Weekly Update

Basketball – NBA: This week’s games. Luka has best game as a Laker so far against Nuggets.

Basketball – NCAAM and NCAAW: This week’s games. Not too many ranked games. Just good ole fashion upsets. NCAAW: New #1.

Golf: Campbell wins first pro tourney.

Hockey: Team USA finally falls in final 2 games of 4 Nations.

Olympic Sports: Shiffrin gets 100! KOR wins at home for ladies skating.

Basketball-NBA:

  • This week’s games:
    • No games until Wed and then there was only one. The Hornets upset the Lakers 100-97 as LeBron missed 2 3-pointers which would’ve tied the game. This game was rescheduled back from Jan 9th.

    • Thursday we were back to normal after the All-Star break. The Knicks beat the Bulls in OT by 2. That would be their only win of the week! The Spurs are without their star Wemby as he is now out for the season with a blood clot. They would still beat the Suns though with newly added Fox having a good game. LeBron put up 40 points at the age of 40 in their win over the Trail Blazers.
    • The Raptors took the Heat to OT by coming back in the 2H. But it was all Heat in OT to win by 9. 4 different players on the Warriors scored 20 or more points for them to crush the Kings 132-108.

    • LeBron and Luka combined for a total 57 points between them in their big win over the Nuggets by 23 in Denver. Luka had his best night with the LA team putting up 32. The Jazz get a big upset with a win over the Rockets to get their 14th win of the season.
    • On Sunday, the Knicks lost to the Celtics again. They swept the matchup this season. The Warriors beat the Mavs by 24 with Dallas’ slow start only scoring 18. The pelicans had a nice show out against the Spurs, despite having a Q with only 14 points. They would still win 114-96. The Raptors had a good week! They also beat the Suns on Sunday by 18.

  • Bucks Bobby Portis got a 25 game suspecision for violating team drug rules. He accidently took Tramadol instead of Toradal. Tramodal was recently added to the banned substance list.

Basketball – NCAA:

  • NCAAM:
    • No upsets on Monday. On Tuesday, we had a big day with lots of games. #7 Texas A&M had themselves a bad week. They lost to #21 Mississippi St by 16 on Tuesday and then lost to #6 Tennessee by 8 on Saturday. Vols Chaz Lanier had a great game, putting up 30 on the Aggies. In a Big Ten ranked matchup, #13 Purdue lost in both halves to lose to #14 Michigan St. The Spartans are now closer to claiming the Big Ten regular season title. BYU had one of the biggest upsets of the week. They crushed #23 Kansas by 23 points! TCU also got a nice win over #9 Texas Tech in a close one. Students stormed the court after that top 10 win.

    • #14 Michigan St beat another ranked team on Friday. This time it was #12 Michigan. They controlled Danny Wolf, keeping him to only 11 points. The Spartans pulled away in the 2H to take the top spot in the conference.

    • There were great games on Sat. #4 Alabama had a nice bounce back win over #17 Kentucky. They would win in both halves and by double digits for the game. In the Big 12, #5 Houston beat visiting #8 Iowa St in a lower scoring game 68-59. The Cyclones were without 2 starters and top scorers though with injuries and illness. Oregon cameback in the 2H scoring 40 points to take #11 Wisconsin to OT. They would steal the win with that momentum. BYU would get another ranked win this week, this time beating #19 Arizona in a close one in Arizona. Oklahoma snuck in a win against #21 Mississippi St, scoring 59 points in the 2H! #24 Ole Miss fell to Vandy after the Commadors started quick and would hold on to win by 5.

    • #13 Purdue would be the only ranked loss on Sunday. That’s their second loss of the week and it comes to unranked Indiana by 15!

  •  NCAAW:
    • Texas is the new #1.
    • #1 ND knocked off #11 Duke early in the week but then falls to #13 NC St in an OT thriller. Duke takes 2 losses this past week, the other to unranked Louisville.
    • Indiana gets a huge top 10 upset over Ohio St.

Golf:

  • PGA: We went to sudden death in the Mexico Open. In the 2nd extra hole, Brian Campbell hit his tee shot into the OB area but it hit a tree and bounced back into play! Sometimes it pays to be lucky than good as he took advantage from there, nailing his putt while Aldrich Potgieter missed his. Both men ended with rounds of 71 and birdied the final hole to take the tournament to the playoff. This is his first professional win ever and it comes on the PGA Tour! Now he will get to play in the Masters, PLAYERS and PGA Championship and 5 other signature events.

Hockey:

  • Team USA lost to SWE in the final round robin games of the 4 Nations on Monday last week. America was hoping that wouldnt mean anything for the final. But alas, CAN got the better of Team USA in the Final. The game was an instant classic though. USA scored early. But CAN goalie, Jordan Binnington became a brick wall in this game, stopping 31 shots including 20 straight. That helped them pull even at 2-2. CAN Connor McDavid scored at 8:18 in OT to give the country up north the win. Less than 1 year til the Winter Olympics where we could see them face off again.

Olympic Sports:

  • Mikaela Shiffrin has done it! She won her 100th World Cup race on Sunday. An event we thought would come much sooner but was derailed by the crash in November. She took 1st after the first run and added to it in the 2nd. With this win, she also ties the WC record for any skier with 155 career podium finished, matching of course SWE Ingemar Stenmark.
  • SUI went 1-2 in the men’s Super G with Odermatt leading Monney.
  • KOR Kim Chae-yeon took the title for the ladies in the Four Continents competition this weekend. She had a SB in the free skate to snatch it away from two Americans (although points wise it wasn’t that close 222 compared to 204). Bradie Tennell and Sarah Everhardt were 2-3 and 4 with Alyssa Liu.
  • Both Nikki Hiltz and Hobbs Kessler get the 3K, 1500m double at the US championships. Winners will represent the USA in China at Indoor Worlds later this year. Many big names have opted out for various reasons.
