Baseball – MLB:

  • Updates from the week: The Tigers had lost 9 in a row before Monday’s game against the Braves when they won in the 10th They needed 15 hits to do it too. That wasn’t the only game that went into the 10th on Monday, the Rockies bested the Red Sox in a rain delayed 10th inning game 4-3 and the Reds beat the Royals by 1 in 10. Also the Angels/Rangers matchup went into 12 before Ohtani had his 2nd HR to win 9-6. Mets P, Drew Smith became the 2nd Mets P to be ejected from a game for an illegal foreign substance. The Yankees won that game to start the Subway Series. Red P Brandon Williamson gets his first big league W after beating the Royals 5-4. Oddly enough the MLB worst (A’s) beat the MLB best (Rays) by 1 on Monday and Tuesday to win 7 straight games, a season high. It didn’t last long as they lost the next 5 so normalcy is restored. It was a good time to do it though as Game 7 was on the night of their reverse boycott, drawing in a season-high 27k fans. The Braves beat the Tigers 2xs on Wed with a double header 10-7 and 6-5. Reds had 3 HRs in the 5th inning to beat the Royals and sweep the series.

  • Continued: The Nationals coach was not happy with the baseline rule on Wednesday in their loss to the Astros but they avoided the sweep on Thursday winning in 10. The Yankees may have split the Mets match up but they got swept by the Red Sox including a beat down 15-5 to start the series. The Angels shutout the Royals in Game 1 of their series which was the Royals 10th straight loss. They beat the Angels the next day though to end that nasty streak. Schwarber hit a HR on the 1st pitch of the game against the A’s. They won that game and their win streak now sits at 6. The Braves also sit at 6 straight after hitting a grand slam on the Rockies. The Giants rout the Dodgers 15-0 for their worst home loss in history. The Reds swept the Royals and Astros which makes their win streak to 8 now. The Marlins swept the Nationals which put them 10 wins over .500 which is the first time since 2011.

Baseball/Softball – NCAA:

  • Omaha updates: Well we’ve had the first 3 days of the tournament and it has been close! Only 1 game was decided by more than 1 run.
    • In the first day, Oral Roberts beat TCU and Florida beat UVA both with a score of 6-5. Oral Roberts was down 5-2 in the 9th before they rallied back scoring 4 to beat the Horned Frogs. UVA was scoreless until the 7th when they put up 4 runs. But then Florida scored 1, 1 and 3 in the final 3 innings to take the W. The 2nd day, Wake Forest showed why they were #1 and beat Stanford. Each of the 3 first innings had a single run scored (S, WF, S) then Wake had a couple of batters walked and brought them home for the 2 runs to win by 1. LSU was the only team to win by more than 1 run over Tennessee. LSU was up 5-0 going into the 8th and the Volunteers tried to start a rally but fell 2 runs short. LSU put the final run up in the bottom of the 8th and final was 6-3.
    • The 2nd round was the winners of day 1 and losers of day 1 with the loser of the losers match going home. Florida was done putting up their points by the end of the 4th, putting up 5. ORU only had 1 run before the 7th when they got a small rally going scoring 2. In the 9th, they needed 2 to tie and 3 to win. With 1 out, the Golden Eagles got bases loaded but only managed to score 1 and are now 1 loss away from being eliminated. In the losers match, both TCU and UVA put up a run in the 1st. It was a game of 1 runs. TCU put up one in the 3rd, 6th and the 8th. UVA put 1 up in the 7th and 8th but fell short by 1 and has now been eliminated from the CWS.

Basketball – NBA:

  • The Nuggets are NBA Champions for the first time ever! The Denver team has been a franchise for 47 years before winning in Game 5 against the Heat 94-89. Game 5 didn’t start off great for the Nuggets who missed 23 of 28 3-pointers and they trailed by 10 points at halftime. But they have the best pair in post season. Jokic and Murray are the first teammates to average 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game. Jokic is also the first player to lead the post season in points (600), rebounds (279) and assists (190). The parade was chaos including a fire truck hitting a cop causing a lower leg injury. How did Jokic celebrate? He is home in Serbia watching his family horse in the harness races.
  • The Wizards are trading 3x All-Star Bradley Beal to the Suns likely for Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and some picks. The deal isn’t done yet but it is in progress and would be a blockbuster deal.

Football:

  • Coach Prime, aka Deion Sanders, might have to have his foot amputated due to a circulation issue from 2021 (he already lost 2 toes from that incident). Colorado sold out their Spring Game and will open up their season against CFP Final Four TCU followed by former Big 12 rival, Nebraska in week 2 so hopefully he doesn’t miss too much time.
  • San Diego State has told the Mountain West that they plan to exit the conference but news has not dropped about a Power 5 spot.
  • Ray Lewis III, son of Super Bowl champ Ray Lewis, has died of an overdose (suspected). He was 28 years old. Lewis III played CB for Miami for 2 seasons then went to Coastal Carolina in 2015.
  • USFL: the South division is in a much better spot with their two teams at 8-2 and 7-3 vs 4-6 for the Maulers and Panthers.

Golf:

  • It was Father’s Day yesterday which means it was also the US Open. Although Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele started hot, tying the record with 62s, Rickie Fowler ended with a 75 to give up the lead. First time winner on the PGA Tour, Wyndham Clark managed to outlast Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Smith who were all close behind. His final score -10 was enough to win by 1. He was up by 3 with just 4 holes to go but then made back-to-back bogeys. Lucky for Clark, Rory couldn’t make better than par on those holes. Clark was in disbelief on the 18th. That wasn’t the only drama in the final round, Tommy Fleetwood shot a 63, one of the only 3 men to score a 63 in the final round of a major – oh and one of those was him at a different major.
  • The LIV/PGA Tour merger is now under investigation.

Hockey:

  • The Vegas Golden Knights are the Stanley Cup Champions! In just their first year after they entered the league, the Vegas team made playoffs and the final. In just 6 years, the won the Stanley Cup. Only 6 teams have won the cup in their first 6 years but previous 5 were all pre-WWII. Technically the Oilers also did it in just their 5th NHL season but they were in the World Hockey Association first and had Wayne Gretzky. Right Wing Mark Stone is the first player to score a hat trick in the final since 1996. The Knights were up 3-1 in the series and put an exclamation point on it, winning Game 5 9-3.

Motorsports:

  • F1 Max Verstappen won his 6th race of the year at the Canadian GP this weekend. This is notable because it is his 41st of his career which ties Ayrton Senna’s win record, sitting in 5th all-time. We have a ways to go before he take the top spot though as Lewis Hamilton has that crown with 103 career wins. However this was also Red Bull’s 100th victory since they made their debut in 2005.

Olympic Sports:

  • It was a sad week in the cycling world as Tour de Suisse competitor Gino Mader died Friday after falling down a ravine in his home race at the age of 26. Mader and USA Magnus Sheffield both fell around the same point during the mountain stage into La Punt. Medics found Mader motionless and unconscious in the water and resuscitated him before they airlifted him to the hospital where he later died. Sheffield had a concussion and bruises but is alright. Mader’s death was announced just 30 minutes prior to the start of the 6h stage, which was delayed for a tribute and then later cancelled. Mader had competed for Bahrain Victorious since 2021. Mattias Skjelmose won the Tour de Suisse this weekend and dedicated his win to the fallen cyclist.
  • Sticking with cycling news, 30+ riders were DQ’d from the U23 Giro d’Italiana for hanging onto team cars to use them as a boost in the race. It was very obvious and it appeared the cyclists didn’t know they were being recorded as most of them were joking about it. 24 of the 31 riders were ITA.

  • USA Sprinter Tori Bowie died from childbirth complications. Sprinters including Allyson Felix have been outspoken on social media that 3 of the 4 gold medalists on the relay team all had trouble during childbirth. Bringing to light, the issue of black women mortality.

Soccer:

  • Becky Sauerbrunn is out for the World Cup due to a foot injury. She would’ve been the most experienced on the team before the World Cup. And no team has successfully completed the three-peat yet and the US is trying to be the first. The World Cup starts July 20th.
