Weekly Update

Let March Madness begin!

Baseball: Season will begin on April 7th as a new CBA deal has been reached.

Basketball-NBA: LeBron hits 10k in all 3 major stats. Irving allowed in Barclays… as a fan.

Basketball-NCAAM: March Madness begins Tues with First Four. Brackets are due Thurs. Championship recap.

Football: Tom Brady is back! Some extensions.

Golf: Players Championship will finish today after a crazy weather weekend.

Olympic Sports: Paralympics are over. Final medal count.

Baseball:

  • Baseball is back! Season will begin on April 7th. There will also be an international draft starting in 2024 according to the new CBA.

Basketball-NCAAM:

  • It was conference championship week! The Power 5 conferences will be decided this week before Selection Sunday.
    • ACC – VTech had a huge upset over Duke to take the Championship! They were 7th in the conference vs #7 in the country…
    • Big 12 – After OU upset Baylor, it was a showdown between the next 2 best teams in the Big 12 for the title. Kansas beat Texas Tech 74-65.
    • Big Ten – Iowa took the title after beating Purdue in the final after taking down Rutgers and Indiana.
    • Pac 12 – This was one of the only no surprise championships. #1 Arizona beat #2 in the conference UCLA for the title.
    • SEC – Texas A&M had a great run making it all the way to the final after being 8th in the conference but ultimately lost to Tennessee in the final.
  • March Madness is here! Brackets are due before 11:15am CT on Thursday. 1st Four begins Tuesday.
    • First out 4: Dayton, Oklahoma, SMU and Texas A&M.

Basketball – NBA:

  • LeBron is the first player in NBA history to hit 10,000 in all 3 major stats: assists, rebounds and points. He hit the final 10k stat in assists on Sunday vs the Suns. The Suns kicked the Lakers’ ass 140-111. James currently has 36,824 points all time (3rd), 10,004 assists (7th) and 10,150 rebounds (39th). Sitting in the 2nd spot for total points is Karl Malone with 36,928 so LeBron could catch him this week!
  • The Celtics officially retired #5 in honor of Kevin Garnett. That was also the moment that he buried his animosity towards Ray Allen, who was also in attendance. Allen signed with the Heat which brought the 5 year run for the Celtics to an end.
  • KD dropped 53 points against the Knicks on Sunday but also dropped some shade. Kyrie Irving was allowed to enter Barclays arena this weekend but only as a fan. KD expressed his annoyance that unvaxed fans are allowed into the stadium but Irving still cant play.

Football:

  • Tom Brady is back! And I called it!! Before you get all bent out of shape, remember Michael Jordan retired 2xs and came back as did Brett Farve. News broke after the Bucs star was chatting with the ManU star, Christaino Ronaldo asked him if he was done and Brady’s response was not audible but his face said it was possible for a comeback. Brady said (on Insta) he has unfinished business. Tough timing for the guy who bought TB’s last TD ball for $518k, literally the day before the news broke. It wont be the last TD ball for long…

  • Contract extensions:
    • The Vikings have extended a deal with their QB Kirk Cousins valued at $35MM for one year. This will keep him in MN through the 2023 season.
    • The Cowboys have extended WR Michael Gallup’s deal for 5 year valued at $62.5MM. They did however let WR Amari Cooper move on so we will see how Gallup and Lamb pick up the slack.

Golf:

  • The Players had some serious weather issues so it will finish today. There will only be enough sunlight for a 3 hole playoff at this timing.

Olympic Sports:

  • The Paralympics have begun concluded.
    • The final medal count is:
      • CHN with 18 golds and 61 total
      • UKR finished 2nd with 11 golds and 29 total
      • CAN – 3rd with 8 golds and 25 total
      • USA finished 4th with 6 golds and 20 total
        • We were 5th in golds count behind FRA as well with 7.
        • USA’s 6 golds were:
          • Oksana Masters in the W Sitting Biathlon & Sprint Sitting Biathlon
          • Kendall Gretsch in W Middle Distance Sitting Biathlon
          • Brenna Huckaby in W Banked Slalom SB-LL2 Snowboarding
          • Mixed 4×2.5km Relay in Para CC Skiing
          • Para Ice Hockey

    • Oksana Masters was one of the big stars of the Paralympic games. The 32 yr old won 7 medals including 3 gold. This adds to her total of 16 career Paralympic medals in Summer and Winter games. Her 7 medals in Beijing 2022 is the most ever won in one single games by any Paralympian.
