Baseball/Softball – NCAA:

  • This last week was the debut of baseball but softball is making the news. #1 Oklahoma fell to unranked Baylor. What was supposed to be the untouchable dynasty fell just 9 games into the season. #2 UCLA has now taken over the top spot and Baylor is now #22.

Basketball – NBA:

  • The All Star game was Sunday night and it was first team to 182 wins. Team Giannis took home the victory although Giannis himself only scored 2 points due to injury. It was a close game 184-175 but the 3-point percentages that made the difference with Giannis’ team shooting ~44% compared to LeBron’s 28%. Tatum also had himself a day scoring 55 points, Mitchell scored 40 for Giannis’ team. In contrast the highest scoring player on LeBron’s team came from the bench (Brown with 35).
  • Giannis is still injured from the Bulls game on the 16th but no serious damage appeared in the x-ray. We are looking at a ligament sprain.

Basketball-NCAA:

  • NCAAM Losses in Top 25 this week: We started off hot with #6 Texas losing to Texas Tech who is 3-10 in the Big 12 on Monday. Then on Tuesday, Oklahoma delivered the next upset in the Big 12 beating #12 K State by 14. The Sooners are either hot or not. Although the Sooners did take their rivals #6 Texas into OT on Saturday before losing by 2. #18 Creighton vs #24 Providence promised to be a big showdown of the 3rd and 4th highest ranked teams in the Big East and the game lived up to the hype. In regulation the teams switched at half with one scoring 36 then 37 and the other 37 then 36. We needed 2OT for a winner here before #24 Providence took it! Syracuse also upset #23 NC St. #10 Tennessee played #1 Alabama and they were tied up at 29 a piece at half but the Vols came back to take down #1. The top teams in the Big East then faced off #16 Xavier vs #11 Marquette and although we didn’t need 2OT, Marquette won by 1 in regulation. Northwestern delivered another upset this week, this time taking down #14 Indiana after the Hoosiers came back from 21 down to tie the game with 30 seconds left. #19 Iowa St put up 35 in each half to beat #22 TCU. #3 Purdue got destroyed by Maryland and fans stormed the court. #25 FAU took its 2nd loss in CUSA and 3rd of the season to Middle Tennessee. #9 Baylor put up a good fight and impressive first half but ultimately fell to the #5 Jayhawks by 16. #10 Tennessee had a great game against Bama earlier in the week but fell to Kentucky on Saturday by 12. #12 K St had a nice bounce back from their loss this week to then beat #19 Iowa St.

  • Also not a loss in the Top 25 but still noteworthy, #13 Gonzaga beat Loyola Marymount 108 vs 65. Gonzaga would’ve won the game with their first half score alone (68). #1 Alabama put up the same score with a pair of 54s against Georgia who they beat by 49.

Golf:

  • Well Scottie Scheffler’s reign at the top spot lasted 1 week after Jon Rahm won at Riveria this weekend at the Genesis Invitational. An invitational has a limited number of invites that go out and usually attracts top talent. This year’s brought in 22 of the 25 top golfers in the world. This is Jon Rahm’s 10th PGA Title and 3rd this season. Also the other headline was Tiger made the cut for the weekend before carding a 5 over final round.

  • #ICYMI Full Swing is out on Netflix and it is juicy!!

Motorsports:

  • Rickey Stenhouse Jr won the Daytona 500 in 2OT which means it went 212 laps (12 laps further than the normal) and 530 miles. This team was also the first to win co-owned by a black man and a woman.

Olympic Sports:

  • Thursday Mikaela Shiffrin brought home the gold in the Giant Slalom at Worlds. This does not count towards her World Cup total which she is only 1 win away from Ingemar Stenmark’s mark of 86 titles.

  • Greece now has a medal in skiing at worlds! AJ Ginnis took 2nd in the slalom to earn the first Greek medal in Alpine Skiing.
  • It was US Indoor Championships with T&F this weekend and a couple American records fell. Aleia Hobbs broke the American record in the 60m running a 6.94. Anna Hall broke the American record in the Pentathlon with 5004 points. She was just 9 points shy of the World record. But she wasn’t done, she is the first woman ever to win the Pent and the 400m dash (running 51.03). She did so by over a full second. DeAnne Price broke the World Record in the W Weight Throw throwing 85ft 4inches (26.02m). She is the first woman to ever throw over 26m (previous WR was 25.60m).

    • In the Dutch Championships, Femke Bol broke the 400m which had stood for 40 years! That new record is 49.26 (previous was 49.59). She’s only 22 so get used to seeing her name (and more than Bronze at Tokyo in the 400h).
