Tennis: French Open begins. Lots of American women and Medvedev out!

Baseball – MLB:

  • A’s have the worst record since 1900 through 53 games with only 10 wins. They are now 10-45. The Oakland team has lost 11 straight in a row (longest since 1995). They have also been swept for the 8th time so far this season. If they keep up this pace of losing they would finish 29-133 which would be the most losses in the modern era of baseball. That record is currently 1962 Mets at 40-120.
  • The Cubs upset Rays on Monday night with a one-hitter by Stroman. The Rays still lead the league with 39 wins. Although the Orioles aren’t too far behind with 35.
  • White Sox RP Liam Hendriks is back after being diagnosed and treated for non-Hodkins lymphoma. His first pitch was a strike.

Baseball/Softball – NCAA:

  • Softball: And then there were 8. WCWS is set but let’s go over what happened this weekend.
    • #1 Oklahoma tied the longest winning streak at 47 on Fridays win over Clemson. The Sooners tie the record with the 1996/97 Arizona team. With a win on Saturday, they would hold the record all their own. But the Tigers put up a fight. Game 2 started like normal for the OU team, 2 HRs in the first inning. Then we had some quick innings til the 4th when OU had another solo HR and a earned run to bring their score to 4 but Clemson answered with a 3-run HR to bring the game back to within 1. That began the come back. Clemson then had a hell of a 5th inning racking up 4 more runs on HRs and walks. We got down to the 7th inning, 2 on base, 2 outs and the Sooners and the streak were in trouble. That was until Hansen came up to bat and on a 0-2 count, HR to tie the game. We go to extra innings. It took til the 9th inning before OU had another HR and that was game. Even though OU hosted, they were the away team in game 2. OU now holds the NCAA longest win streak record alone.
    • Only 2 super regionals went to 3 games. #15 Utah vs San Diego St and Alabama vs Northwestern. San Diego St barely beat Utah late on Friday night before losing 10-1 on Saturday and 7-2 on Sunday. #12 Northwestern upset #5 Alabama 3-1 on Friday before the Crimson Tide came back 2-1 and 3-2 on the weekend.
    • All 8 teams to make the WCWS are ranked. #3 Florida St and #6 OSU were the first to punch their tickets winning in straight games on Friday. #9 Stanford has made their first WCWS since 2004. #4 Tennessee, #7 Washington also made it.

  • Baseball post season will begin this week. 10 sec teams made the post season which tied the record of most set in 2014. 8 will host which is a new record. ACC is next with 8. Big 12 had 6. Pac 12 has 5. Candy has the longest streak of 17 post seasons made. Texas has the record for most ever with 62 – a new record. Tulane went 19-40 this season but won the American Conference so they are officially the team with most losses ever to make the playoffs. Oral Roberts has 18 game win streak on the line. No debuts but Penn has had the longest drought they’re in for the first time since 1995.

Basketball – NBA:

  • Nuggets sweep the Lakers in just 4 games to go to their first NBA finals.
  • The Heat looked to do the same with Game 4 at home but the Celtics avoided sweep in dominant fashion, winning 116-99. They went off on three pointers shooting 40%. The Boston team then went on a run to try to do something that literally had never been done. Teams are 150-0 went being up 3-0. Game 5 was over by half with the Celtics being up 17. Game 6 was on Saturday and it was much closer but the Celtics won by 1 on a buzzer beater to take the series to a potentially historic game 7 on Monday night. But there is a reason why teams are 150-0…the Heat won 103-84 and Celtics star Tatum went out of the game with an ankle twist. The Heat is the first 8 seed to make Finals since 1999.
  • 76ers hire former Raptors HC Nurse. He is known for his defensive game and he took the Raptors from allowing the fewest steals while logging the most of a team since the stat started (mid 70s).

Football:

  • Cardinals have released WR DeAndre Hopkins, mainly due to salary cap issues. This release gives the team ~$8mm of wiggle room.
  • NFL is thinking about taking ball to 25 after fair catches (this is already a rule in college football).

Golf:

  • Harold Varner III won his first tournament on US soil after taking the LIV event in DC this weekend at Trump National. He won over Brendan Grace by 1 with a birdie on 18.

Hockey:

  • The Panthers swept the Hurricanes. The FL team scored with just 2.4 seconds left to take Game 4 and the sweep 4-3. This is their 2nd appearance in Stanley Cup final.
  • The Golden Knights looked to do the same thing to the Stars on Thursday in just 4 games but the Dallas team finally got one back in OT to start their comeback. So they avoid the sweep. They then won Game 5 in regulation. But that is where the comeback train stopped. Last night the Vegas team put the Stars to shame winning 6-0.
  • Stanley Cup finals are set: Panthers vs Golden Knights!

Olympic Sports:

  • Notre Dame won the Lacrosse national championship this weekend over Duke. This is their first lax championship.
  • Canada wins men’s hockey worlds over Germany 5-2. The USA and Latvia were in the bronze medal game that went into OT. Latvia came out victorious and parliament declared a national holiday since it was their best finish ever! Hockey is the nations top sport.

  • USA shot putter Ryan Crouser broke his own WR again on Saturday at the LA GP. The new mark is 23.56m (.37 previous).
  • World Aquatics may look to move their HQ to Hungary. Hungary has hosted worlds in 2017 and 2022 and will again in 2027.

Tennis:

  • The French Open began last week. #2 overall seed on the men’s side Medvedev lost in the first round and is out! No other huge upsets in Round 1. USA Coca Gauff, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys are all still in but so is POL and defending champ Swiatek. As are ESP Alcaraz and SRB Djokovic. There are 10 USA women (of 18) in the 2nd round and 5 USA men (of 16). There will be a new champ on the men’s side as Nadal is reigning French Open champ.
