Podcast episode will drop tomorrow night instead – Hoppy Easter!
Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s headlines:
- Pirates P Paul Skenes bounced back from last week’s worst loss of his career to win this week. He and C Henry Davis combined for the first P/C battery comprised of players that were #1 draft picks. Tha Piarates won that game 10-3. Rays Kameron Misner got 2 HRs in their 16-1 domination over the Red Sox.
- The Brewers lost their 3rd straight game on Monday to the Tigers but would snap that streak the next game and win the next 3 in a row. It started with a 5-0 shutout of the Tigers on Tues. The Padres dropped their first home game of the season in a close one 1-2 to the Cubs which they needed extra innings to get it done.
- Red Sox pitchers retired 13 of the 14 final batters to win 1-0 over the Rays on Wed. Aaron Judge got the winning HR in the Yankees 1-run win over the Royals. That HR ended his 10 game drought.
- The Mariners and Reds went into an extra inning but then Seattle went off scoring 4 runs to win 11-7. The DBacks won their 5th game in a row including a sweep of the Marlins. They would break that to the Cubs in a hgh scoring game 13-11.
-
- The Dbacks and Cubs combined for 16 runs in the 8th inning which is the most runs scored in a single inning in Wrigley Field since 1914. The Cubs would win this offensive battle 13-11. The Blue Jays won their 3rd game in a row with a W over the Mariners. That win streak would end the next day. Mets Francisco Lindor hits a HR in the 9th to beat the Cardinals by 1.
- Over the weekend, the Phillies won by 1 in a 11-10 game over the Marlins. The Nationals would win 12-11 over the Rockies to hand CO their 8th straight loss. The Rockies would finally snap that streak the next night when they would beat the Nationals 3-1. The Mariners/Blue Jays needed 12 innings to get a final result but then the Mariners got a grand slam – every little kids dream. The Reds had themselves a day, putting up 24 runs on the Orioles who only managed 2.
Basketball-NBA:
- Play in games: The Hawks only scored 17 points in the 1Q compared to 32 by the Magic. That pretty much told that story. The Magic owned this game 120-95. Compared to the Grizzlies/warriors game. That one was close. The Warriors won the 1H by 11 points. but the Grizzlies came back but would fall 5 points short. The Heat owned the first half of their game over the Bulls as well by 24. The Bulls could not make up that difference. The Mavs crushed the Kings in the fianl play in game of the first round 120-106. In the final day of play-ins. The Heat and Hawks fought to OT for one of the final spots. They were tied in 2 of the 4 Qs. But Miami owned OT to secure their spot in the tournament. The Grizzlies beat the Mavs in 3 of the 4 Qs of their game despite AD scoring 40 points for Dallas.
- Round 1 day 1: East: The Pacers crushed the Bucks and it started in the 1H. Indiana only let the Bucks outscore them in the 3Q but only by 5. The Knicks came back in the 4Q with a 21-0 run to come back to win over the Pistons by 11. In the West, the Timberwolves desroyed the Lakers. Luka scored 37 points but man it didn’t matter. Minnesota set their franchise record 21 3-pointers to win 117-95. The Clippers/Nuggets went into OT and it was close the whole way. The Clippers had a low 2Q but otherwise came to play. Going into OT, both teams put up a good fight. But Russell Westbrooks’ defensive skills came in handy to win them the game by 2.
- Round 1 day 2: The Thunder crushed the Grizzlies by 51. Memphis had 2Qs with less than 20 points which obvioulsy killed them in this one. OKC gets game 1 easily. The other game in the West was closer but that’s not a hig bar. The Warriors looked to be in a tough spot when they only scored 18 in 1Q but then Houston would top that with only 13 points in the enditre 2Q. After all that, the Warriors would win by 10 thanks to Steph Curry’s 31 points. In the East, the Magic didn’t play well at all. Only 1 Q was over 20 points. That let the Celtics win 103-86. Donovan Mitchell led the Heat with a 30 point game and led the Cavs to beat the Beat 121-100.
- Luka’s Lakers jersey is the new #1 in jersey sales. This is the first time in a decade that the #1 has not been LeBron and Steph.
Football:
- Starting QB for Tennessee Nico Iamaleava is set to now transfer to UCLA. This is a big deal as reportedly Nico went to TN and asked for more money (currently making $2.5MM/yr), Tennessee refused and so now have to go find a new QB.
- Approved changes to CFP.
- Fake injuries. If medical personnel enter field of play after ball spotted for next play, that team is charged a TO. If they are out of TOs then they get a 5 yard penalty.
- The Dan Lanning rule: If defense commit 12 field penalty in final 2m of half then offensive team can start clock at the beginning of the play.
- Replay terminology. Upheld or overturned. No more stands or confirmed.
- If any player on return team makes a T with his arms it’s considered calling for a fair catch.
- Helmet comms now allowed at FCs level.
- Lee Corso annoucned that he will be retiring from College Gameday after 1 more show (Aug 31st). He is 90 and has been apart of every show since it started in 1987. He is mainly known for his head gear picks to end the show (started in 1996). He is 286-144 through 430 selections. His most picked mascot was Ohio St at 45xs. He played FSU then he was a HC at Louisville, Indiana and Northern Ill. He will be missed on the show!
Golf:
- In the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters, they give out a plaid jacket. Not nearly as noteworthy but it was a great win for Justin Thomas who snaps a 3 year drought with this win. He dominated and led almost every round, helps when you start with a 10-under 61. The field came back to him though and Andrew Novak played well enough to get himself tied for the top spot. JT had a 20 foot putt for birdie and the outrigt win. He would miss and end up in playoff with Novak. Novak would miss a birdie putt from 35 feet and JT wouldn’t miss again. He would win his first tournament as a father. He hadnt won since 2022, missed the FedEx Cup playoffs in 2023 and was left off the President’s Cup team last year.
Olympic Sports:
- It was NCAAs for gymanstics this weekend:
- On the women’s side, Oklahoma won its 7th national championship since 2014. This ties them with UCLA as the 3rd most of any team. The Sooners were the only ones with a score over 198. The Sooners tied the first rotation and then had the lead from there. Vault was the most critical as it had been the harshest judged event of the weekend. The Sooners only counted 2 scores in the 9.8s whereas others had lower. Fittingly Oklahoma ended with Jordan Bowers on the Bars to end her collegiate career. These ladies choked last year in the semifinal in the vault so it was a redemption story. #1 and defending champ, LSU and #3 Florida failed to make it out of semifinals. UCLA got 2nd by .4 behind OU, Mizzou got 3rd (after making their first final ever) and Utah.
- On the men’s side, the Michigan men overcame the #1 Sooners after Oklahoma had an athlete fall on the pommel. Michigan trailed Oklahoma going into the fianl rotoation by .537 but would end up edging out the Stanford Cardinal by .163 thanks to Olympian Paul Juda with a 13.966. This was the first natty for the Wolverines since 2014.
- Alyssa Liu won gold at the World Team Trophy (WTT). USA has medaled ay every WTT event since it started in 2009. Victories in the men’s competition and dance gave Team USA a 15 point lead going into the final day of compeition. This event features the top 6 teams in the sport (JPN who got 2nd, ITA, FRA, CAN and Georgia). Liu landed 7 triples to get a new high score for her of 150.97.
Some quick highlights:
- WNBA: Paige Bueckers did indeed go #1 in the WNBA draft to the Dallas Wings.
- NFL: Aaron Rodgers made quite a stir on the Pat McAfee show when he said that retirement is still on the table. Not sure that was smart as that might deter other teams from looking at him. He still does not have a landing spot but is rumored to be in contention for a couple (Vikings, giants etc) after the Jets let him go a month ago.
- Hockey: US topped CAN 4-3 in OT to win the world hockey title. That is the 11th title for the Americans.
