Baseball: Correa back to MN.
Basketball-NBA: Morant’s killer dunk. Rockets suspended.
Basketball-NCAA: Lots of Top 25 losses. Miles arrested for murder.
Football – NCAA: Georgia are back-to-back national champions.
Football- NFL: the first 5 wild card games. Hamlin is home!
Golf: Kim wins Sony Open.
Olympic Sports: Valieva not at fault. Knoxville will host 2024 Diving US Trials. Humphries get her 100th podium.
Tennis: Osaka pregnant. Australian Open begins.
Baseball:
- Carlos Correa will return to the Twins after a crazy back and forth during the free agency period. The deal is reportedly 6-years for $200MM. The Giants offered Correa a 13-year $350MM deal and then the Mets offered $315MM for 12 years both until the teams got his physicals. The rumor is that the concerns stem from a broken right leg he suffered as a 19-year old. His leg got surgically repaired and a metal plate inserted. He has not been on the IL since then.
Basketball – NBA:
- Rockets G Jalen Green and F Jae’Sean Tate were suspended one game after leaving the bench during a fight with the Kings on Friday. The Rockets loss 139-114 but the altercation happened during the 4Q. Green and Tate were suspended during the Clippers game on Sunday. This is just more embarrassment to add to the team as the Houston team lost 15 of its last 16 games.
- Grizzlies win 9th straight on a Ja Morant dunk to take them over the Pacers 130-112. This is now the longest NBA active win streak after the Nets 12 game streak lost to the Bulls on Jan 4th.
Basketball-NCAA:
- NCAAM Losses in Top 25 this week: #18 Wisconsin played a close game but lost to Michigan St. Wednesday had 2 ranked matchups, one in the Big 12 and one in the Big East. #10 Texas beat #17 TCU after a slow first half. Then #25 Marquette beat #6 UConn by 5. Unranked Texas A&M put the beat down on #20 Mizzou, winning by 18. We then had a further 2 ranked matchups in the Big 12 on Saturday. #2 Kansas and #14 Iowa St played a close one but the Jayhawks came out on top. #11 Kansas St’s run against top 25 teams finally comes to an end against #17 TCU who outscored the Wildcats by 14. Then there was more carnage in against unranked teams. Kentucky may be 1-3 but they beat #5 Tennessee. #9 Arizona fell to Oregon by 19. Vanderbilt beat #15 Arkansas to make the razorbacks 1-4 in the SEC now. #16 Miami lost in OT to NC St. #18 Wisconsin lost again this time to Indiana in a low scoring game 63-45, yes that’s the whole game scores. Creighton may be unranked but the Blue Jays beat #19 Providence. #20 Mizzou lost for the second time this week, on Saturday it was to Florida. #23 San Diego St got beat by recently unranked New Mexico. And Clemson beat #24 Duke to round out a crazy Saturday. Sunday only had 2 games with ranked teams and both had a top 25 loss. St. John’s beat #6 UConn by double digits and #12 Xavier beat #25 Marquette leaving them undefeated in the Big East.
- Alabama F Darius Miles has been charged with capital murder in an early morning shooting on Sunday that killed a 23 year old woman. The shooting happened near campus and supposedly two cars fired at each other. He is no longer with the team.
Football-NCAA:
- Well the National Championship was not really a game. The Georgia Bulldogs won 65-7 over TCU. QB Stenson Bennett had 6 TDs (4 passing and 2 rushing) while Max Duggan threw 2 interceptions. It was 17-7 at the end of the 1Q but it got out of hand from there. Frankly TCU just got killed. So hopefully you enjoyed the semis because the final was a disappointment of a game. This was the largest margin of victory in a bowl game (if it counts as one).
Football – NFL:
- Wild card games:
- The 49ers destroyed the Seahawks after being down at half by a point. Final score was 41-23 as Brock Purdy shined with 4 TDs (3 passing and 1 rushing).
- The Chargers were up 27-7 at half and it looked to have the game in hand. However, Trevor Lawrence and the Jags were not done. During the second half, the Chargers didn’t score a TD and that’s all the Jags did. As time expired, the Jags put the final blow with a game-winning FG.
- The Dolphins Bills game was a close, back and forth game. Despite not having Tua as their QB, the Dolphins were only down 3 points at half. The two teams scored the same points in the 2H so the Bills won by 3.
- The 8-7 Giants upset 13-3 Vikings coming out strong in the 1Q with 2 TDs. The Vikings kept it close but never managed to gain the lead; final score was 31-24.
- The Bengals vs Ravens game was a close one, tied 17-17 in the 4Q. Until just under 12 minutes, the Ravens were on the 2 yard line driving into the endzone when they fumbled the ball and Bengals DE Sam Hubbard picks it up and runs 98 yards for the go ahead TD, the first go-ahead defensive TD in playoffs since 1996.
- S Hamlin is home from the hospital!
Golf:
- The Sony Open kept people guessing. Jordan Spieth went from in the share of the lead to missing the cut. Si Woo Kim was 3 shots behind on Sunday. Hayden Buckley made a birdie on the 16th to take back his lead. But Kim chipped in on the 17th 30 feet away to tie Buckley. A birdie on the final hole sealed the win. This is Kim’s 4th PGA Tour title but his first in 2 years.
Olympic Sports:
- The RUSADA officially said that Kamila Valieva was not at fault in the doping case at the Winter Olympics last year. Remember she won gold in the team competition before being banned after it was discovered that she had tested positive for a banned substance 2 months prior. The timing was bad as the lab that tested it had been effected by covid which caused the extreme delay.
- Knoxville has been chosen as the host for the 2024 US Olympic trials for US diving. The trials will be held in June 2024 before the Paris Olympics.
- USA Kaillie Humphries was atop the medal podium for the 100th time in her career after getting 1st in the monobob in Germany this weekend.
Tennis:
- Naomi Osaka is pregnant so she will not be playing in any tournaments this year. Congratulations Naomi!
