I will be out the next two weeks at the Olympics in Paris so I have the full schedule in this post!

Baseball – MLB:

  • MLB this week:
    • To start the week, A’s upset the Astros with a combination of 4 pitchers and win 4-0. They would win the next night too with 5 HRs. The Twins upset the Phillies after Bryce Harper has a 2-run HR to start and end up winning 7-2. The Phillies would shutout the Twins the next day 3-0.
    • On Tuesday, the Pirates P Skenes takes his first L in 12 career big league starts. Cardinals manage to get the winning run in the 9th to win by 1. I was at this next game. Rangers P Jon Gray retired 15 batters and lasted into the 8th inning to beat the White Sox 3-2. The Dodgers would win their 5th game in a row after beating the Giants 5-2. However they would go on to lost the next 3 of 4 games (2 against the Astros).

    • The Braves/Reds tried to have a double header multiple times this week but it kept getting postponed. Elly De La Cruz would get his 50th stolen base in that game though, no one else in the MLB has 30. Wednesday, the Twins get a walk off single in the 9th to beat the Phillies by 1. Same story for the Brewers over the Cubs but with a double. The Rockies tied their record for the most runs ever scored in a single game with 20 runs over the Red Sox 7. Need less to say, they won. The Padres had 20 hits and 12 runs to beat the Nationals by 9.

    • The Mets also scored 12 in the Battle for NY actually called the Subway Series. The Yankees only managed to get 3. The Mets would take both games in that series so far. The Orioles/Marlins game on Thursday went into the 10th inning before the Baltimore team would end up with the win. The Orioles had been struggling lately only winning this 4th game out of the last 12. In their game against the White Sox, Rangers P Scherzer struck out 9, a season high for him and takes over 10th on the all-time Ks list. Speaking of Pitchers, Rays P Bradley has extended his scoreless streak to 23 innings with their win over the Blue Jays 13-0.
    • On Friday, a RBI double brought in the winning run for the Reds in 10 over the Rays. The Mariners would hit back-to-back HRs in the 1stand ultimately beat the White Sox 10-0. The Nationals would win with the same score of 10 over the Cardinals with 8 runs in the 10th. The Mets have won 5 games in a row before the Braves decided they wanted to split the series. Mets won games 1 and 2 3-2 (in 10), 8-4 but then lost the next two badly 0-4 and 2-9. The Rangers would win 5 games in a row including all 4 games against the White Sox but then they ran into the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays would sweep them and outscore them 20-11.

    • Over the weekend, the Astros came back on the Dodgers who were up 5-0 on the Houston team. Houston put up 4 in the 6th and would complete the come back with some action in the 8th and a Bregman HR to win the game in the 9th. The Braves hit back-to-back HRs in their game over the Mets to win 4-0. The Rays did the same thing to the Reds literally to win 4-0. How odd! The Mariners would also get back-to-back HRs but they beat the White Sox 6-3. Giants P Snell strikes out a career-high 15 batters in their win over the Rockies 4-1. They would win the next game in the doubleheader as well 5-0. The Yankees rattle off 3 runs in the 10th to beat the Red Sox 11-8. The Nationals put up 7 in the 6th inning to win 14-3 over the Cardinals.

    • On Sunday, the Orioles scored 6-runs in the 3rd inning to win over the Padres 8-6. The Rays scored their only 2 runs in the game in the 8th inning to beat the Reds who only out up 1. The Rays also had 3 errors to their name for that game. The Pirates/Dbacks game went into extra innings after the Pirates got a game-tying run in the final innings of regulation. They went off in the 10th too bringing in 4 runs. But then the Pirates got pissed when a fan missed catching a HR ball and interfered with a catch which let the Diamondbacks claw back 2 runs. Then they got another HR and it seriously looked like we might need more innings which is insane after scoring 4 in one inning. But the Dbacks would fall one short of the comeback.

  • Padres P Dylan Cease got the 2nd no-hitter in SD history on Thursday. That happened against the Nationals who did have an error.

Golf:

  • Wow I had to check myself on this as I know there was the Senior Open this week but Jhonatthan Vegas is your winner of the latest PGA Tour event. The 39-year-old VEN won the 3M Open on the final hole with a 3-foot birdie to win by 1 stroke over Max Greyserman. This is his first win in almost 7 years after he won his back-to-back Canadian Open in 2017. Talk about a different story, Greyserman is a PGA Tour rookie. Vegas won with a score of -17 at TPC Twin Cities.

Motorsports:

  • More drama in the F1 world this time at the Belgian GP. It was a 3 man race when Mercedes George Russell decided his tires were in great shape and decided not to pit again, meaning he would only pit once all race. Russell was in 6th still in the 21st lap (of 44). In lap 31, Russell mentioned to his team to think about the one stop race. Hamilton was in 1st when he came in and then was gaining but would run out of room. Russell would outlast the others to win over teammate Lewis Hamilton. However, upon further investigation, his car came in 1.5kg under weight which means he is DQ’d. Hamilton gets his 2nd win of the season in the same month.

Olympic Sports:

  • Olympics have started and man the opening ceremonies were very cool! Odd as always but I loved the athletes on the Seine and nothing bad happened. Phew! Notre Dame also rang its bells for the first time since that devastating fire.

  • Let’s start like the Olympics did with soccer.
    • There have already been a few controversies already on the soccer pitch. CAN women’s soccer coach sent home after apparent spying with a drone. ARG vs MOR was the literal first event of the entire games. And it started with scandal. ARG tied up their game in the final 3 minutes in stoppage time. However, later it was apparently called offsides after the game was over. The officials then made the players come back and replay the final 3 minutes hours later and ARG would not score and thus lose their opening game. You could see players avoid fireworks on the field.
    • After losing badly to the host nation 0-3 in game 1, Team USA would rebound nicely. It was the first Olympic men soccer goal in 16 years was scored against New Zealand. Not only that but they would top it and score 3 in that game for the first time since Sydney and to win by their largest margin of victory ever with a score of 4-1. On the women’s side, they would win both of their games with ease. 3-0 against ZAM and then 4-1 over GER.

  • In the pool:
    • Day 1: We started like the Trials with Gretchen Walsh setting a OR in W100 fly. USA sit 1-2 going into final. We had no medalist in M 400 free in the final. GER Martens wins and that is the first gold for GER in swim since 1988 (when they were actually East Germany still). One of the hottest events in the pool was the W 400 free and it lived up to the hype. 6 of the finalists from Tokyo in that race and 3 recent WR holders. AUS Titmus wins her second Olympics gold medal in the 400m free over CAN teenager Summer McIntosh and USA Katie Ledecky. We also had relays on night 1. Team USA women get silver in 4×100 to the dominant AUS. AUS gets fourth straight Olympic gold but it was closer than it was supposed to be (~2 seconds instead of expected 4). The first gold for Team USA in Paris is the men’s 4×100 relay. Hunter Armstrong had a great leg and was under WR pace as the 3rd leg and Caleb Dressel brought it home. That is Dressel’s 8th medal, all of them gold.
    • Day 2: Team USA have had 9 straight Olympics with a medal in the men’s 400IM but favorite Chase Kalisz did not make the final so our position was precarious. However Carson Foster answered the call and ends up on the podium to keep that streak alive. FRA Leon Marchand ran away with it and wins by almost 6 seconds in front of his home crowd. The Americans go 1-2 in the W100 fly. Tori Huske missed a medal in Tokyo by .01 and then turns around and wins gold. This was a huge upset over WR holder Gretchen Walsh by .04. First 1-2 since 1984 in this event. In the final final of the night, USA Nick Fink got his first Olympic medal and tied GBR and breast stroking great, Adam Peaty for silver. ITA upsets everyone for gold by .02 seconds. There was 0.29 between 1-6th

    • Day 3: Summer McIntosh time was 7 seconds faster than anyone else in the field in the 400m IM. But the Americans qualified 1-2. They finish silver bronze. And it was all summer McIntosh who hit her first gold. She won by 6 seconds. USA Hobson grabs the bronze in the M 200 free but man he was in first 30m to go. Top 3 separated by .07. Romania first gold in swim. Some big names from Tokyo: Ryan Murphy got 3rd in the 100back by .02. Lily king out of the medals by .01 in her last Olympics in 100 breaststroke. AUS Titmus and O’Callaghan both trained by the same coach but don’t practice together and competing in the 200 free. O’Callaghan gets her teammate on the final 50. AUS goes 1-2. Hong Kong got bronze for their third swimming medal ever. USA got last.

  • In Gymnastics qualifying: man it had its fair share of drama. Starting with the men, our veteran and all-around leader Brody Malone fell during his pommel horse routine. That put him at a disadvantage to qualify for the all-around and then the nail in the coffin was when he fell twice on his best event, the high bar. This also means that he is out of that event final as well which was his by far best apparatus. Team USA does qualify though. No USA man qualified for the Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar. On the women’s side, we got a little flashback from Tokyo when Simone Biles looked anxious. I know I personally panicked! She was having some kind of calf pain. Nothing has still been announced but she finished all her events and qualified in 1st. Phew! However our reigning floor gold medalist, Jade Carey fell during floor qualifying so she will not defend her gold there. She looked like she had a case of the twisties as she didn’t do her scheduled final pass and fell and rolled out of bounds. It was odd! Suni Lee finished her apparatuses with her best, the uneven bars and she needed a flawless routine to make the all-around final to defend her title over Jordan Chiles. She managed it and we will have 2 All-Around gold medalists competing for it this year. Jordan will not be allowed to compete in the All-around as there is a max of 2 athletes from each country. Sad because she might’ve medaled.
    • In the men’s team event, it was amazing. Talk about a bounce back after qualifying where things seemed to take a turn for the worst, the guys crushed it. Steve Nedoronsik had to wait as he was the final event and the final gymnast and had to wait 2:30hours before he got the chance to compete but he nailed his routine. CHN had it in the bag but then they fell 3x on high bar and JPN slipped into gold medal position! We had gone 3 Olympics without a medal on the men’s side. Out of the last 20 Olympics, them men have only medaled 3xs. It’s the first team medal in 16 years and its bronze.

  • Other stories:
    • In fencing, the women’s foil final was USA vs USA! Lee Keifer from KT defends her Olympic gold title in her fourth Olympics. We also got bronze in men’s foil today by a ND Fighting Irish alum.
    • Team USA added two medals on the board in men’s skateboarding street. Jagger Eaton and Nyjah Huston were sitting 1, 2 before the final round when JPN’s top skater laid down the highest points trick seen in the Olympics. Both men still medaled but it was Silver and Bronze.

    • The women’s rugby team has been quite the social sensation and they are now into the Semifinals despite losing in group play to FRA.
    • Haley Batten won America’s best ever mountain bike medal and it was silver. She was in 15th to start so had a killer comeback! FRA won gold.
    • GBR Laura Colette set a record in dressage for the lowest points ever at 17 1/2 in team eventing. GBR is in great shape to take that medal.
    • In Tahiti, all 5 American women in surfing advance. All names begin with C.
    • After Monday here are the medal standings. JPN leads with 6 golds 12 total. FRA (16 total), CHN AND AUS all have 5 but everyone behind USA in total 20 (3 gold).
