Weekly Update

Basketball-NBA: Warriors vs Celtics OT. Smart fined for Young.

Basketball-NCAA: Power 5 Champions. Selection Sunday and March Madness begins!

Football – NCAA: Iowa covers lawsuit.

Football- NFL: Ramsey to Dolphins. Carr to Saints.

Golf: Scheffler wins PLAYERS. Woods ex gf suing over break up.

Olympic Sports: Shiffrin most WC titles ever! Odermott wraps up the season. NCAA Indoor T&F – Woo Pig

Basketball – NBA:

  • We knew the Warriors Bucks game was going to be a good one and it lived up to the hype. The game went into OT after Curry shot a 3 with 19 seconds left in regulation to tie the game. That set the tone of things to come as Curry scored 36 points in the Warriors 125-116 win.
  • Marcus Smart was fined $25k for taking down Trae Young during the Celtics Hawks game on Monday. The Celtics Guard initiated an altercation and pulled Young to the floor and he was ejected with 1:25 remaining. Didn’t matter though as the Celtics still won 134-125.
  • Also good news for Americans, the national team director is losing restrictions for the Olympics for NBA players by not requiring them to play on Team USA (required games, trainings, etc).

Basketball-NCAA:

  • It is finally time! Selection Sunday was last night and the bracket is set! Houston, Kansas, Purdue and Alabama are the top seeds. The NIT is also going on but I wont be covering that because I’m just one person!

  • Power 5 Conference Regular Season Champions:
    • Big 10: Purdue held off Penn St for the title. Although Purdue led by 17 at one point in the 2H but only won by 2 points. Purdue is a #1 seed.
    • SEC: Alabama won its 2nd title in 3 years by beating Texas A&M handly 82-63. Alabama is a #1 seed.
    • Pac 12: Arizona upset UCLA to take the Pac 12 title. It was a close game! The Wildcats were down 1H but came back to win by 1.
    • Big 12: Kansas had a rough 2H and got killed by Texas 56-76. However the Jayhawks still earned the #1 seed.
    • ACC: Duke won its first ACC title under their new HC Jon Scheyer. UVA only scored 17 points in the 1H and Duke only scored 24 for a low scoring game. Duke won 59-49.
    • American: Memphis actually upset Houston to win the American, but Houston still earned a #1 seed.
    • Big East: Marquette beat Xavier by 14.

  • Syracuse HC Jim Boeheim is being replaced after 47 seasons! His final game was vs Wake Forest on the court that carries his name. Boeheim went 1015-441 with the Orange, which is the 2nd most wins in D1 history (behind of course Coach K). He also led them to 35 tournament appearances, 5 Final Fours and 1 natty in 2003.
  • On the other side of the coin, Ole Miss has hired disgraced Texas HC Chris Beard. Yes the one that was arrested after an altercation with his fiancé.

Football – College:

  • Iowa Athletic Department is paying $4MM for the full settlement to the former football players who sued for racial discrimination.

Football – NFL:

  • Rams have traded CB Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins. Miami fans will be happy with that since Ramsey is one of the best CBs in the league. They will now have 2 #1 WRs and 2 #1 CBs.
  • Derek Carr has been traded to the Saints for a $150MM deal for 4 years. Carr had been with the Raiders for 9 seasons before that.

Golf:

  • It was the weekend of the PLAYERS Championship, often considered as the 5th major. TPC Sawgrass provides plenty of thrills especially on hole 17. But the result was no contest. Scottie Scheffler won by the largest margin of the season this year, 5 shots. He is also just the 3rd golfer to shoot all 4 rounds at TPC Sawgrass in the 60s. This win put Scottie back at the top spot in the World (Rahm went home with a stomach bug earlier in the week) and is his 6th win in just 27 starts on the PGA Tour.
  • Tiger Wood’s ex gf Erica Herman (6 years) is filing a complaint against her NDA. The Speak Out Act was enacted so it nullifies NDAs in the event of sexual harassment or assault. No official split announcement was made before that but they have not been seen together since last US Open (it’s official now). No allegations of any sexual harassment as of yet. She is also trying to get a $30MM settlement for a verbal tenancy agreement saying she could live at his residence for another 5 years, despite them breaking up in October.

Olympic Sports:

  • Mikaela Shiffrin won the record tying 86th World Cup title on Friday by winning the giant slalom. She then broke Ingemar Stenmark’s record on Saturday in the slalom making it her 87th WC title. Her brother surprised her in the crowd to congratulate her. It was a fitting way to break the SWE great record as it was in his own country. Shiffrin said it is just an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as him. That record stood since 1989.
  • Sticking with alpine skiing, SUI Olympic Champion Marco Odermatt won the slalom WC title on Saturday to lock up the overall title for the season.

  • NCAA Indoor T&F Championships was this weekend in NM. Arkansas swept the men’s and women’s competition. The men’s was no contest but the women’s came down to the final race (the 4x400m relay of course) to beat Texas. Razorback, Britton Wilson broke the American record in the 400m running 49.48, topping the previous mark set by Talitha Diggs of Florida just last month. Wilson actually passed Diggs on the final 100m to claim the natty. Texas Senior Julien Alfred did the 60m/200m double and did both in just under WR fashion. The M&W Triple Jump Collegiate records both went down. Kyle Garland from Georgia destroyed the Collegiate indoor record and was just 6 points shy of the Indoor WR set by Ashton Eaton. Washington took 3 of the top 5 spots in the men’s mile at nationals!
