Baseball – MLB:
- This week in the MLB:
- Orioles Gunnar Henderson became the youngest player in league history to hit 10 HRs before May 1 at 22 years old. His HR in the 1st was only 1 of 2 runs scored in the game as the Orioles defeated the Yankees. He was also responsible for the other score as well on an error. On Monday, the Nationals swept the Marlins who are the worst team in the NL. The Angels broke their 4 game losing streak on a wild pitch and error to beat the Phillies 6-5. There were a lot of 9th inning comebacks on Monday. The Cubs got a 2-run HR in the 9th to break a tie and beat the Mets. The Twins got their 8th win when a RBI single scored in the 9th over the White Sox. Mariners Garver got a HR in the 9th to beat the Braves.
-
- Three games went into extra winnings on Tuesday. The Guardians/Astros was a high scoring game. The Guardians came out swinging putting up 3 in the 1st but the Astros answered scoring 8 in the 3rd and 4th Cleveland tied it back up with a 5-run inning in the 6th and we remained tied through 9. CLE put up 1 in the 10th to take the lead but the Astros hit a 2-run HR to win it. The Rockies/Marlins game also went into 10 innings. The Rockies lost a 5-run lead and is the first team to trail in opening 29 games. Not a good start. The Marlins win in 10. The Dodgers Diamondbacks game was delayed for 2 hours for a bee swarm that had to be removed by a bee keeper. The Dbacks tied it up in the 8th before winning it in the 10th with 2 runs.
- Wednesday’s game between the Astros and Guardians ALSO went into 10 innings. But this time the Guardians won. The Braves are the better team by record but the Mariners had the sweep until Wednesday’s game when they won 5-2.
- The Rockies/Marlins game on Thursday also went into 10 innings again. Marlins Sanchez hit the walk off HR to end it. That win gives the MIA team had 9 hits compared to the Rockies 5. The Cubs and Mets did one better and went into 11 innings. The game was close and back and forth but Lindor’s double in the 11th was the nail in the coffin for the Cubs. Mets win 7-6.
-
- Astros Altuve joined an exclusive club of 300 career steals in their game against the Marlins in Friday. He is just the 5th player in MLB history to have 300 steals, 2k hits, 400 doubles, 200 HRs and a batting average of .300. The Dodgers needed Pages for their walk off win in the 11th over the Braves and both teams have 20 wins apiece.
-
- Over the weekend, the White Sox beat the Cardinals in 10 innings on an iffy 3rd strike call. The Pirates broke their 5-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Rockies. It was a close game as they only got that RBI in the final inning. Other than that, it was a highly offensive day! The A’s put up 20 runs against the Marlins on Saturday. Needless to say, they won. The Phillies put up 14 in their win over the Giants 14-3. The Rangers killed the Royals 15-4. The Padres scored 13 with Luis Arraez getting a record 4 hits in his debut for the San Diego team. Then to finish up Saturday, the Dodgers scored 11 against the Braves. Muncy got 3 HRs in that game.
- The Diamondbacks turned the tables on Sunday, beating the Padres 11-4. Two games went into 10 innings that day. The Rays got the W 7-6 over the Mets after a defensive play for the NY team went bad. The Rangers beat the Royals 3-2 in 10 as well. The Tigers/Yankees game was the opposite, it only went to 8 innings given a rain shortened game. The Yankees won 5-2 after a 3-run double by Juan Soto in the 7th.
-
- The Twins have won 12 straight games. Until Sunday, the Red Sox pulled off the upset with a 9-2 win that broke the streak. That streak had them climbing up the standings in the AL. They currently sit tied for 4th.
- Yankees star Aaron Judge was ejected for the first time in his career on Saturday. He made it 869 games before getting ejected. He got in an argument with the umpire after the 3rd strike was called in the 7th The Yankees did win 5-3 over the Tigers but that was overshadowed by the ejection.
- Julio Urias, ex-Dodgers P, was arrested in September for domestic violence and has pleaded no contest to a battery charge tied to that same arrest. He has 36 months of probation, 30 days of community labor and a full year of domestic violence counseling.
- Comcast stopped carrying Bally Sports on May 1 leaving MLB fans without a way to watch their local teams. Bally went into bankruptcy back in 2023 and managed to make a 6m contract with Comcast but that was it. They have managed to keep contracts with DirecTV and Charter. The teams whose rights sit with Bally are Twins, Cardinals, Braves, Tigers, Marlins, Guardians, Royals, Reds, Angels, Rangers, Rays and Brewers.
- The MLB Draft League has been extended through 2030 and is expanding by 2 teams, making the league 8 teams now. The league started in 2021 when the MiLB restructure happened.
Baseball/Softball – NCAA:
- Its Conference Championship week for Softball. The number of ranked teams in the Top 25 are next to the conferences.
Basketball – NBA:
- The Thunder only needed 4 games to beat the Pelicans and advance. They completed the sweep on Monday pulling away in the 4Q. They are the youngest team to win a playoff series in NBA history. They get a nice long break before playing the Mavs.
- The Nuggets/Lakers game was super close. Every Q was led by a different team. Ultimately the Nuggets completed the series in Game 5, advancing and knocking out LeBron from playoffs. TBD on his future if he will keep playing.
- The Celtics have finally started to lay it on the Heat. Monday’s game was a beat down with the BOS team winning 102-88. Point Guard Derrick White had a career high of 38 points in that game. That’s more than the Heat scored in any one Q. The Celtics just need one more game to advance, leading the series 3-1. They would get that game on Wednesday. And again it was an annihilation 118-84. Boston advances!
- Tuesday was a day of close games and no one advanced. The Bucks who are down some crucial players laid it down against the Pacers, beating them 115-92 to keep their season going. Pacers still lead the series 3-2. But on Thursday the Pacers flipped the tables. It was an easy game for the Indiana team winning by 22. It is an upset but with all the injuries the Bucks faced it doesn’t really feel like one.
- The 76ers/Knicks Game 5 on Monday was so close it went into OT. Top performers from both teams were over 40 points. Brunson has been on a hot streak and put up 40 points for NY. But Maxey, the PG for Phili, scored 46. He also scored or assisted on all 11 points in the final 1:32 of the game. The Knicks had a 6 point lead with under 30 seconds to go so you would think that was it. But the 76ers came up with the most clutch 3 pointers. The Knicks would put it away in Game 6 though by winning another close one by 3 points. Again Brunson scored 40+ and Embiid is out of playoffs.
- Speaking of close games, Game 5 for the Cavaliers/Magic was separated by 1 point. The Cavs came out hot scoring 33 compared to the Magic’s 23 but then they only put up 15 in the 1Q allowing Orlando to come back. The Cavs did manage to outlast the Magic to take the series lead 3-2. In Game 6 on Friday, the Magic came back in the 4Q to win and tie up the series despite Cavs SG Mitchell scoring 50 points. And just like that we have a winner take all Game 7 on Sunday. It was all Magic 1H. Orlando was up 10 at halftime. But after that the Cavs turned it on in 2H and more than made up for the difference. Their 18 point comeback was the largest in a Game 7 since 1998. Top player, Cavs Donovan Mitchell scored 39 and they become the final team to advance!
- The final series up for grabs was Mavericks/Clippers. Game 5 was all Mavs as they put up the most points in every single Q to win 123-93. Game 6 was closer but not too much closer. The Mavs win 114-101 with Kyrie scoring 30 points. Dallas advances.
- We did start one Semifinal matchup in the West. The Timberwolves vs the Nuggets played Game 1 on Saturday. The Nuggets had a better 1H, winning by 4 at halftime. But then the Timberwolves put up 33 in both 2Qs in the 2H. MIN wins by 7. Antony Edwards put up 43 points. They win the first game of the Semifinal round.
- Lakers fired HC Darvin Ham after just 2 seasons. His record with the team was 90-74 in the regular season but it’s the post season that was killer going 9-12. They did take the first in-season tournament title but it was not enough.
Football:
- UGA HC Kirby Smart just agreed to a 10-year contract with the university for $130MM. Money is guaranteed for the first half of the deal. Since 2017, the Dawgs have had 16 first round draft picks only eclipsed by Alabama.
- The Sexual assault charges against Dak Prescott were deemed to have insufficient evidence that an offense was committed.
- The Miami Dolphins have reached a deal with OBJ for one year worth $8.25MM.
Golf:
- We have a new winner on the PGA Tour. Taylor Pendrith won his first PGA Tour title at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson this weekend by one stroke. And it happened at the final hole. Ben Kohles was in the lead and had back-to-back birdies going into 18 but that was when disaster struck. None of his shots were on the fairway. His 2nd was in between two bunkers just 50-ish feet from the hole but his 3rd shot came out wonky and only went to the other side of one of the bunkers not even halving the distance. But he looked like he was going to salvage it and go into a playoff with a final 5 foot putt for par but he missed. Pendrith got the bridie he needed to win outright with a score of -23. The CAN Kent State golfer won on his 74th start on the PGA Tour.
- ENG amateur Kris Kim was playing on a sponsor exemption at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Dallas. He became the youngest player in the last 11 years to make a cut on the PGA Tour at the age of 16.
- Brooks Koepka secured his 4th victory on the LIV in Singapore. This was his first win with his son, Crew in attendance. He beat the field by 2 to beat Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith. The next tournament he will be competing in is the PGA Championship later this month.
Hockey:
- Panthers advanced in 5 games after destroying the Lightning 6-1 in the final game on Monday. The Hurricanes and Avalanche each won their series 4-1 on Tuesday.
- The Oilers put up 3 goals in 2P to finish off their series over the Kings. The Canucks scored in the final minutes of Game 6 to take their series over the Predators and advance.
- The Maple Leafs/Bruins game 5 went into OT after both teams didn’t score again after the 1P. But the Leafs got the win but they still trailed 3-2 in the series. The Leafs would tie up the series on Thursday. And then a winner take all game 7 also went into OT. Talk about a close series matchup! Again the teams only scored in one period and ended up in OT. The Bruins got the final say and advance!
- The Stars/Golden Knights series is tied 3-3 going into Sunday. Its been tied almost the entire time. Game 4 was a tie 2-2. The Stars also won game 5 to take the lead but then Vegas won Game 6 scoring 2 goals to Dallas’ zero. Game 7 lived up to the hype. The Stars scored early but the Golden Knights tied it up early in the 2P. It looked like we might be going into OT when Faksa scored the final goal with just 44 seconds left in the game and sent Dallas to the 2nd.
- The Hurricanes and Rangers started their round 2 match up last night. The Rangers came out hot scoring 3 in the 1st. That was enough to hang on.
Horseracing:
- The 150th running of the Kentucky Derby was on Saturday and it was one for the ages. The odds favorite, Fierceness, started in the front and was the favorite for a reason. Fierceness had the highest speed on the Breyer scale by the widest margin in over a decade. The race was tight with the horses coming around the final turn almost 5 wide. Mystik Dan took the lead off the corner but was fading at the finish line grew nearer with two horses, Forever Young and Sierra Leonne running him down. It was a photo finish and one of the closest finishes we have seen in a long time (since 1947 to be exact). It took minutes to get the official results.
Olympic Sports:
- 7X Olympic gold medalist, Katie Ledecky and Jim Thorpe were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom which is the highest civilian honor. Thorpe was awarded the medal posthumously as he was the first Native American to win a gold medal at the 1912 games when he won the Decathlon and Pentathlon. The Oklahoman died in 1953. A total of 19 people were awarded the medal including 3 posthumously.
- Emma Coburn broke her ankle and is out of the Paris Olympics. She broke her ankle at the Diamond League meet in China and will undergo surgery.
Some quick highlights:
- Dramatic close finishes were a thing this weekend. Kyle Larson in #5 car edged out Chris Buescher in the closest finish in NASCAR history. He won by .001 at the Kansas Speedway race.
- McLaren driver, Lando Norris, won the Miami GP upsetting Max Verstappen. Norris was positioned perfectly when the safety car came out around half way through. Then he just had the pace and was faster. This was Norris’ 110th start to get his first F1 victory. Verstappen did get 2nd with Leclerc in 3rd.
