Cavs earlier in the week but then they lost to the Mavs by 7 on Thursday. Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves upset the Rockets (not having a great week) by 13. But Anthony also made his 1,000th career 3-pointer in this game. LeBron won the better of Steph and the Warriors with a 42-point game.
    • The Spurs were upset by the Hornets on Friday. That snapped CLT’s 6 game losing streak. The Suns needed OT to beat the Jazz to break a losing streak of their own but they have still lost 4 of their last 5 games.
    • Not a lot of upsets on Sat. The Rockets lost again! This time to the Mavs on Sat by 11. That was their 6th straight loss. Talk about a tumble as they have 32 win son the season (14 to 20 losses now). They would break that streak on Sunday beating the Raptors. Sunday there were only 3 game total. The other two were the Bucks beating the 76ers by 8 and the Pistons beating the Hornets by 10.

  • Trades on trades. Obviously last week we had some blockbuster trades. If you missed some, here is where you can find them. Jimmy Butler has found a home, the Warriors. Also PJ Tucker was traded 3xs in a week but he is now part of the Raptors. Both Luka and AD are out of their new teams on injury this week.

Basketball – NCAA:

  • NCAAM:
    • Monday started with a great matchup in the Big 12 between #8 Iowa St and #16 Kansas. The Jayhawks started out hot outscoring the Cyclones 35-19 in the 1H and they were able to hold on from there to win a lower scoring game.
    • Tuesday had more games in action but only 1 upset that wasn’t a ranked matchup. That was #9 Michigan St losing a close on to UCLA who has now beaten 3 ranked teams in a row (5 in the season). The Big East ranked matchup was a close game between #12 St. John’s and #11 Marquette. The game had 46 fouls called and the largest lead any team had was 8. That was St. John’s and they would win by 6. There was also a SEC matchup between #14 Kentucky and #25 Ole Miss. The Rebels came out scoring 54 in the 1H to take the lead. KT would return the favor in the 2H but Ole Miss didn’t roll over and won by 10.
    • #4 Tennessee came back in a big way in the 2H, scoring 57. They would only win by 4 over #15 Mizzou. Rutgers Freshman outstanding player Dylan Harper had 28 points in their upset over #23 Illinois winning by 11.
    • Thursday only had 1 ranked team in action #18 Maryland and they would lose a lose on to Ohio St by 3. #12 St. John’s won their 2nd ranked win of the week, this time beating defending champs #19 UConn by 6.

    • 20 of the top 25 teams were in action on Sat. #1 Auburn fell to #6 Florida who just played a better game and took the lead starting with 4:24 to go in the game. #2 Duke also went down on the same day to Clemson by 6. That was Clemson’s 5th straight win over a Top 5 team (longest active streak in D1). #10 Texas A&M led at halftime over #15 Mizzou by 9. But the Tigers would comeback in the 2H. We were tied in the final seconds of the game until the Aggies hit a 3-pointer with just 2 seconds left to take the W. #11 Marquette would lose their 2nd game of the week to Creighton on Sat by 10. #20 Arizona got an upset on #13 Texas Tech by winning both halves. #16 Kansas would lose to K St for the 3rd year in a row and the wildcats are only 6-6 in conference play. No upsets on sun.
  • Dick Vitale returned to the mic this week to call the upset of Duke by Clemson. He has been treated for a couple of different cancers over the last 2 years. Nice to see him back!

  •  NCAAW:
    • #1 UCLA got a new school record with their 22nd win over #8 Ohio St on Wed. Ohio St lost again on Sat, this time to #7 USC by 21.
    • #9 TCU and #10 Duke both went down to lower ranked teams this week.
    • #5 UConn got upset by #19 Tennessee in a big ranked matchup on Thursday.

Football:

  • Super Bowl VIX: Although the Chiefs dominated the headlines, the Eagles dominated on the field. This was one of the most lopsided SBs in my memory! LV’s score ended more lopsided but I think the score in this one looks better than it was. It was 24-0 at halftime for Phili. 2 INTs in the 1H help. Eagles rookie Carter DeJean got a pick-6 for the Eagles in the 2Q on his 22nd bday for 7 of those points. Then the Eagles got another pick in the final 2 min of the 1H to get the ball on the 14. 2 plays later, the Eagles scored again. The Cheifs were completely shutdown on offense. They only had 1 first down the entire 1H. The first time KC passed mid field, which led to the first Chiefs TDs, was in the final 34 seconds of 3Q. By that time the score was 34-0. Travis Kelce also didn’t get a pass until 3 min to go in that same Q. The Chiefs scored 2 TDs on their final 2 drives but man damage was done and the Eagles kept tacking on FGs. Final score of this one was 44-20 but again that doesn’t tell the story as 2 TDs were in garbage time (final 3 min). The only other Super Bowl win for the Eagles was SB LII (2017 season in 2018) over the Patriots.

  • But of course a lot of people watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. UWyoming paid for a SB ad! And Ram was the new hot star (Glen Powell aka Goldilocks) and Jeep went old school with the classic action star (Harrison Ford). I have linked some of the best.

  • Josh Allen won MVP for the first time over Lamar Jackson. Commanders QB Jayden Daniels on RoY.
  • The Jets have told QB Aaron Rodgers that they will be moving in a different direction so have we seen him pay his final NFL game?

Golf:

  • PGA: BEL Thomas Detry won his first PGA Tour tournament at the WM Open in PHX. Detry had a 3-shot lead almost the entire round on Sunday. His shot at 16 in the stadium hole was fantastic. In his 4 rounds, he averaged a 65 and only had 1 bogey per round for the entire tournament. Its no wonder he won. He birdied the final 4 holes to seal it and win by 7! Detry is the first Belgian to win on the PGA Tour. Michael Kim and Daniel Berger tied for 2nd. Rickie Fowler WD after illness hit him hard. Wyndham Clark took the lead after round 1 with no bogeys in his entire round. Justin Thomas finished his final round with a 65, an eagle on the 18th hole helps (he’s only the 6th to do that).

  • TGL: LA crushed Boston in their match this past week 6-2. This win put LA at the top of the league. The only points Boston got was both by Keagan Bradley. LA’s team is Colin Morikawa, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood.

  • LIV: Adrian Meronk won the opening tournament for the LIV tour in Riyadh by 2 strokes over Jon Rahm. He won in wire-to-wire fashion. But Rahm’s team Legion got the team win handily beating the next closest team by 11 strokes.

Olympic Sports:

  • Correction: 28 of US Figure Skating family was aboard the DC flight.
  • SUI skiers dominated the men’s WC circuit this week. Marco Odermott won gold in the Super-G Friday and then Franjo von Allmen won the downhill in AUT on Sunday. On the women’s side, USA Breezy Johnson took the downhill by 0.15 seconds, leading the race from start to finish. She was injured for the last Olympics. Vonn took 15th.
  • No surprise but GER dominated luge worlds, they won 5 of the 7 events this weekend. Emily Sweeny of the USA took 3rd in the women’s single.
  • What sounds like a small chance to the LJ is actually a big difference maker was tested out this weekend for the first time in competition in GER. The old take-off board (20”) would be replaced with a take-off zone (40”). The athlete’s jump would be measured from the athlete’s foot in the zone not a stationary board. This is controversial to say the least, the reigning world indoor champ (from GRE) said he would quit. In this meet, distances were measured in the new and old way. The winner under the new system would’ve been 3rd under the old.

  • Sticking with T&F, the Milrose games was competed in the Armory this weekend. The track was newly surfaced and you could tell as we saw 2 WRs go down! The 3K was one of the best races to watch of the evening (coming from a sprinter). Reigning OLY gold medalist in the 1500m, Cole Hocker went up to the 3K and he was confident in his training. He took the lead with 3 laps to go (600m) against 2x OLY bronze medalist from Paris, Grant Fisher in this event (Fisher’s events 5K and 10K). Fisher outkicked Hocker who is known for his kick and both would go under the old WR almost by a full second. In the mile, Yared Nuguse competed in the Wannamaker Mile and came in under WR time that was set 6 years ago by 0.38 seconds.

Some quick highlights:

  • MLB: Enrique Hernandez has joined the Dodgers for the 4th time in his career. He has been acquired twice by a trade and twice by being a free agent.
  • NHL: This week will look a little different as there are no NHL games but the 4 Nations Face-Off between USA, CAN, FIN and SWE. It has been since 2016 World Cup of Hockey since we have seen this kind of competition. NHL players have not been allowed to partake in the Olympics for almost a decade either.
  • NCAAW GYM: Fisk had the first HBCU perfect 10 in women’s gymnastics this past week on the uneven bars!
