Baseball:

  • The Yankees swept the Cubs in their series with the final game on Sunday. The NY team scored 18 runs in that game to win by 14. Now both NY teams (the Yankees and the Mets) are the first teams to reach the 40 win benchmark. NY is the state to be for baseball right now.
  • White Sox RHP Michael Kopech exited the game against Rangers after just 13 pitches in the first inning. He had right knee discomfort. The White Sox still won the game 8-3.
  • Orioles CEO John Angelos has been accused of seizing control of the team, the opposite of his father’s wishes who wanted his brother, Lou to have the team. More to come on this I’m sure!
  • Angels 1B Jared Walsh hit a cycle and Mike Trout had 2 HRs in their game against the Mets, that they won handily 11-6. The team started the season with a franchise record losing streak and since firing their manager, they’ve had a no-hitter and now the cycle by Walsh. Are things starting to turn around for the LA team?
  • The Brewers finally won a game for the first time in 8 games. They ended their 8 game losing streak against the Nationals on Sunday.

Baseball – NCAA:

  • Omaha is this week! And there were some crazy upsets! #1 Tennessee was beaten by Notre Dame 7-3 in the 3rd #4 VTech lost to Oklahoma 11-2 after taking Game 2 by almost 10. #8 East Carolina was upset (barely) by #9 Texas. Texas took Sunday’s game 11-1. #10 UNC lost in a close one to Arkansas 4-3. The Razorbacks were down by 1 run going into the 9th inning before tying it up and then taking the lead. #11 Southern Miss lost to Ole Miss after only getting 3 hits to lose 5-0.
    • #2 Stanford will play UConn in a winner-take-all game today. Same goes for #3 Oregon St who plays #14 Auburn. Both of those series are tied. Winner advances, loser goes home!

Basketball-NBA:

  • Finals are tied up and we’re heading back to the Bay. Steph got hurt in Game 3 but returned for Game 4 despite rumors that he might not. Good thing he did too because he team won by 10 points to tie the series. Boston took Game 3 by 16 points. Steph has been the leading scorer in every game so far. Game 4 he was responsible for 43 points alone.

Football:

  • The Broncos sold to Walmart heir for $4.65Bn this is a new record for an American franchise. The deal still has to go through approvals but this is the first team to sell since Panthers in 2018 which sold for $2Bn.
  • Cincinnati, Houston and UCF have reached an exit agreement and will join the Big 12 in 2023. The 3 schools will pay $18MM each to the American for leaving. As of right now, Oklahoma and Texas are not set to leave for the SEC until 2025 so for 2 seasons, the conference will have 14 teams!

Golf:

  • Rory McIlroy won the RBC Canadian Open over Justin Thomas and Tony Finau. His final round score of 62 made for an exciting day and the Canadian crowd was chanting his name. Thomas closed with 2 bogeys to give Rory the lead by 2 strokes. Rory has won 21xs on the PGA Tour, one more than the Greg Norman, the head of the LIV tour. Shade was thrown.
    • Justin Rose was on 59 watch after 3 eagles and with 3 holes to go but bogeyed the 16th and ended with a course record tying score of 60.

  • The Saudi-backed, LIV Tour debuted this weekend in London. Charl Schwartzel won the first event and with that took $4.75MM, $750k for the top team prize and then $4MM for winning individually. That is more money than he has earned over the last 4 years combined. Check out the LIV episode for more on the new tour. But I will say that the PGA Tour has suspended all the players that competed. However they will be allowed to play in the US Open this week. The USGA, who governs the tournament, said it would not change who has qualified for the tournament… this year.
    • Patrick Reed, Pat Perez and Bryson DeChambeau will be joining the league next event which will be in the US in Portland at the end of the month.
  • Tiger Woods became the 3rd athlete to ever reach Billionaire status. Michael Jordan and LeBron are the other 2.

Hockey:

  • The Stanley Cup Finals are set!
    • Last Monday, the Avalanche finished off the Oilers in OT to sweep the conference finals. The Colorado team was behind until the 3rd period where they scored 4 to force OT. They are now West Champs.
    • The Lightning tied up the series with their win on Tuesday winning 4-1. Thursday they won 3-1 to take the series lead and finally on Saturday they finished off the Rangers 2-1. The Tampa Bay team took the series 4-2.

Horse Racing:

  • I kid you not, ESPN actually had ‘Less is Mo’ in their article. Mo Donegal pulled away on the home stretch to take the Belmont over filly Nest. Mo Donegal was the betting favorite with odds of 5-2. Nest stumbled coming out of the gate but made a nice recovery to take 2nd and was coming on strong before running out of real estate.

Olympic Sports:

  • This weekend was NCAAs for Track & Field. Florida reigning supreme taking both men & women’s national championships, 7 event titles, 5 school record and 19 podiums.

    • Florida took the men’s team title and Joseph Fahnbulleh was a huge reason why coming in with 20 points himself. He won the 100m and 200m. He competed at the Olympics for Liberia. Florida St Trey Cunningham put on a clinic in the 110h with a 13 flat with shaky hurdles at 5 & 7. NC A&T Randolph Ross, Olympic gold medalist in the 4×4 in Tokyo, won the 400m.

    • Florida also took their first Women’s Outdoor title to round out the track season on Saturday. Anna Hall was insane and tried the 400h and hept double; she ran the 400h final 20 minutes before the final event in the hept, 800m. She was on pace to set a new championship record (which is from 1995) but couldn’t do it after the double. Anna did however get 2nd in the 400h and 1st in the hept. That’s 18 points just from her. Jasmine Moore also won both the LJ and TJ to give the Gators 20 points. Texas made the title race close but had a couple of ladies fall short to lose the team title in the 5000m. Kentucky sprinter, Abby Steiner had a disappointing 100m getting 3rd but came roaring back in the 200m, taking the title with a meet record 21.80 and then running a killer split in the 4x400m.
  • Eagles’ WR Devon Allen ran 12.84 in the 110h, the 3rd fastest time ever at the NYC Grand Prix on Sunday. That time was only 0.04 seconds off the WR and he beat the World Champion Gran Holloway to do it. USA Championships will be later this month and World Championships will be in July.
  • Allyson Felix has competed in her last Diamond League meet ever. She got 7th in the 200m and a full second behind the leader.
  • GEO TJ Sabina Allen is now banned for 4 years after testing positive for 2 banned substances at an event last May.
  • Ice Skating has raised their minimum Olympic age to 17 years old for the 2026 Olympics. That means the 15 year old women who used to compete will not be able to, including Kamlia Valieva.

Softball:

  • Well the #1 team Oklahoma was #1 for a reason and it showed. Unranked Texas made it to the final, upsetting Oklahoma St to get there. The first game was ugly to say the least. There is no run rule in the final but man there should be. Game 1 was 16-1. Texas scored their lone run in the top of the first inning and never scored again. OU came out swinging scoring 5 runs in the 1st and had 10 by the end of the 3rd Every inning after that they only scored 2… Game 2 had to be closer right? Texas was undefeated in post season must-win games. The horns wanted revenge and took it early. They scored 2 runs in the first inning and were leading until the 4th when the Sooners tied it up. OU then followed up the next 2 innings with 4 runs apiece to take a 10-2 lead going into the final inning. The Texas team did not give up however, even after OU pulled Alo and many of their other players. The Horns put another 3 runs on the board before the Sooners could finish them off but it was very much done. The Sooners end the season 59-3, losing to Texas, Oklahoma St and UCLA total in the entire season.

  • The GOAT is done! Joclyn Alo ends her collegiate career with 122 HRs, the most ever in the sport. She also had a batting average this season of .515. To put that in perspective, the best batting average in MLB history is Ty Cobb with .3662.
