Baseball – MLB: Dog bit your hand? Pride month maybe?
Baseball – NCAA: Regionals this past weekend and Super Regionals coming up!
Basketball-NBA: Finals are on and it’s 1-1. LeBron billionaire. Snyder steps down. Kobe’s jersey.
Football: Gore retires as a 49er.
Golf: Horschel wins Memorial. LIV tour is here!
Hockey: Conference Finals are underway.
Horse Racing: Belmont this weekend.
Olympic Sports: Sydney McLaughlin almost ties her WR in first race of the year. NCAAs this weekend.
Soccer: Messi scores 5. UKR out of World Cup.
Tennis: Nadal and Iga take home their French Open trophies.
Baseball:
- Remember when you would use the ‘dog ate my homework’ excuse, well Mets P Max Scherzer remembers… after his dog bit his pitching hand. He did say that the wound wont stop him from pitching but still! Scherzer is already recovering from an oblique strain so at least we know that won’t make it worse.
- Unless you live under a rock (social media speaking) you now it’s Pride month! However some of the Rays have opted out of wearing the rainbow colored logos on their uniforms for Pride night on Saturday. To me, this seems like a bigger deal than the Cardinals rookie who had to apologize for tweets granted with gay slurs aimed at a friend but from almost 10 years ago. The Rays manager said this shouldn’t divide the team as ‘conversations in the locker room leading up to this decision has been constructive and sharing of different perspectives.’
Baseball – NCAA:
- This weekend was the Regional round of the post season. Some of the regions required all 7 games and those final games are today! Then we move onto a best of 3 series Super Regional then the CWS in Omaha.
- Game 7s that are today are Coastal Carolina vs ECU; Louisville vs Michigan; UCLA vs Auburn; Florida vs Oklahoma
Basketball-NBA:
- Finals are on!
- Game 1 did not disappoint. Going into the 4th quarter, the Warriors were up 92-80 going into the 4th Steph had 19 points in the 1Q alone to help them build that lead. But the Celtics came roaring back outscoring the Golden State team 40-16. That means the Boston team took Game 1 120-108. Game 2 was much closer with the first 2Qs being within 1 point each. However the 3rd Q, Golden State got hot going on a 35-14 run. The Warriors destroyed the Celtics 107-88 including this amazing buzzer beater from half court.
- Jazz HC Quin Snyder resigns after 8 years with the team. Management tried to convince him to stay but he said it was time. His overall record was 372-264. 8 seasons is the 3rd longest tenure among active coaches (tied with Golden State and behind the Spurs and Heat coaches).
- Lebron is the first active billionaire ever in the NBA.
- Kobe Bryant’s rookie season Lakers jersey sells at auction for $2.73MM.
Football:
- Want a pick me up story on your Monday? RB Frank Gore, age 39, signed a one-day deal with the 49ers so he could retire as a 49er and he will be inducted into their HoF. The SF team drafted him in 2005 in the 3rd round. Gore played 16 seasons in the NFL, 10 of which was with the 49ers.
- The Big 12 had a record setting year and will distribute $426MM to its 10 schools, a 25% increase Y/Y and even 10% more than its peak pre-pandemic. Remember there is a shuffling of schools and the league will be as many as 14 schools before OU and Texas leave for the SEC. There will also be a new commish after Bob Bowlsby retired. He had been commish since 2012.
Golf:
- Billy Horschel took his first individual stroke play title since 2017 this weekend when he won the Memorial which is known as Jack Nicklaus’ course and tournament. His lead was 5 shots at one point but fell down to 2 strokes when Billy reached the 15th. Here’s what happened there. That eagle solidified his victory, where he won by 4 strokes. This is Billy’s 7th PGA Tour title but his first with his kids in tow.
- But all eyes are on the new Saudi league, the LIV tour. Dustin Johnson dropped a bomb last week that he is going to the new league. Now Kevin Na is following suit. Na actually resigned from the PGA Tour, which he has won 5xs. This should save Na from any legal action and potential discipline that others may be charges with for playing with the rival league. 13 players have been listed for the first LIV tournament to be held in London this week. Other players include Louis Oosthuisen, Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Talor Gooch.
-
- * New developing story* Phil Mickelson will make his return to golf this weekend at the tournament in London. Oh also Rickie Fowler is now on the start list! Are the tides turning?
- The LIV tour’s first event is this week in London and will be 54 holes with no cut! More interesting… it’s a team event. The draft for this week will be on Tuesday June 7. So why do this? Well it’s rumored that DJ received $120-$150MM for playing in the league. To put that in perspective, that is more than what Tiger Woods has made on course his entire career ($120MM in official on course earnings).
Hockey:
- Stanley Cup Playoffs continue with the conference finals.
- The Avalanche have so far had no problem with Wayne Gretzy’s final team, leading the series 3-0 after this past week. The CO team took Game 1 in a high scoring game 8-6. They also took Game 2 shutting out the Oilers 4-0. Game 3 was 4-2.
- The Rangers went up 2 games in their series after taking Game 1 6-2 and Game 2 3-2 over the Lightning. But the Rangers rallied on Sunday to win Game 3 3-2 bringing the series to 2-1.
Olympic Sports:
- Sydney McLaughlin was just off her WR time in the 400h after returning to the track for her first competition since she got married. Looks like she hasn’t missed a beat. We are ~50 days from Worlds being held in Eugene OR.
- RUS will still be banned for Worlds according to the track governing body. Something to keep in mind.
- Special Olympics has begun this week in Florida and there is no vaccine mandate. This is a reversal of what was originally planned after the state of Florida threatened fines.
Soccer:
- ARG beats EST 5-0 all of which were scored by Messi. This extends ARG’s win streak to 33 games. Messi has only had one other 5-goal game in his career and 1st for ARG.
- Wales ended UKR’s bid for a world cup spot with their win this weekend.
Softball:
- The CWS is well underway and the finals will be set tonight! The tournament is double elimination and one side of the bracket game used all if necessary games. UCLA handed Oklahoma their 3rd loss of the season to create a double header, winner-take-all game. The other 2 teams that were responsible for the Ls on #1 Oklahoma’s schedule faced off for the other spot. Oklahoma State and Texas play tonight. If Texas wins, they will play again.
Tennis:
- C’est fini! The French Open is over and the finals were ruled by the big favorites.
- Coco Gauff made her first GS final and is the youngest American to make it since Serena Williams in 1999 (btw Coco wasn’t born yet). However the #1 ranked player was too much for the young American, beating her in straight sets 6-1 and 6-3. Iga has won 35 straight matches and this is her 2nd French Open title. Coco also lost in the doubles final.
-
- King of the Clay retained his crown. Nadal claimed his 22nd GS title and 14th French Open title after beating Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. Nadal won the last 11 games to clinch the title. His overall record at Rolland Garros is now 112-3 and 14-0 in finals. Also Nadal did all of this with a numb foot. He had received an injection into the nerve in his left foot so he could play. This puts Nadal 2 GS titles in front of Djokovic and Federer.
- Serena and Venus are both not listed to play at Wimbledon so far…
