Golf: Champion Golfer of the Year Cam Smith. Woods MC. Rory disappointed. LIV tour drama.

Olympic Sports: Tour de France through Stage 15. World Athletics Championships – USA goes on a tear.

Soccer: Messi to ‘Merica?

Baseball:

  • The ASG is tomorrow on the 19th and Angels Shohei Ohtani was named as a pitcher and hitter to the team. He did this last season for the first time. There is also a pair of brothers in this year’s ASG, William and Wilson Contreras who play for the Braves and Cubs respectively. At least they will both play for the same team, the National League. This is the first brother pair since 1992. The Yankees lead the way with the 6 All-Star selections. Pitcher’s Verlander and Kershaw have both made their 9th So who is set up to win? Well the National League only has 12 first timers while the American League has 18. But tune in on the 19th to see.

  • Tonight is the Home Run Derby and hands down the story is will Mets Pete Alonso win a 3rd time in a row?
    • Mike Trout is out for the ASG.
  • The Mariners have won 14 games in a row going into the All Star break. In league history. The last game they lost was to the A’s on July 2nd. This has put the Seattle team up to 2nd in the AL West.
  • Red Sox LHP Chris Sale broke his left pinky on this play after the ball came back on a line drive from the batter in Sunday’s game against the Yankees. This game was only Sale’s 2nd start after he returned from a fractured rib. On the final day before the ASG break, Boston lost 13-2.

  • Orioles take high school SS Jackson Holliday as the first round draft pick in the MLB draft on Sunday. He is son of the 7x All-Star Matt Holliday from Stillwater, OK. He did commit to OSU for baseball but will now likely go to the pros. However the newsworthy pick (and not just bc I live in Dallas) was #3 when the Rangers picked Vanderbilt P Kumar Rocker who was drafted 10th last year by the Mets but they did not extend the contract due to medical issues.

Football:

  • Oregon TE Spencer Webb died on Thursday after he hit his head at a popular cliff jumping spot.
  • Anthony Richardson, QB for Florida, wants everyone to stop using AR-15 as his nickname after the Uvalde shootings. Well it was a cool nickname.

Golf:

  • The final major of the year did not disappoint. It looked to be Rory McIlroy’s day after an 8 year major championship drought at the birthplace of golf. However nothing would fall for Rory on Sunday and Viktor Hovland (who were tied with the lead going into the final round) shot over par. AUS Cam Smith had the lowest final 9 holes in a major to drop his total 72 hole score to the -20; tied with the lowest major championship score ever. Smith started 4 shots behind Hovland and McIlroy when he teed off and was still 3 behind going into the final 9.
    • Tiger Woods missed the cut after a +6 on the first day and he just couldn’t recover. As he went over the iconic bridge at the Old Course and came into the clubhouse, he teared up as this may be the last time he will play at St. Andrews
    • Don’t feel too bad for Rory though. He did finish Top-10 in all of the majors this year. Masters 2nd, PGA 8th, US Open T5 & Open 3rd.
    • #GFHint: Why do golfers care so much about this place? St. Andrews is the supposed birth place of golf.
  • Tiger Woods has spoken on the LIV Tour after it was rumored they threw a 9-figured number at him. He is condemning the league and said the players who went over there are basically biting the hand that fed them.

  • Charles Barkley has been targeted by LIV to be an announcer. Also rumors are swirling around Henrik Stenson, European captain for the Ryder Cup, could be going to the LIV and… new major champ Cam Smith. Just rumors on all of this so far. What’s not a rumor, David Feherty is leaving NBC to be an announcer for LIV (according to the NY Post today)!

Olympic Sports:

  • The Tour de France: After a rest day last Monday and a climate change protest delaying Stage 10, Tadej Pogachar relinquished the yellow jersey during Stage 12 to Jonas Vinegaard. In Stage 15, Vinegaard then lost 2 teammates to injury and fell 55km from the finish but still holds the overall lead by 2m 22s. BEL Jasper Philipsen won the sprint stage. Philipsen thought he won Stage 4 and celebrated before realizing that another rider had finished far in front of him. This time his celebration was for real. It is a rest day today – the final one. The race will end this week on Sunday!

  • World Track Championships – it has been American domination in the first American hosted Worlds. Full Schedule
    • The first final to be contested was the Mixed 4x400m relay and the US went with experience to earn Bronze. It was the end of an era as this was Allyson Felix’s final race! Allyson Felix has been competing on the international stage since the Athens Olympics in 2004. She has fought for maternity leave for female athletes and will leave a legacy in the sport as the most decorated athlete in World Champ history.

    • The USA ruled the M 100m! Fred Kerley has a World medal in the 400m and now is also the 100m World Champ. He is the first sprinter to win both! Oh and also it was a USA sweep of the podium Bracy and Bromell got 2nd and 3rd.
    • It was a teammate showdown in the W Pole Vault between Sandi Morris and Katie Nageotte. Katie came back from behind after having misses 2 previous heights before clearing 15’10” (4.85m) on her first attempt. Sandi, who had gone clean up to that point, missed on her first attempt before clearing on her second. They were the only 2 to clear that height.
    • Chase Ealey became the first American woman to win a shot put world title. We have won Olympic gold before but not a world title.

    • The USA seemed primed for another sweep in the 110h; there was just the Olympic champ, JAM Parchment standing in the way. That was until the warm up. Parchment went over a hurdle and looked like scrapped the back of his leg on the hurdle and was out of the race. Now the chance of a sweep went up exponentially. Until new Eagles WR Devon Allen false started by .01 seconds. Holloway repeated his world title and Cunningham, FSU stand out, took silver.

      • #GFHint: In T&F, it’s one and done. If you false start, you’re out. At most major meets (like Worlds and Olympics) the blocks have a sensor in it, and if your reaction time is faster than .1, you’ll be thrown out. The multi events are the only ones who get multiple chances.

    • The 100m wasn’t the only sweep for the Americans in the first weekend of Worlds. The American shot putters also swept the podium. Ryan Crouser had never won a world title, having been denied by his teammate Joe Kovaks, until last night. Fittingly Crouser is from Oregon, having grown up there and he beat Kovaks by .05m. In a surprise finish, Awotunde took Bronze with a new PB to complete the sweep.

    • Sticking with the sweeps, the W 100m was swept by JAM again! Remember they did this at the Tokyo Olympics. But this time the order was different, Kelly-Ann Fraser Pryce first with a time of 10.67 which is a new championship record. She is 35 and a mom and now has 5 of the last 7 world titles. Her Jamaican teammates Jackson got 2nd and Thompson-Herah got 3rd. Fraser Pryce won the 2009, 2013, 2015 & 2019 World titles along with the 2008 & 2012 Olympic gold medals.

Soccer:

  • Messi’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain is up next year and we have at least 1 MLS team who’s ready to roll out the big bucks to get him stateside. Inter Miami has hinted that getting him to he US would be huge for the US. Inter Miami is co-owned by David Beckham.
