Baseball:
- It was opening week and we only have 3 undefeated teams left and all in the American. The Rays, Twins and Rangers have not lost. On the flip side the Tigers and Phillies have not won. Reigning champs Houston Astros started 2-2.
- Angels 3B Anthony Rendon has been suspend for five games after an altercation with a fan. That altercation was that Rendon grabbed the fan by the shirt when he was exiting the 1B dugout. Allegedly the fan called him a B. This was after the Angels 2-1 loss to Oakland on opening night. Couldn’t tell who took a swipe at the other by the writing. Rendon was also fined but the amount as not been disclosed.
Basketball – NBA:
- The recently eliminated Trail Blazers bounced back from that this week to upset the Timberwolves. That 19.5 point deficit was the largest upset in 30 years. The Blazers were missing 4 of 5 starters and had lost 11 of the last 12 games going into that game last night.
- The Bucks have taken the Atlantic and the Knicks and Raptors (play-in) have also qualified for playoffs in the East. We only added the Kings in the West. The Kings had the longest playoff drought in the NBA since 2005/2006 season.
- Eliminated: (W) Trail Blazers*, Spurs and Rockets / (E) Wizards*, Pacers*, Hornets and Pistons
- We have a new class being entered into the Hall of Fame including San Antonio HC Gregg Popovitch, Dwayne Wade and Dirk Nowitzki.
Basketball-NCAA:
- Final Four and final is set for tonight. It was a tale of two games.
- The first one was not close with #4 UConn leading by 13 at half and they never gave up that lead over #5 Miami. Miami’s top scorer only had 11 points and that pretty much sums up how that game went for the Canes. UConn wins 72-59.
- The 2nd one was very close and had an exciting comeback and literally had a buzzer beater for the W. #9 FAU came out hot in the 1H scoring 40 points but #5 San Diego St surged back in the 2H. All of it came down to the final seconds when SDSt was down by 1 but had the ball in the paint when Lamont Butler threw it up and sinks it as the final buzzer rang.
- The women’s tournament ended last night with the LSU Tiger claiming their first national championship in school history. They beat Iowa even with MVP Caitlin Clark 102-85. Only 2.9% of brackets filled to had LSU winning the whole thing.
Football – NCAA:
- Kansas has hired Sean Snyder to be a special assistant to the HC. You might recognize that last name from the great HC of Kansas ST Bill Snyder (also the stadium is named after him). Snyder has done time at Kansas St (with his dad), Illinois and USC.
Golf:
- Corey Conners wins the Valero Texas Open this weekend in San Antonio and secures the last spot in the masters. Conners led at different points in the weekend but went bogey free in the final round. He also won the Valero in 2019. Although this was his second Valero Texas open title it is also only his second PGA title.
- It has been a while since we have seen Brooks Koepka on top of the leaderboard but he took home the title in Orlando this weekend to become the first 2x winner on LIV. Brooks might be a nice pick for the Masters this week. We all know what Brooks is like on a major week.
Olympic Sports:
- Let’s do some throwback stories…
- Remember Oscar Pistorius, who was the hero of Paralympics by competing in the Olympics on his artificial legs to then murder his gf on Valentines day after she was in the bathroom and he shot her through the door? Well he was denied parole this week 7 years after he was convicted. He is able to apply for another try in Aug 2024. He has been serving a 13 year sentence.
- USA Lashina Demus originally got Silver the London Olympics in the 400h. Demus finished 0.07 seconds behind RUS Natalya Antyukh however Natalya was found to be one of the RUS athletes doping. She now is an Olympic Champion at the age of 40.
- Summer McIntosh has broken 2 WRs in 5 days. It started Tuesday the opening night of the trials in Canada, breaking the 400m Free WR by .36 which was set earlier this year by AUS Ariane Titmus. She then broke the 400m IM record on Saturday by .49 seconds over HUN Katinka Hosszu from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. She also won the 200m Fly (but not in WR time). This meet was to qualify for Worlds in July.
Soccer:
- ARG Lionel Messi became the 3rd player in history to score 100 goals internationally. The only others to reach that feat is Cristiano Ronaldo and IRN Ali Daei. This also added Curacao to the list of nations he has scored against and he managed a hattrick in the game.
