Hockey: Finals have begun. Avalanche have advantage.

Olympic Sports: FINA World championships. FINA makes ruling on trans women. US Outdoor Champs.

Soccer: 2026 World Cup cities announced.

Baseball:

  • The Jays ended the Yankees 9-game win streak. After the Jays when up 2-0, the Yankees pull back to lead 8-3 in the 6th. They were 17-0 after leading by this much in the later half of the game. However the 7th inning came crashing down on the Yankees, Hernandez hit the go-ahead 30-run HR to end their streak. The game ended 10-9.
  • Angels Mike Trout hit 5 HRs in 5 game series against the Mariners, wrapping it up on Sunday to win 4-0. He hit 2 HRs in the opener and the Angels took 4 of the 5 game series. These 5 HRs tied the record by a player in a single series against the Mariners. This is big because the Angels had lost 18 of the last 20 games, including 14 straight.
  • Pirates rookie, Jack Suwinski, is the first rookie ever to have a 3 HR game, including a walk-off. He was responsible for the pirates not getting swept by the Giants on Sunday, winning 4-3.
  • Dodgers Mookie Betts is on IL after this collision with Cody Bellinger in the OF chasing a ball in Wednesday night’s game against the Angels. He has a cracked rib.

Baseball – NCAA:

  • The College World Series (aka Omaha) is in full swing and it has not disappointed! Remember this is double elimination until the final round where we go to best of 3 series.
    • The Sooners started it off beating #5 Texas A&M 13-8. The biggest comeback in CWS is only 4 runs and the Sooners had 8 by the end of the 2nd.
    • Notre Dame kept their upset streak going (they took down #1 Tennessee to get here) by taking down #9 Texas 7-3. The 5th inning was the breaking point in the game; the Irish scored 3 runs in that inning. No other inning had more than 1 run per team.
    • On the other side of the bracket, the upsets kept coming. #2 Stanford fell to Arkansas 17-2. The game started off a little slow, 1-1 until the 5th. Then the Razorbacks got rolling: 5 runs in the 5th, 3 in the 7th, 2 in the 8th and 6 in the 9th easily put away the Cardinals.
    • Ole Miss defeated their fellow-SEC team #14 Auburn 5-1. The Rebels struck first with 2 runs in the 1st and just every once in a while tacked on runs. It was 5-0 in the 6th before the Tigers got their first and only run.
    • 2nd round: Both OU and Notre Dame have been on a hot streak, so what do you get when you get these two together? A great game! The Sooners lead 5-0 going into the 6th when the Irish struck back scoring 2. OU answered in the same inning with 1 and after that it was a pitching battle. The Sooners came out on top 6-2 and even made Sports Center with this catch.

Basketball-NBA:

  • The Warriors gained the series advantage on Monday, winning 104-94, despite a great 3rd quarter by the Celtics. Jason Tatum was the leading scorer of the game with 27 points. Steph actually did not score a single 3-pointer, something we haven’t seen since Oct 2018. So we headed into Game 6 with a one-game advantage to the Warriors. They were 0-3 in road clinching games while the Celtics were 3-0 when facing elimination. That meant the odds were high we were going to get a great game and potentially a Game 7. However, not this time. Golden State won it all in Game 6, winning 103-90. The Golden State team won their 4th title in 8 years. They did it on the final game with consistency, putting up 27 points in every quarter except the 3rd. The Celtics faltered in the 2nd only scoring 17 and that was enough to make the difference. Steph Curry won his first ever Finals MVP. The championship parade is set for today.
  • Davidson, Steph’s alma mater, will retire his #30.
  • WNBA: Sue Bird will retire after this season. She is currently 41 and has spent her entire career (21 years) with the Seattle Storm.

Golf:

  • Matt Fitzpatrick had not won on US soil or on the PGA Tour until the US Open at Brookline yesterday. He had a 1-shot lead over Dallas natives, Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris going into the final hole when he hit the 18th fairway bunker. However it didn’t matter, he hit a clutch pitch out of that bunker for an easy par. He hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation, something that only 2 golfers have done in the last 30 years. Matt had won the US Amateur at this same course back in 2013 and he tried to not change anything from that experience, which obviously paid off. He even stayed with the same host family as he did at the US Am. Only 9 players finished under par!
    • This was a big deal for his caddie, Billy Foster, too who had been to ~160 majors but never won. He had never had a winner after 40 years on the bag and caddying for 45 winners. Until yesterday!
    • Will missed a 14-foot putt for birdie to force a playoff on the 18th. He has 6 top-10s in the last 9 major starts and has been runner up 3x. To add insult to injury, he was runner up in the PGA Championship, which he lost in a playoff and US Open in the same year. His 3rd was the 2021 Master to Hideki Matsuyama. He was this close yesterday…
  • LIV golf will apply for Official World Golf Rankings points today. However they have an uphill battle as current PGA Tour commish and outspoken critic of the league, Jay Manahan is on the board who will vote on this initiative.

Hockey:

  • The Stanley Cup Finals have begun! And in no surprise, the Avalanche continue to be as dominate as they were all season. But I think it is a surprise by how much. The Avalanche scored 7 goals in Game 2, which is the most ever allowed by Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilenskiy in his career. Game 1 was just a little closer; it actually went to OT. The Avalanche got a quick start scoring 3 in the first period however the Lightning clawed back to tie the game and head into OT. It only lasted 1:23 before Burakovsky scored. However we head back to Tampa, where the Lightning have a 7-game win streak on the line.

Olympic Sports:

  • FINA Worlds has begun (and my bad for not giving yall the heads up). The meet will go from the 17th of June through July 3rd. Swimming will end on the 25th. Schedule
    • Katie Ledecky retook the 400m Free World title and got the golds rolling for the USA in the first day of finals. This is her 4th title in the event including 2013, 2015 and 2017. To be fair, Titmus who took the title in 2019 and holds the WR was not in attendance at Worlds. The men also took gold in the 4x100m Free Relay over AUS by 1.46 seconds.
    • Sunday was just the 2nd day of finals with 4 races and the USA took 3 golds. Tori Huske won the W 100m Fly, setting a new American Record. Caleb Dressel took the 50m Fly (non-Olympic event) while fellow-American Michael Andrew got 3rd. In an upset, USA Alex Walsh beat AUS McKeown in the 200m IM and posted the 5th fastest time ever to do it. 16-year old Leah Hayes got the bronze in that event.
    • Katie Ledecky claimed her 2nd gold of the championships in the 1500m, beating the next competitor, USA Katie Grimes, by 14 seconds. Another USA gold on Day 3 was Reagan Smith in the 100m Back, who lead her fellow American Claire Curzan to bronze. Ryan Murphy got 2nd and Hunter Armstrong got 3rd in the 100m back but that wasn’t the headline. ITA Thomas Ceccon clinched gold and broke the WR, which for the first time in 34 years is not held by an American in this event.
    • Finals:
      • June 20: W 1500m Free, W 100m Back, W 100m Breast, M 200m Free, M 100m Back

  • FINA voted Sunday to restrict trans women from competing in some elite races (like Worlds and the Olympics) if they had not completed transitioning by age 12. They are considering an open category in some races for those athletes who transitioned after that time period. This is to combat the scientific fact that if you go through puberty as a boy, there is a distinct advantage over females who went through puberty as a girl.
  • Track & Field will leave the European Championships after the 2022 season in Munich. They will hold their own separate event in 2026. This is not unheard of, swimming did the same thing after the 2018 Euro Championships.

  • US Outdoor Championships begin to determine who will rep the red, white & blue at worlds this week.
    • Finals:
      • June 23: W Hammer, W LJ, M Discus,

    • Full schedule
  • Ahead of that JAM Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce has set the World Leading time in the 100m at the Diamond League meet in Paris this past weekend. That time was 10.67 – something to watch out for at USAs.
