Baseball:

  • Angels Ried Detmers accomplished an ‘immaculate inning’ against the Rangers on Sunday. He is the first pitcher in 7 years to record an immaculate inning and a no-hitter in the same season. The Astros had 2 immaculate innings in the same game against the Texas team to make a record 3 against in one season. The Rangers got the last laugh on Sunday though, winning 5-2 against the Angels.
    • #GFHint: An immaculate inning is 3 KOs in 9 pitches.
  • The Padres might finally be able to close out a game with the best closer in the league acquired from the Brewers on Monday. Josh Hader made the move in a trade for 4 players including a closer.
  • Debuts after injury:
    • Mariners RHP Luis Castillo will be back for the game vs the Yankees on Wednesday. Castillo wasn’t injured but he was just acquired from the Reds on Friday. The Mariners are hoping to make the playoffs (for a wild card spot) for the first time since 2001.
    • Mets Jacob deGrom is set to return for the Mets against the Nationals on Tuesday. He has been out with multiple injuries (forearm tightness, sprained elbow, stress reaction in scapula). He has not pitched since 7/7/21.

Basketball:

  • Bill Russell, Celtics 11x NBA Hall of Famer, dies at 88. At University of SF, Russell won 2 straight NCAA championships and 55 consecutive wins. He spent 13 years with the Celtics and went to the championship final 12xs, winning 11xs. The last 2 titles were while he was serving as player and coach. He was the first Black coach in the NBA. Before Michael Jordon, Bill Russell was considered the best NBA player of all time. He is tied for the most titles all time (across all sports). He was a team player and social justice leader.
  • Steph Curry should stick to basketball. He threw out the first pitch at the A’s game vs the Astros. However it went a little off and he has been trolled since.

Football:

  • Deshaun Watson has been suspended for 6 games (remember he is the Browns QB now) in a result of the ‘violating the league’s personal conduct policy.’ That means he will be able to play the weekend of Oct 23rd for their game vs the Ravens. 25 women filed civil lawsuits against the former-Texans QB saying he sexually assaulted or at least conducted inappropriate activities during massages.
  • The Dallas Cowboys is the most valuable sports franchise, valued at $7.64Bn. The Dallas team is only $630MM over 2nd place occupied by the Yankees. 16 NFL teams along with 4 NBA and 3 MLB teams were valued over $4Bn. The least? Bengals at $2.84Bn.
  • Deebo Samuel has signed a deal with the 49ers for $73MM for 3 years with $58MM guaranteed.

Golf:

  • Tony Finau won again on the PGA Tour. No this isn’t just left on the weekly update from a previous week, he seriously won again! He is the first player to win consecutive tournaments in 3 years. Finau won with a score of -26, a tournament record to win by 5 shots. This was his 4th PGA Tour title and 3rd victory in 11 months. Contributing to the victory, Finau hit 66 of 72 greens in regulation! That’s hard to beat. This victory moves Finau into 7th in the FedEx Cup with the final event of the regular season this week.

  • Henrik Stenson, after joining LIV last week, won the Bedminster event and thus took home $4.3MM. Luke Donald will take over as Ryder Cup captain for Team Europe.

  • Someone who is not going to LIV, Charles Barkley. It was rumored that he was approached after Feherty went over to the new tour. However he said he will retire at Turner/TNT. Bubba Watson is joining the LIV.

  • The LIV Tour is not going away. They jut announced they will be back next year and there are some changes. There will be 14 events, a major step up from the 8 they had this year. The teams will also be franchised and set for the season will be competing for $405MM in purses (up from $255MM this year). Where the 14 events will be has not been announced yet but the LIV has come out to say that they ‘wouldn’t conflict with the 4 majors, major team events or heritage tournaments’. The LIV will also add tournaments to it’s LIV Golf International Series which is its partnership with the Asian Tour, meant to give amateurs a place to develop.
  • In retaliation, the PGA Tour announced it’s 2022/23 regular season schedule with 44 tournaments and a record $428MM in prize money. This will be the last wrap around season. Another change is that the top 70 players will qualify for the first FedEx Cup playoff event, followed by 50 then 30.

Olympic Sports:

  • The Commonwealth Games is in full swing. These are like the Olympics, held once every 4 years, but only involve the countries that were overseen by England, 72 countries as of this year’s games. The games include 23 sports including 7 parasports. The Games run through Monday Aug 8th.
    • Emma McKeon has won her 11th gold – the most ever of any athlete at the CWG. She won the 50m Free to set the record.
    • 15 year old CAN Summer McIntosh won the 400m IM. She is the 1st CAN swimmer to win 2 golds at a single CWGs.
    • In juxtaposition to that, GBR Adam Peaty was upset in the 100m Breast. Now this was his first final since Tokyo, missing Worlds due to a broken foot. ENG James Wilby won the gold.

  • The women’s Tour de France is over and NED Annemiek van Vleuten won in the final stage by 30 seconds. She came up from 8th to take the yellow jersey on Saturday’s 2nd to last stage.
