Baseball – College: Top 25
Basketball – College: Zion is on the mend with no time table. SEC ref scandalous picture
Basketball – NBA: Towns cleared after car accident. G League Elite Camp is back.
Football – College: Last Chance U coach resigned. Professor Mike Leach?
Football – NFL: Kraft charged with soliciting sex in FL on day of AFC championship game
Golf: DJ wins 20th PGA Tour event. Martin Trainer wins 1st PGA Tour event.
Olympic Sports: Athing Mu’s American record. Break dancing a future Olympic sport? NCAA Softball begins.
Baseball – College:
- College baseball is back. The World Series is set to be played in Omaha, Nebraska starting June 15th! The top 25 teams as of today are above.
- Conference play does not begin until the end of March. So this category may not always appear until then when the sport is in full swing!
Basketball – College:
- Zion will miss the VTech game on Tuesday but is getting better. There is no timetable. So don’t ask is the attitude. The team doesn’t want to put any additional pressure on the projected #1 draft pick.
- SEC ref Anthony Jordan is catching some flack after a photo surfaced of him holding up a LSU shirt. Why you ask? Because LSU beat the Volunteers 82-80 in OT off of 2 free throws with .06 seconds on the clock. And Jordan was a ref during that game. The SEC stood behind Jordan saying he has been a ‘fair and impartial basketball official’ after saying the photo is not acceptable. Confused? So are we.
Basketball – NBA:
- Karl-Anthony Towns, Timberwolves Center, was in a car accident on Thursday which has put him out for the last 2 games. It may have ended his 303 consecutive start streak but that’s nothing. According to Towns, he had a 5% of living let alone suffering minor injuries. He slammed on his breaks to avoid a car crash in front of him when a semi-truck hit his Hyundai Santa Fe going 45mph. Towns has been cleared to play tonight!
- The G League Elite Camp is back and will be held in Chicago May 12-14th giving those a chance that are not chosen for the NBA combine to compete and gain exposure before the NBA draft. 40 players will be accepted.
Football – College:
- Coach Jason Brown at ‘Last Chance U’ (which you might recognize from the Netflix show) has resigned after reportedly telling a German student “I am your new Hitler…” Yaaaaaa there’s no coming back from that.
- Mike Leach will teach a seminar class called ‘Insurgent Warfare and Football Strategies’ this spring. Before you run to sign up, Wazoo students might be important to note that this class will not count for academic credit or even appear on your transcript.
- Alabama and West Virginia have booked a home-and-home for 2026-2027.
Football – NFL:
- Owner of the Patriots (yes the Super Bowl winners), Robert Kraft was charged for 2 counts of soliciting sex after a crackdown on human and sex trafficking bust in Florida. He allegedly went into a massage parlor and offered to pay for sexual acts the day of the AFC Championship game. I am sure we haven’t heard the last of this folks.
Golf:
- Dustin Johnson won the WGC-Mexico Championship at 21 under par, 5 strokes ahead of Rory McIlroy. This is DJ’s 20th win on the PGA Tour which means he is a member of the Tour for life (once he has played on the tour for 15 years which DJ will hit in 2023). With this win, DJ will return to #1 in the World next week (not this week – it’s a complicated calculation but basically due to tournaments from last year rolling off).
- Other news during the Mexico Championship, Rickie Fowler shanked the ball right on hole 10 on Friday morning and dropped for a mulligan. However Fowler dropped from shoulder height, which was the rule before this year, instead of from knee height and was, therefore, penalized another stroke. He ended up scoring a 6 on that par 4.
- Martin Trainer won the Puerto Rico Open on Sunday with 15 under par. This is his first win on the PGA Tour after playing on the Web.com Tour last year. Quite a turnaround considering Trainer had only made 4 cuts on the PGA so far this year after competing in 9 events. Congrats Martin!
Olympic Sports:
- Athing Mu set the high school AND American record for the 600m on Saturday at the USATF Indoor Championships. The 16 year old ran a time of 1:23.57. For those of you confused by the distance, this event is not a typical event seen at track meets and is definitely not in the Olympics (as no indoor track is competed). Next goal: The World Record which she was only .13 seconds away from!
- The Paris 2024 Olympic committee has put its 4 sports into the running for the 2024 games. The 4 Paris chose: Surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing (all debut in Tokyo 2020) but the real shocker – break dancing. The Paris committee arguing that it helps (literally) bring the Olympics to the streets. Karate and squash were among the favorites that were not chosen. The IOC has the official last vote.
- The international boxing association ok’d the uniform additions of hijabs for religious purposes. The organization had until recently been against the addition citing that the hijab could come off and interfere with competition. Looks like they have changed their tune before Tokyo 2020.
- NCAA Softball has begun with the World Series in OKC May 30 – June 4/5th. Above are the top 5 teams.
- There is only so much time in the day people so I will not be closely following this sport.
