Baseball – MLB:
- Some headlines:
- The Giants broke their 7 game win streak on Monday with a 2-0 loss ot the Reds. Cinci would win the next game too before SF would finally manage to win the last game in the series.
- The Yankees took 3 straight losses including against the Tigers to start the week on Tuesday. But they would get the 3rd game in the series. They would lose the series to the Giants but they would win game 2. Also on Tuesday, Pirates ROY from last year Paul Skenes had his career worst game of allowing 5 runs in their loss to the Cardinals 3-5. The Astros also needed 12 innings to get a one-run win over the Mariners.
- The Mets were on a 6 game win streak that started after a loss to the Marlins and ended with a 5-0 loss to the Marlins this week.
- The next day, the Pirates would bounce back to beat the Cardinals 2-1 in 13 innings – that’s a long game. Twins P Joe Ryan pitched 7 scoreless innings to beat the Royals 4-0. On the flip side of that, the Brewers bats got hot, putting up 17 runs over the Rockies.
-
- Jo Adell is now the 3rd player in Angels history to get 2 HRs in the same inning. He started off at bat in the 5th inning and then capped off an 8-run 5th inning bringing in 3-runs on his 2nd Mike Trout and Taylor Ward both got 2 HRs in this game as well. Needless to sday the Angels crushed the Rays 11-1.
- The White Sox finally stopped their 8 game losing streak against the Red Sox on Fri and they would beat them twice with a combined score of 14-3. Despite winning game 1, CHI is now 4-11. Also on Fri, the Giants beat the Yankees 9-1 in just 6 innings after rain delayed the game and ultimately the game only made it through 6 innings.
-
- The Braves got a 2-run HR in the 9th to take the lead and win by 1 over the Rays. Both teams had >10 hits but the score was 5-4. The Dbacks put up all 5 runs needed to win their game over the Brewers, who were up 4-0 before the bottom of the 9th. The Cubs absolutely annihilated the Dodgers 16-0 which was their first loss in LA of the season. That was also the biggest shutout for the Dodgers in franchise history.
Basketball-NBA:
- This week’s games:
- Monday only had 2 games in action. The Kings dominated the Pistons with their top player putting up 43 points. The Heat beat the 76ers.
- Magics’ Banchero helped his team beat the Hawks with his 20th straight game over 20 points. he put up 33. The Timberwolves were up by 24 points in the 4Q and blew it! They would only manage 13 points while the Bucks scored 40 to take the game. The Celtics and Knicks went into OT in what was a post season preview thriller. Their leading scorers even scored the same amount of points. But BOS Porzingis had a couple of clutch 3s in OT to give them the W.
- The Celtics mustve been tired from that OT game because they would drop their game the next day to the Magic by 20 only scoring 76 in the entire game! The Jazz for their 17th win with an OT win over the Trail Blazers with a solidifying 10-0 in OT. That would snap their 9 game losing streak. The Spurs lost to the Warriors on Tues but would come back and win on Wed by just 3 points. The Clippers upset the Rockets outscoring Houston in every Q.
-
- There were only 5 games on Thurs. The Pistons upset the Knicks by 9 who are not having a great week considering the team has won 50 games. The Cavs also dropped another game in a close one to the Pacers. The Timberwolves scored 52 points in the 3Q alone to beat the Grizzlies and Edwards got 44 of them by himself (full game).
- The Pacers mightve gotten the better of the Cavs but they would drop a game to the Magic on Friday by 14. The Cavs bounced back nicely to beat the struggling Knicks on a close one. The Lakers continued their momentum from their Dallas game to beat another texas team – this time the Rockets by 31! Luka put up 39.
-
- No games on Sat. Sundays games were all comeplte by 6pm CT for the final day of the regular season. The Magic lost to the Hawks to end up exactly at .500. The Rockets would drop another game on Sunday although to a better team, the Nuggets. The Wizards got their 18th win against the Heat in buzzer-beater fashion. The Trail Blazers would crush the Lakers but LA didn’t play anyone and their score of 81 showed it! The Pacers only scored 18 in the 2Q against the Cavs and still managed to come back to get into OT. It would take 2OT before the Pacers would get this upset done but they manage it! Also going into OT was the Pistons and Bucks. The Bucks started off hot, putting up 43 in the 1st but the Pistons would win the other Qs. Milwaukee would win in OT though. The Clippers got their 50th win in OT against the Warriors. That would clinch the final playoff spot! The Warriors are now in the play-in.
- But the big news on Wed was the homecoming of Luka to Dallas for the first time since he was traded to the Lakers. Dallas played a tribute to him and even had shirts that said ‘thanks for everything’ in his native slovenian. Luka was moved to tears pre-game but then he went to work when the clock started. He would drop 45 points on his old team who cheered for him when he scored his first point – prob not the 45th!
- Jaylen Wells was also carted off from a game this week on a stretcher. He suffered a broken wrist but is ok. Looked like it might’ve been worse so we are very thankful.
- In the West, the Suns, Trail Blazers, Spurs, Pelicans and Jazz were eliminated. Last in was the Mavs for a play-in spot. In the final ‘normal’ playoff spot was the Timberwolves. The Lakers won their division as did the Rockets and Thunder. At the top of the East is the Cavs with 64. The Celtics clinched their division and last in is the Pistons. Last play-in spot is the Heat. The Raptors, Nets, 76ers, Hornets and Wizards were eliminated form the East.
Basketball – NCAA:
- Wrapping up the final which was last week! It was a crazy game. UH started off well, leading by 3 at half. But Florida is used to coming back. From 6 against Maryland, 10 against TT and 9 points against Auburn in the last 3 rounds of the tournament and this time they trailed UH by 12 at one point in the 2H. However we were tied 6 different times in the final 8 min of agame play. Florida’s largest lead was 2 points. That is the smallest point differential since 2010. Florida only had 6 3-pointers in this game. They only had the lead for 17 seconds total.
- Walter Clayton Jr, the best player on Florida’s roster and #3 in the country, had 0 points in the entire 1H and only 11 points in the game. If you had just told me that stat, I would’ve for sure thought UH won. But the Florida defense was the ones who really stepped up. UH scored 0 points from the paint in the final 2:28 of the game. How bad was their shooting? They went from 1st shooting average to 3rd just because of the final. Their final 4 possessions of the game all ended in turnovers whereas they had only had 5 all game. Florida wins after UH ges to shoot the ball but bounces the ball an extra time and therefore has to give it up. The Cougs dont even get a final shot off before the clock runs out. FL 65-63.
- Florida’s ending resume was impressive to say the least: They beat 4 top 10 KenPom teams (Maryland 10, TT 9th, Auburn 4th and UH 2nd).
Golf:
- The week started with kids stealing the show. Brooks Koepka got a hole in one during a practice round with his son on the course. But no one stole the show more than Poppy McIlroy who putted on one of the greens and barely tapped the ball and it went in the hole!
- The Masters: Rory led the final round by 2 strokes over Bryson DeChambeau and just had to play normal and he would have this title barring something crazy. But he started with a double bogey. Then he would get 4 birdies before a terrible stretch at Amen corner (11-14). In those 4 holes, Rory went +4. However he still had the lead going into the final hole and looked to have a par in the bag even after hitting the green side bunker but a beautiful chip, set him up for a not-gimme 6ft par putt. But it barely misses and so we head to a playoff. Justin Rose was 6 strokes back going into the final round and had one of the best rounds of the day with a -6 to put him at -11 for the tournament. For the 18th time, the Masters went into a playoff. Both men hit their tee shots onto the fairway and played well. Justin Rose had the further birdie putt (19 ft) but he missed which opened the door for Rory. He only had a 4 ft birdie putt and he nailed it. Justin Rose also lost in a playoff back in 2017 too to Sergio Garcia. Rory has played in the Masters 17 times and of those, he has been in the top 10 8xs. This is his 29th win on the PGA Tour. Rory had won his last major back in 2014 when he won both the PGA Championship and Open. He also won the US open back in 2011. This completes the Career Grand Slam for Rory. He is just the 6th golfer to get the slam.
Hockey:
- NHL: It is the final week of the regular season. In the East, the Capitals and Maple Leafs sit at the top and Capitals have the most points (that’s how the NHL works). The Lightning, Hurricanes, Panthers, Senators and Devils are in! The Canadiens and Blue Jackets are still on the fence. The Jets have the best regular season record and top the West. The Golden Knights, Stars, Kings, Avalanche and Oilers are officially in. The Wild, Blues and Flames are still fighting for one of those last spots.
- Eliminated: (E) Islanders, Red Wings, Rangers, Penguins, Sabres, Flyers and Bruins. (W) Canucks, Utah, Ducks, Kraken, Predators, Blackhawks and Sharks.
- W Olympic Hockey: The USA so far remains perfect in the women’s hockey world championships. That is after their meet up with rival Canada who they beat 2-1. They destroyed FIN and shutout CZE. This is all in group play still so tbd when we get into the tournament.
- NCAA M Hockey: Western Michigan made its Frozen Four debut and beat the defending champs, BU for their first national title. Score of that game was 6-2. Congrats to the Broncos!
Olympic Sports:
- An update on the LA 2028 Olympic Games as they had their IOC board meeting essentially last week. There will be more women in the LA 2028 Olympics than men – an Olympic first. Specifically helping is women’s soccer. In LA, there will be 16 teams in the women’s tournament and 12 in the men’s. That is flipped from Paris. Water polo and boxing have also increase their women team and weight classes to make them equal with the men. 3×3 bball will add teams for both genders (up to 12) as the sport grows in popularity. There will also be new mixed events: Archery with a mixed team compound bow event, Artistic gymnastics, Athletics: 4x100m mixed relay, Coastal rowing beach sprint (double sculls), Golf and Table Tennis. Gymnastics format is still TBD. FINALLY! In Swimming, we see the addition of the 50m sprints in the other strokes (back, breast and fly) – the freestyle had been an event for a long time while the others were competed at Worlds but not in the Olympics. This totals 10,500 athletes in 31 sports.
- WRs go down:
- A new WR has gone down. GER Lukas Martens broke the 400m free WR which was set back in 2009 using the super suits by another GER.
- LIT Mykolas Alekna broke his own WR in the discuss and is the first person to ever throw over 75m. His throw of 75.56m is the new mark to beat and was set in a tiny meet in Oklahoma – the same venue he broke the WR in last year. Good thing he broke the WR because another competitor broke his old mark as well.
Some quick highlights:
- NCAA Baseball and Softball:
- The Tennessee Lady Vols are taking down every #1 team. Last week they beat the #1 Oklahoma Sooners in their series (they dropped 1 game) and this weekend they took on the #1 Texas Longhorns and also only dropped 1 game of the 3-game series. They are not ranked #1 as they still have 8 losses.
- Texas A&M was down 12-2 in the bottom of the 6th inning and had a massive comeback against the Gamecocks. The Aggies would score not only the 10 they needed but add on 3 more for good measure. They would win that game 15-12.
- WNBA: The WNBA draft is tonight. UConn’s Paige Bueckers is expected to be the #1 draft pick to the Dallas Wings tonight.
- NCAAF: Tennessee starting QB Nico Iamaleava will now transfer from the Vols! He has been going through NIL negotiations and ultimately did not show up for practice on Friday and the announcement came at the Spring game on Saturday. Supposedly Nico was making $2.4MM on a contract that was $8MM when he signed it. Rumors have it that he wanted $4MM per year and didn’t get it and thus is entering the transfer portal.
- NCAAF: Former LSU WR Kyren Lacy was found dead in Houston by his own hand. He was going through a trial after he caused a crash that killed a 78-year-old man and fled the scene.
- F1: McLarens’s Piastri beat George Russell and his teammate Norris by 15 seconds in the Bahrain GP from pole position.
