Weekly Update – May 9, 2022

Weekly Update

Baseball: Mets take back 7 runs in the 9th. MLB scheduling on the other side of the pond.

Basketball-NBA: Evenly matched series all over. Jokic gets MVP. Green fined $25k.

Golf: Homa wins WF Championship.

Horse Racing: 2nd Longest odds ever at the Kentucky Derby.

Motorsports: F1’s debut Miami race.

Olympic Sports: CHN canceling events again…

Baseball:

  • The Mets had a crazy Thursday night. After being down 7-1 in the 9th inning, it looked to be a sorry evening. Unlike like the other 330x the Mets had trailed by 6 runs in the final inning, the Mets came back to score 7 runs and take the game. It all started with an infield single before Lindor sent the ball over the fence for the 2-run homer to begin the onslaught.
  • The MLB is planning to play regular season games in London in 2023, 2024 and 2026. The Yankees and Red Sox played there in 2019 but games have been canceled since 2020 for well obvious reasons. The MLB Home Run Derby will be at London’s Crystal Palace Park in July.

Basketball-NBA:

  • Ok obviously these teams are evenly matched because we have even/split series so far people!
    • The Suns and Heat took a 2-0 start before the Mavericks and 76ers both pulled back to even the series last night.
    • Ja Morant went off on Tuesday to even the Warriors/Grizzlies series. He scored 47 points in that game including the final 15 points.

    • The Bucks and the Warriors won on Saturday to make their series 2-1 over the Celtics and Grizzlies respectively. Although the Celtics were less than 1 second away from OT. The Grizzlies were not even close on Saturday, getting beat by 30.

  • Nuggets C Nikola Jokic has been voted NBA’s MVP for the 2nd year in a row. His stats from this year are even better than last year’s. He became the first player to have 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in one season.
  • Draymond Green was fined $25,000 for a gesture to Grizzlies fans earlier in the week. CP3 had words about that on Sunday when a fan was harassing his family who was in Dallas in attendance. The fan in question did get thrown out but still kinda ironic that we fine players for words and gestures but families were getting pushed…

Football:

  • MNF will see one of the best matchups from last season that came down to the wire with the Bills hosting the Titans on the 2nd week of the NFL season. That night will be a doubleheader with the Eagles vs Vikings game also playing but on ABC.

Golf:

  • Max Homa captured his 4th PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship this weekend which was held in the nation’s capital instead of CLT, NC. Quail Hollow is normally the WF course but since it will host the President’s Cup, TPC Potomac took on this tournament. Homa’s final round of -2 was enough to give him the 2 shot lead after a week of steady play. He is now one of 4 golfers to have multiple wins this season. #GFHint: Remember the PGA Tour season starts in September.

Horse Racing:

  • I hope you bet on the long shot this weekend at the Kentucky Derby. 80-1 Rich Strike, who only got into the Derby on Friday when Ethereal Road scratched won the Run for the Roses. The favorites, Epicenter and Zandon, were fighting at the front at what was a fast paced race when Rich Strike come back from behind. There was only one longer odds winner before and it was back in 1913 Donerail 91-1.

Motorsports:

  • Max Verstappen won Miami’s debut F1 race on Sunday. In a celeb studded event, the podium even got football helmets. Verstappen is reigning world champ but this year F1 made some changes to the rules on their cars so it’s a whole new ball game. Example? Lewis Hamilton got 6th and Ferrari finished 2nd and 3rd.

Olympic Sports:

  • Déjà vu anyone? COVID 19 restrictions are causing track meets to be canceled on the Diamond League calendar in China. POL luckily stepped in to host an additional event. The Asia Games, which were supposed to be held in Beijing, have also been postponed.
