Baseball:

  • Following up on a story from last week: Angels pitcher Archie Bradley broke elbow during his brawl with the Mariners after he fell over the railing.
  • Bryce Harper had pins inserted into his broken thumb after being hit by Snell’s pitch last week. There is no timetable for his return.
  • Robot umpires could be used for the 2024 MLB season. They have been used in Triple A for the 2022 season with some teams on a trial basis.
  • Let’s catch up on the standings since the All Star Game is coming up (July 19):
    • American: Yankees lead with 58 wins so far followed by the Astros
      • The A’s are in last with 27 wins
    • National: The Dodgers and the Mets are tied at the top with 50 wins a piece however the Mets also have 1 more loss.
      • The Reds bottom out that league.

Football:

  • UCLA and USC have jumped off the Pac 12 ship to the Big Ten for the 2024 season. It’s rumored that Oregon and Washington will follow. The Pac 12 is now following the Big 12’s steps and said they are wide open to whomever wants to join. This might also speed up the timeline for departure of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC. Remember the Big 12 is adding Houston, UCF, BYU and Cincinnati. Now the Big 12 might target Utah, Arizona, Arizona St and Colorado (again). Major re-alignment coming and is now officially in progress! The ACC doesn’t look like it will be the landing spot for most of those schools since they just redid their TV deal and the Big 12 schools are geographically a lot closer. The Pac 12 TV deal is up in 2023, making a split of the conference a little bit easier.

  • Birmingham Stallions won the USFL by 3 points over the Phili Stars.

Golf:

  • The 2nd event of the LIV Tour was this weekend in Portland, OR at Pumpkin Ridge GC and now South African Branden Grace is $4.3MM richer. Grace had a killer final day, shooting 7-under to culminate in a total score of 13-under in just 54 holes. Carlos Ortiz, who joined the league this week, took 2nd by 2. The Four Aces, led by Dustin Johnson, won the team competition this week.

  • ENG Paul Casey is the latest defector to the LIV tour. He is #27 in the OWGR. LIV players will be allowed to play in the Open in 2 weeks.

  • JT Poston led the entire time at the John Deere Classic to earn his 2nd PGA Tour victory. His only other win was the 2019 Wyndham Championship so it has been a while. This win also qualifies him for the Open Championship next week. Poston started the final round 3 strokes ahead and finished 3 strokes ahead. He is the 3rd wire-to-wire winner of this tournament in it’s history.
  • Adrian Meronk became the first Polish winner on the European Tour after claiming the Irish Open.

Motor Sports:

  • This weekend was the British GP for Formula 1. And from the get go, it was insane. Alfa Romeo driver, Guanyu Zhou was saved by his halo on his car after his car hit the catch-fencing during this crazy start. That crash took out 3 cars. Protestors forced their way onto the track at one point. And then ESP Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz won his first F1 race. Championship leader, Max Verstappen, dropped down in place after his car was damaged. Sainz has started in 151 F1 races before claiming his victory.

Olympic Sports:

  • The Tour de France is off and running! We’re through Stage 4 and so far BEL Wout Van Aert is wearing the yellow jersey, ahead by 25 seconds.
  • Ryan Lochte is putting all of his silver and bronze medals up for auction. All the proceeds will go to charity for children. He does plan to keep his 6 golds that he has so far.
  • Simone Biles and Megan Rapinoe have both earned the Presidential Medal of Honor.

Tennis:

  • Wimbledon has begun! Serena Williams lost in the first round and Coco Gauff is out in round 3. Djokovic rallied from 2 sets down to beat ITA Sinner; this will be his 11th Semifinal at Wimbledon, playing GBR Norrie. There is one American on each side: for the women, its Amanda Anisimova (who beat Coco Gauff in the 3rd round) and for the men, it’s Taylor Fritz but he has to face Nadal tomorrow for a spot in the Semifinal. Anisimova has to play Halep to get to the Semi’s. TUR Jabeur will play GER Maria on the other side of the bracket. This is Maria’s first GS Semi at the age of 34 and less than a year after the birth of her 2nd  daughter.
