Baseball: Last week of Spring Training. World Classic final.
Basketball-NBA: Ja back this week. Ball 3rd knee surgery. MJ selling CLT?
Basketball-NCAA: No perfect brackets left. Only 800 after just Day 1. Only 2 top 2 seeds left.
Football- NFL: Magic Johnson interested in Washington. Blockbuster changes with some big names.
Golf: LIV Tucson event and Valspar.
Olympic Sports: World Cup finale. Shiffrin wins over $1MM. NCAA W Gym FL Trinity so close to Perfect 10 record. Saunders banned. Iditarod legends.
Baseball:
- Spring training is wrapping up and opening day is next week (Thurs March 30th)!
- Team USA is in the final of the World Baseball Classic. USA put on a clinic against Cuba on Sunday winning 14-2 to go into the final to play the winner of tonight’s game (JPN and MEX). JPN and USA are no stranger to the final in this classic but Mexico is a first time final 4 team.
Basketball – NBA:
- Grizzlies Ja Morant suspended 8 games for detrimental behavior to the team. The team is hopeful he can rejoin the team on Wednesday vs Rockets.
- Bulls Lonzo Ball in for a 3rd knee surgery on Monday. He has undergone cartilage transplant surgery on his left knee. This should give him the best chance to play in the NBA moving forward.
- Michael Jordan is looking to sell his majority stake in the CLT Hornets. He paid $275MM for the stake in 2010. This sale would end his 13 year run as owner.
Basketball-NCAA:
- Well March Madness certainly lived up to its name. I know I personally went 0-3 to start. The first huge upset was #4 UVA losing to #13 Furman on a last minute steal. Furman hasn’t been to the tournament in 43 years and they upset UVA in round 1. That was not the biggest upset of day 1 though. #15 Princeton beat #2 Arizona for only the 11th time in history (2v15 matchup) but the 3rd year straight. Princeton hadn’t won a game since 1998. Late night day 1, 10 Penn St upset 7 Texas A&M. Fewer than 800 perfect brackets were left.
- After Day 2 there would be 0, mainly thanks to #16 Fairleigh Davidson beating #1 Purdue. That was only the second time ever a 16 seed took down a 1. 3rd ever to make Sweet 16. #8 Memphis lost to #9 FAU. So after round 1, we had no perfect brackets left (those were done in by Purdue’s loss) and a crazy 16v1 and 15v2 upset.
- Let round 2 commence! And it did. Game 1 was another upset by #13 Furman this time over #5 San Diego St. #8 Arkansas then upset defending champ #1 Kansas. Only 2 #1 seeds left! #15 Princeton continued to wreck shop this time beating #7 Mizzou. We then had a couple of games reprieve until #7 Michigan St took out #2 Marquette by 9. After that the upsets came rolling in. #3 Baylor lost to #6 Creighton by 9. FDU’s Cinderella story got cut short by FAU. #5 Miami took down basketball blue blood #4 Indiana. That leaves 4 top 2 seeds. Two 2s and two 1s.
- NBD I’m 3/4 out of my final four already gone.
Football – NFL:
- Magic Johnson is bidding on the Commanders. The group he is apart of (Harris group) failed to buy the Broncos last year. The Harris group also owns the NBA 76ers and NHL Devils.
- Siri queue up ‘Changes’ by David Bowie:
- Raiders signed QB Jimmy Garoppolo after letting Carr go to the saints.
- The Panthers get QB Anthony Dalton
- The Cowboys released RB Zeke Elliott
- Baker Mayfield is now in Tampa Bay. He has emphasized he is not Tom Brady but let’s ne honest we all knew that.
- The Jets are looking at Packers QB Aaron Rodgers but it is not official yet.
Golf:
- The LIV Tour event in Tucson had a 4 man playoff between AUS Danny Lee, RSA Louis Ooisthuizen, USA Brendan Steele and MEX Carlos Ortiz. Ortiz went out on the first hole with the a bogey and then there wasn’t a result til the 3rd time they went back to the 18th. Danny Lee birdied the 3rd time after hitting the flagstick and rolling in to took home the title and $4MM.
- Taylor Moore won the last tournament in the Florida swing the Valspar Championship by one over Adam Schenk who bogeyed the final hole. This was Moore’s first win. The Oklahoman went to Arkansas and tuned pro in 2016. Pretty good considering he’s only had 5 Top 10s in his career.
Olympic Sports:
- SLO Petra Vlhova won the last women’s slalom event of the World Cup season. Shiffrin placed 3rd. She’s not too sad though since she made the most on tour, making over $1MM in prize money this season. Marco Odermatt won this season’s World Cup overall title and did it in record fashion. He won with the most points ever, 2,042 point – a 23 year old record.
- We have just begun post season gymnastics and Florida’s Trinity Thomas is just 1 Perfect 10 away from the overall record in NCAA history of 28. She would tie UCLA’s Jaime Dantzscher and Kentucky’s Jenny Hansen. Trinity had two this past weekend at SEC Championships. The 26th was on bars, her first of the season. She is the reigning All-Around champion from last year.
- USA Silver medalist Raven Saunders has been banned for 18m from competition for falling to show up for a doping test. This is her 3rd failure to show in 1 year, thus the ban. You might remember this as Christian Coleman had the same issue and missed the Olympics for it. Saunders is lucky we are still 500 days out from Paris so she would be eligible to compete but not at Worlds.
- Ryan Redington won Iditarod. It was a family tradition as his grandpa and dad are in mushing HoF
