Baseball:

  • LA Angels Reid Detmers pitched a no-hitter on Tuesday night against the Rays. Detmers is only 22 years old when pitching the 2nd no-hitter this season. This is the Angels 12th no-hitter in franchise history. Normally (and as we saw earlier this season with Kershaw in April) pitch count becomes an issue but not for Detmers who only had 64 through 6 innings. He did finish with a career high of 108 pitches.

  • Brewers LF Christian Yelich hit his 3rd cycle in his career in the game against the Reds on Wednesday. He is just one of 5 MLB players to ever hit 3 cycles. All 3 cycles have been against the Reds (2 in 2018) – this is the first that all 3 were against the same team. The Pirates have had the most cycles ever hit at 24 and the Cardinals have had the most against them (also with 24). The score of the game on Wednesday was 14-11 with 25 runs is the highest scoring game of all season.
    • #GFHint: Hitting a cycle means you hit a single, double, triple and HR in the same game
  • Albert Pujols pithing?
  • Reds allowed no hits (although not considered a no hitter) but still lost to the Pirates 1-0.
  • Déjà vu… The Guardians/White Sox game got postponed on Wednesday.

Basketball-NBA:

  • Ok obviously these teams are evenly matched because we have even/split series so far people!
    • Warriors had a 4th quarter comeback on Monday to take Game 4. With Steph Curry scoring 14 points in the 4th quarter alone. He is now the first player to make 500 3-pointers in playoffs. The Golden State team put the series away during Game 6 winning 4-2.
    • The Heat also won their series in 6 games, beating the 76ers 4-2. Tuesday’s game was embarrassing with the Heat winning 120-85 and making a 12-0 run in the 4th to really put the game away.
    • The Celtics upset the Bucks in Game 7. After a great first quarter where the Bucks were leading 26-20, the Celtics took every quarter after that to win Game 7 109-81.
    • That wasn’t the only lopsided Game 7. The Mavs forced Game 7 after losing the first 2 games in the series. Mavericks led by as many as 46 points in Game 7 and never gave up the lead. This is the first time the Mavericks have made it to the conference finals since 2011 and 5th time all time. Suns are now the 2nd team in the NBA history to have more than 64 wins in a season (franchise record and 8 more wins than anyone else in the league) and not make the conference finals. CP3 lost more Game 7s than any other player.
  • Ja Morant has a bone bruise on his right knee and is likely out for the remainder of playoffs. And it turns out that yes playoffs for the Grizzlies are over.

Football:

  • It must be nice… Tom Brady signed a ridiculous 10 year $375MM deal with Fox Sports to be an analyst when he retires which as a reminder is NOT this season…
    • The back story here is FOX as been the most BA for NFL games in the game. That was until recently when ESPN stole Troy Aikman and Joe Buck, literally who was made famous by FOX.

Golf:

  • KH Lee repeats at the Byron Nelson. Last year he won with a final score of 25 under par and this year he bested that by one. He held off the late charge by hometown favorite Jordan Spieth. Lee gets a spot at this week’s major at Southern Hills in Tulsa at the PGA Championship. Only 3 golfers had taken multiple Byron titles: Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. Good company to be in Lee.

  • This week is the 2nd major of the year at the PGA Championship. It will be played at Southern Hills and you’ll see some familiar faces…

Hockey:

  • Playoffs have been awesome! 5 games in the first round went to Game 7. The Hurricanes, Lightning and Oilers are all won their Game 7 matchups on Saturday against the Bruins, Maple Leafs and Kings. On Sunday, the Rangers won in Game 7 in OT 4-3 over the Penguins. That was the trend of the evening. The Flames beat the Stars in Game 7 OT as well.

Horse Racing:

  • Rich Strike is skipping the Preakness so there will be no Triple Crown winner this year.

Motorsports:

  • MotoGP GOAT, Valentino Rossi’s number 46 will be retired at the race in Mugello in 2 weeks. This should not be a surprise to anyone and is fitting for the legend.

Olympic Sports:

  • GBR Swimmer Adam Peaty (3x Olympic gold medalist) is out of World Championships due to a fractured foot that he suffered at the gym this past week. World Championship’s are set to be competed in June in Budapest.
  • #1 OU lost in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament… however they are still the #1 seed for the post season. They will host a regional in Norman. Remember regionals are double elimination between 4 teams and only one team makes it out and onto Super Regionals. Softball post season is here! Regional rounds are this weekend.

Tennis:

  • Osaka is leaving IMG to start her own agency, EVOLVE. She is starting this with her agent from IMG as well. Osaka is 20th on the 2022 world list of highest paid athletes (1st among women) bringing in $53.2MM in prize money and endorsements.

  • Djokovic won his 1000th career match in the Italian Open semifinals. He has also been World #1 for 370 weeks.
