Baseball – MLB:
- This week in the MLB:
- Monday started off with a bang with 3 games going into extra innings. The Blue Jays upset the Orioles in 10 after Daulton Varsho’s stellar night. The LF hit a HR, robbed someone of a HR and then hit the go-ahead run in the 10th. The Mets looked to have their game in the bag leading the Phillies 4-2 going into the 9th but Bryson Stott hit one of the two runs needed in the 9th and then the sacrificial fly in the 10th that brought in the winning run. The Closer Edwin Diaz only allowed 3 HRs in the 2022 season (the last one he was healthy) and yet has given up 4 so far this year. Phillies get the win 5-4. The Dodgers won in 10 over the Giants, their CA rivals.
- The Astros got their 2nd win over the A’s on Tuesday although the game went to 10 innings. Bregman hit a double in the 4th which made him the first player in Astros history to go 5 straight at-bats. If that sounds familiar its because Aaron Judge did it last season. That streak ended in the 6th with a ground out. The Marlins upset the Tigers in a close one winning 1-0 in 10. They would shut them out again the next day too but this time in the normal 9 innings. Then the Rays/Red Sox went into 12 innings. The teams were tied in the 9th (obviously) but also got a run apiece in the 11th before the Red Sox finally settled it in the 12th.
-
- Phillies P Suarez is currently sitting on top of the league with an 8-0 record after Wednesday’s game against the Mets. The Phili team won 10-5. The Rangers did not have a good week. They lost their 5th straight game to the Guardians on Tuesday before breaking the streak with a shutout of the same team on Wednesday. Mainly thanks to a great start by P Jonathan Gray. They would end the week at exactly .500 on the season.
- In contrast the Rockies were on a 7-game win streak after sweeping the Rangers and then the Padres. They completed the feat on Thursday with a shutout 8-0 win. But the wins would end there. They would travel to the Giants and lost the next 3 straight games, being outscored 28-10. The Yankees swept the Twins completing the final game on Thursday with a 5-0 win and 8 shutout innings from P Clarke Schmidt. The Mets would avoid the home sweep by beating the Phillies 6-5 in 11 that same night. Reds SS Elly De la Cruz stole 4 bases in their 7-2 win on Thursday, the most ever against the Dodgers since 2009. He has 30 steals this season alone.
-
- The Astros completed the sweep of the A’s, despite the A’s having a better record. Then they would go on to beat the Brewers in a close one Friday. That makes it their 5th straight win, a season high for the Houston team. They would go on to lose the next game to the Brewers 5-4 in Saturday. Pirates P and rising star Skenes struck out 11 in 6 innings with no hits and gets his first win in the majors against the Cubs.
- Friday the Tigers kills the Diamondbacks – get the animal pun?! But seriously, the DET team shut out AZ and added 13 runs to that as well.
- The longest game of the week was the Angels/Rangers game that went into 13 innings on Saturday. For as long as it was the score was not high. To add insult to injury to losing that long of a game, it ended when the Angels P hit the Rangers batter to send him to first and walk in a run… that ended the game.
- Sunday, 33 HRs were scored by the teams in action that night. The Phillies and the Red Sox were the only ones to reach double digit runs with 11 a piece against their opponents, the Nationals and the Cardinals respectively.
- The Yankees ended the week with 7 straight wins including sweeps of the Twins and White Sox. We will have to wait and see this week how long they can keep this up! On the flip side of that, the Twins are now sitting at 6 loses after the week. They got outscored 33-9 in those games – Yikes! The A’s have also lost 8 in a row.
- Orioles SS Gunner Henderson now leads the MLB in HRs with 14 as of Saturday and he would get another Sunday. He and Astros Kyle Tucker are tied at 15 apiece after Tucker hit two on Sunday. Want to keep track?
- Astros P Ronel Blanco was ejected during Tuesday nights a game for the Houston team due to a foreign substance. He will be suspended for 10 games.
Baseball/Softball – NCAA:
- Regional results for softball. Regionals were a set of 4 schools where everyone played each other and it was double elimination. So if you got the end of the weekend and a team that hadn’t lost, lost on Sunday then they played a double header to determine the winner.
- #1. Texas was the first team to qualify, 2. Oklahoma, 3. Tennessee, 4. Florida, 5. Oklahoma State, 6. UCLA, 9. LSU, 10. Duke, 14. Alabama, 15. Florida State, 16. Texas A&M, South Carolina and Arizona have all made it to the Super Regional with no double game needed.
-
- #7. Mizzou lost to Omaha in extra innings (9) during the first day of Regionals. That put the Tigers in the losers bracket meaning they would have to win two on Sunday. They did exactly that. They won the first game 5-1 and the second was super close at 1-0 with both teams having 4-5 hits on the board.
- #8. Stanford looked to put it away on Sunday but they fell in Game 1 that day to Cal State Fullerton 8-1. But that was where Cal State’s luck ran out. Both teams had 6 hits in game 2 but Stanford got more batters around the bases and won 4-2.
-
- #11 Georgia got upset in Game 2 of the weekend to Liberty 7-3. That put the Flames in the drivers seat on Sunday. But Georgia showed why they are ranked #11 killing Liberty in Game 1 Sunday 14-5. Game 2 was much closer but the Dawgs barely squeaked the win out 3-2. Georgia escapes.
- #13 Louisiana got shutout by Baylor in 5 innings on Saturday, losing 8-0. Louisiana returned the favor on Sunday Game 1 though, winning 13-0 in 5. In an impressive upset, Baylor flipped the momentum in Game 2 winning a close one 4-3 despite having less hits in Game 2 to advance over the Ragin Cajuns.
-
- Other big headlines: #23 Miami (OH) led the nation in HRs then got shut out in 2 games in regionals. #12 Arkansas won their first game but then proceeded to lose their next two and not even make the final on Sunday. They were the highest ranked team to get upset. Auburn won one of their games in 12 innings – makes me tired just thinking about it. But has to win two Sunday just 12 hours later. They ended up losing to #15 Florida State 10-4.
- Super Regionals are a best of 3 game series before qualifying for the WCWS.
- Its conference tournament weekend for baseball.
Basketball – NBA:
- 2nd round of playoffs are done and the finals are set!
- The Thunder came back to tie the series at 2 games apiece on Monday. The Mavs opened the door for OKC in the 2H when they only put up 15 in the 3rd and then the Thunder put up 35 in the 4th to win a close one by 4. But The thunder had a bad game it’s their highest quarter score was 25 in Wednesdays game 5. They would lose that one by 12. Mavs are one win away. Mavs won game 6 and it could not have been much closer. The thunder were up by 16 at half ending the 1H with a 24-6 run but the Mavs came back in a big way 2H. Scoring 35 and 34 to win by 1.
- Mondays game the Celtics beat the Cavs to lead the series 3-1 and going back home to Boston. They would get it done easily in game 5 winning 113-98. The Celtics are the first team to advance to the conference finals and its their 3rd straight. The longest streak for the franchise since they did it 5xs in the 80s.
- The Knicks looked like they were going to steamroller the Pacers. They won Tuesdays game by 30 and led the series 3-2. But the Pacers got home and put on a show. Indiana tied it all up on Friday winning 116-103. Then the unthinkable happened for the Knicks. Their post season star Brunson was ruled out of Game 7 with a broken hand. And the result didn’t surprise me. The Pacers won convincingly 130-109. Indiana upsets NY and advances to the conference finals for the first time in 10 years.
- Brunson had at least 5 40 point games in the post season. The most since Lebron in 2018 (he did it with 8).
- The other series that needed all 7 games was the Timberwolves vs Nuggets. Tuesday the defending champs took the series lead 3-2 after winning 112-97. The Nuggets only scored 70 points total in game 6. Needless to say with a score like that, they lost. By a lot – 45! That’s how we ended up in game 7. The Nuggets came out hot in Game 7 and it looked like they would advance, up 15 at half. At one point, they were up 20 but a slow 3Q of just 13 points allowed the Wolves to come back. The Wolves won by 8 and are the final team to advance!
Football:
- The NFL announced their schedules this week. So you can check out your teams opponents and start your planning!
- The new EA NCAA College Football 25 video game release date has been announced as July 19th. It has been long anticipated as the last NCAAF game was back in 2014.
- The Chiefs K Harrison Butker comments during a graduation speech got him into ‘trouble’ this week.
Golf:
- The PGA Championship had so many headlines throughout the week. But Xander Schauffle came out hot, tying the course record of 62. That was nothing compared to Friday’s headline. You cant make this stuff up. Scottie Scheffler got arrested on Friday morning on his way to Vallahala. He was going around a fatal accident on the way into the course when he was stopped by cops but apparently kept going. The report and account are both iffy. From personal experience the credentialed instructions can be very confusing. But they flat out arrested him and he did his stretching routine in a jail cell. He did end up making his tee time as the fatal accident delayed the entire tournament. And he ended up shooting 65… talk about concentration. Saturday could not be a different story for Scheffler who shot a 73, his worst score in 266 days. That ends Scheffler’s 42 consecutive rounds par or better which went back to Aug 2023 at East Lake. He did end up finishing 8th.
- But it ended like it started, Xander Schauffle won his first major championship. Finally!!! He had to make a birdie on the final hole and par 5 but he managed it and that ball did a full 360! Final round 65. We say finally because of the 28 major championships that he has competed in, he has been top 10 13xs, top 5 6xs including 2 runner-up finishes. So happy for him! He’s been top 10 59xs in his career with 8 wins but never a major until yesterday.
Hockey:
- NHL Playoffs: Spoiler – no one swept and it took a while for any team to even advance. We didn’t have a single team advance in the NHL til Thursday. Finally the Rangers managed to put away the Hurricanes in game 6. But then teams started to get it done. Friday both teams with the lead won and advanced. That was the Stars over the Avalanche and the Panthers over the Bruins. In close games. Dallas went to double OT before a winner was decided. The Oilers tied up their series with the Canucks on Saturday so that series will be decided Monday.
Horseracing:
- Seize the Grey won the Preakness this past week which denied Mystik Dan the shot at the Triple Crown. Cant say we’re too surprised as Mystik Dan was a bit of a long shot anyway. Seize got the lead early and never relinquished it.
Olympic Sports:
- Simone Biles won the All Around at the Hydration Classic by 1.85 points over Shilese Jones. Biles won the floor and finished 2nd in the Beam and Uneven Bars. She also did the Biles II (a Yurchenko double pike) which got the highest score of the day on vault or any other apparatus with a 15.6. She did not get the vault title as she only vaulter once when its required to vault twice to be considered for the individual title. However, Gabby Douglas, the 2012 OLY champ, withdrew after one event. Getting ready for the games does not seem to be going her way. Jade Carey (who won gold in Tokyo on floor) won the vault. Jordan Chiles and Suni Lee were also in action. It was a star studded event to be sure with the 2012, 2016 and 2020 All-Around OLY champs in action.
- Another star-studded event was the LA GP! As we sit only 30 days away from Olympic trials. OLY champion Camancho-Quinn got DQ’d for a false start in the 100m hurdles. USA Rai Benjamin put out a statement in the 400h with a 46.6 after his BRA nemesis set the WL time just recently. Not anymore! Also making a statement, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone raced and won the 200m (not her normal event). She won it by over .2 seconds and it is rumored that she will race the 400h, but the 400m and now the 200m are on the table.
Some quick highlights:
- Manchester City won the EPL.
- Taylor Knibb qualified for the Paris Olympics in two different sports: the Triathlon and Road Cycling in the time trial event.
- WNBA season is officially on! And Caitlyn Clark got rocked losing her first game and then wiping out on this screen by Breanna Stewart.
- The WNBA is adding the Golden State Valkyries for the 2025 season.
- Iowa women’s HC announced that she is retiring.
