Baseball:

  • Derek Jeter and ARod will be back together again this time on TV. Fox Sports announced that Jeter will be joining their studio coverage this season. The two were teammates for the Yankees for 10 seasons.

Basketball – NBA:

  • LeBron passes Kareem Abdul Jabaar as the All-Time leading scorer in NBA history. Kareem had the record from 1984 to 2023 with 38387 points. Before him it was Wilt Chamberlin from 1966 to 1984. LeBron also has mentioned that he is not retiring until he can play a year with his son in the NBA. As of tonight, LeBron has 38,390 points.
  • Russell Westbrook was traded from the Lakers to the Jazz in a 3-team 8-player trade deal. The deal had the Lakers getting D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt. The Timberwolves get Mike Conley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker and 3 2nd round picks (in 2024, 2025 and 2026). The Jazz get Russell Westbrook, Juan Toscano-Anderson and Damian Jones and a 2027 1st round draft pick.

Basketball-NCAA:

  • NCAAM Losses in Top 25 this week: We started off the week with a Big 12 ranked match up between #9 Kansas and #5 Texas. The Jayhawks are a basketball blue blood for a reason and they get the W here. Tuesday was a blockbuster day of 4 ranked games! In the ACC, #8 UVA beat #22 NC St after the wolfpack only scored 20 points in 1H. In the Big East, #21 UConn upset #10 Marquette 87-72. In the Big 12, #12 Kansas St destroyed #17 TCU by 21 points. In the Big 10, #16 Indiana beat #24 Rutgers by 6 thanks to F Jackson-Davis hitting 2,000 career points. Busy week so far! 12-12 Vanderbilt sunk a buzzer beater 3-pointer to knock off #6 Tennessee to win by 1. Needless to say, the fans stormed the court. Bad week for the Cyclones as #11 Iowa St lost to West Virginia by 5 and on Saturday to Oklahoma State. Loyola Marymount took #15 Saint Mary’s into OT and ended up beating them by 4. Butler is not having the year they hoped for being 13-13 and 5-10 in the Big East but they did beat #13 Xavier by 3 on Friday, which gave their fans something to cheer for. Saturday was another big day. Stanford, who has a losing record beat #4 Arizona by 9. #6 Tennessee lost again this week, this time to Mizzou (also by 1). #12 Kansas St lost to Texas Tech who is 2-10 in the conference. #17 TCU also lost again this time to #14 Baylor (so not really an upset but still). #20 Providence played a close one but ultimately lost to St. Johns by 5. #21 UConn may have gotten a big win earlier in the week but they lost to #23 Creighton on Saturday 56-53. #24 Rutgers also wont be ranked after losing twice on Saturday it was to Illinois by 9. The only ranked team to play on Sunday was #1 Purdue who lost to Northwestern after a storm back by the Wildcats.

Football – NCAA:

  • Oklahoma and Texas will leave the Big 12 next year (1 year early) for the SEC. The news broke this week and the two schools will pay the Big 12 $100MM to do it. Not before adding UCF, BYU, Houston and Cincinnati to the schedule this year though!
  • And speaking of Oklahoma, the Sooners had the most players of any school playing in the Super Bowl last night with 6 (4 Chiefs and 2 Eagles).

Football – NFL:

  • “Alexa que up ‘We are the Champions’ for Chiefs.” Super Bowl LVII was yesterday. It had everything. This was the first time 2 starting QBs were black. We even had a Kelce brother on each side of the matchup (although both played offense). In the 1H, we had a doinked FG, a defensive scoop and score by the Chiefs and some drama with Mahomes limping off the field. The Eagles led 24-14 at half. Rihanna crushed the halftime show and dropped the bomb that she is pregnant again (she had her first baby in May of last year). But the Chiefs came out from half all fired up and scored on every offensive possession in the half. This led to their comeback putting up 3 straight TDs compared to Phili’s FG. The Eagles scored a TD and two-point conversion to tie it back up at 35-35 with 5 minutes left to go in the game. Couldn’t ask for a better game. But Mahomes earned his MVP award in the final drive taking the KC team from their own 25 to the Phili 9 for the game winning FG with 8 seconds left. The Holding call against Bradberry on 3rd&8 didn’t hurt either. The Eagles could do anything in 8 seconds and SB LVII is KC’s. And as always the commercials were on point (my favs: Boston Lager, Uber One, Bud Lite. Honorable mentions: GM, Pop Corners, Dunkin, Pepsi, Blue Moon and Michelob Ultra).

Golf:

  • Scottie Scheffler won the biggest party on grass this weekend at the WM Phoenix Open and reclaimed his spot as World #1. This was his back-to-back victory here at WM and his 5th PGA Tour title overall. Nick Taylor put up a good fight and was tied before Scottie eagled the 13th. Ultimately, Scottie won by 2. Jon Rahm was in 2nd place going into the final round but finished with a 68 to take 3rd.

Olympic Sports:

  • Russia has been stripped of its hosting duties for the 2025 Swimming World Championship. Singapore has been awarded the new host. Kazan was the original location chosen in 2019 and was the 2015 host city. Worlds will be for swimming, diving, artistic swimming and water polo. This year’s is in Japan.
