Weekly Update November 13, 2023

Weekly Update

Basketball: NBA Headlines. #1 and #2 upset in week 1 of women’s hoops. Upsets in Top 25 NCAAM.

Football – NCAAF: 6 Top 25 losses. Other headlines Harbaugh is not dead although you might think so by the interview. Two SEC coaches fired.

Football – NFL: Updates from this week. Most walk-off FGs in NFL history. Traylor fever!

Golf: Villegas wins Bermuda. LIV trades.

Olympic Sports: Shiffrin’s first win of WC season. Utah Gym coach sus.

Soccer: NWSL Champs. Rapinoe retires.

Basketball:

  • Some headlines in the NBA: We are only max 10 games in and already we have no undefeated teams left in the league and no winless teams. We do have some home warriors though aka meaning they are undefeated at home: (W) Nuggets, Timberwolves, Lakers, (E) 76ers and Celtics. The Grizzlies are winless at home and the Rockets and Clippers are winless away. To build off of that, the Clippers are also 0-4 with James Harden. SO much for him being the fix they needed. Nuggets Nikola Jokic has now had 2 straight games with 35 points in DEN’s win over the Warriors 108-105. 76ers star Tyrese Maxey put up his first 50 point game against Pacers, which makes him the youngest Phili player to do so since 1997.

  • Sticking with the 76ers, F Kelly Oubre Jr was hit by a car when he was walking home early Saturday evening. He was crossing the street when the car hit him in the ribs, breaking one and causing injures to his hip and right leg. He is expected to miss the rest of the month. The car fled the scene.

  • Usually CFB is crazy but I guess hoops didn’t want to be ignored. On the women’s side, both #1 LSU and #2 UConn have lost already in the first week.

  • On the men’s side, #4 Michigan St lost day 1 to unranked JMU in OT. Starting season with a bang! During the weekend, #12 Arizona beat #2 Duke 78-73 and #17 San Diego St fell to BYU.

Football – NCAAF:

  • Top 25 Losses: We had 6.
    • #2 Georgia got TE Brock Bowers back and it showed with the Dawgs scoring double digits every Q. #9 Ole Miss didn’t get into the endzone in the 2H. Georgia looked like #1 in the country just saying with a route Ole Miss 52-17
    • #10 Penn St put up a good fight but was frankly outclassed by #3 Michigan, even without Harbaugh on the sidelines. They did get the first 1st & goal that Michigan has faced all year. Michigan couldn’t get anything done through the air so they ran and ran the ball all over the Nittany Lions. Wolverines stay undefeated winning by 9.

    • I knew the wrong side was favored in this game but even I didn’t see this score coming. #13 Tennessee lost to #14 Mizzou 36-7.

  • Other major storylines:
    • #19 LSU rolled over Florida who is now 5-5. QB Jayden Daniels had a Heisman trophy worthy performance. He is the first player in FBS history to have 350 pass and 200 rush in a single game! He had over 600 yards total and 5 TDs.
    • The #22 Iowa vs Rutgers game was the lowest Over/Under at 27.5 since 2000. And it hit! Iowa wins 22-0.

  • Close calls in the Top 25:
    • #4 Florida State played their rivals Miami this weekend and it was closer than it realistically should’ve been for #4 facing an unranked team but again it is a rivalry game. It was tied at 10 at half but with the return of Keon Coleman, the Noles would not be stopped. FSU wins by a TD.
    • #7 Texas escapes again. I feel like I say that ever week. Even with Quinn Ewers back, the Texas team got out to a hot start but let TCU come back. The Horned frogs scored 20 points in the 4Q to mount their comeback but would be a FG short.
    • #11 Louisville had to score 17 points in the final Q to beat 2-8 UVA. But they manage it to win by a TD. They are likely in ACC championship game now with just one more win needed. Then they would play FSU.

    • #21 Arizona didn’t lead until their game winning FG as time expired. But they beat Colorado who is now 4-6 and unlikely to make a bowl game at this point as their final 2 opponents are Washington St and Utah.
    • We all know #24 UNC and Duke hate each other on the bball court but this year it was a great game on the football field as well. With a prolific 4Q where 39 points were scored, we went into OT tied at 36. OT both teams scored a TD and we move onto 2OT. UNC gets their TD and 2-point conversion. Duke gets their TD but fails on the 2-point. UNC escapes.

    • Some not close calls: #6 Oregon handed USC their 4th loss of the season. The score looked better than the game was as USC backdoor covers, only losing by 9. 13 of those points came in garbage time though. #8 Alabama put up 21 points in the 1Q and it was 28-7 at half against Kentucky. The Wildcats never really had a chance as the Tide seems to have found it’s stride. That is dangerous for every other team. #17 Oklahoma and #25 K St killed their respective opponents winning by 30+.
    • Illinois vs Indiana was a crazy fun game that went into OT. While the Fighting Illini got the best of the Hoosiers, this game was the most points scored in a Big 10 game in the last 10 years with 93.

  • Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh was not on the sidelines for their biggest game of the season so far in Happy Valley this weekend. That’s because the Big 10 sanctioned the school (not Harbaugh) for the sign stealing scandal. In their release, the conference did say that this is a punishment for the school not the coach as they do not have evidence that Harbaugh knew about all of this but since he is the head of the team, he is not allowed on the sidelines for the remaining 3 games of regular season. Yep that also means he will miss the Ohio St game to end the season as well. He can however be at practice and everything else. He has not died. I only say that because the Interim HC Sherrone Moore sobbed (and cursed multiple times) on camera to a reporter post game on the field. A little over dramatic.

  • Firings: Texas A&M might’ve won this weekend against Miss St 51-10 but that didn’t stop the Aggies from firing their HC Jimbo Fisher. It has been in the rumor mill for a while and it has come to fruition. This is historic as Jimbo had a record guaranteed deal. His buyout after 6 years with the team is still $77MM. Also the Miss St HC Zach Arnett has also been fired. He took over the team when Mike Leach passed away but has had little success. Boise St fired their HC and San Diego St’s HC is retiring. Let the coaching carousel begin!
  • College GameDay will be at James Madison this next week while they take on App St at 1pm on ESPN+.

Football – NFL:

  • This week in the NFL: It was a record setting week with 9 close games. There were 5 games decided by game winning FGs, the most in NFL history.
    • Our walk-off FG games: The Texans scored 10 points in the final 3Qs to win over the hot Bengals team. And for the first time in a while, the Houston team is over .500. Arizona got QB Kyler Murray back for the first time in almost a year and it showed. The 1-8 team went on to kick a game-winning FG after Murray had one of his signature runs to put them in range. The beat the Falcons for their 2nd win of the season. The Lions/Chargers game was a high scoring one with the Chargers leading at half. The Lions mounted the comeback and ended with a 41 yard FG to win. The Seahawks are having a bounce-back season as they win over the Commanders with a 43 yard FG to win by 3. The Ravens started off hot outscoring the Browns 17-3 in 1Q. But you guessed it, the Browns would comeback scoring 16 in 4Q and won on a walkoff 41 yard FG.

    • TNF had a showdown in the bottom of the league between the Bears and Panthers. But the NC team cannot catch a break. CHI wins by 3. The Colts vs Patriots game in GER only had one TD scored the entire game and it was in 1Q. The Patriots never managed to score one. Colts win by a FG. The Vikings scored 21 points in the 2Q alone and would go on to win by 8 over the Saints. There was a fight after an INT when the Steelers beat the Packers by 4. Fists were flying and flags were thrown but it was eventually broken up.

    • The not so close games: The 49ers snapped their 3-game losing streak with an impressive 34-3 win over the Jags. The Bucs beat the Titans 20-6 who are struggling on the road, currently 0-5. The Cowboys crushed the Giants 49-17, which means through two games against the NY team this season, the Cowboys are 89-17.

  • The Chiefs were off but Traylor was not. Travis Kelce was in attendance at the TSwift concert in ARG as Taylor Swift began the abroad part of her tour. He was looking all cute and bashful when she changed her song lyrics in ‘Karma’ for him, The lyric is supposed to be karma is the guy on the screen coming straight home to me, changed to guy on the chiefs… They also shared a kiss – the first one caught on camera post the concert. So do we still think it’s just for NFL propaganda?

Golf:

  • SWE Alex Noren might’ve started the day with the lead, going 48 straight holes without a bogey but then he made back-to-back bogeys and never recovered. That allowed COL Camilo Villegas to swoop in and get his first PGA Tour title since 2014. Not only was it his first since 2014 but it comes just years after the death of his 22-month old daughter from brain cancer. Mia died in 2020 but the Villegas had a son in December. Needless to say it has been a roller coaster. He was runner up last week so if you thought the name sounded familiar, that’s prob why. Overall this is the 41 year old’s 5th PGA Tour title.
  • LIV has announced that they will have transfer windows and allow in-season trades. Players are allowed to change teams and some already have as the offseason trades move on. Only the top 24 players in the individual points race are guaranteed in the league for the next season. After free agency opens, the teams can go after any of the Top 24 that didn’t resign with their current teams or any golfer ranked 25-44. For more details see the full article.

Olympic Sports:

  • Mikaela Shiffrin gets her first WC title of the season on Sunday in the slalom. This was after SLO Petra Vlhova looked to have another victory in hand after run 1 but didn’t finish run 2 after failing to clear a gate. This is Shiffrin’s 89th WC title and 54th Slalom title. She will continue to extend her record in the most number of titles ever this season. In contrast, the Matterhorn WC races were cancelled due to weather.

  • Utah has placed Gymnastics HC Tom Farden on leave after 2 former gymnasts accused the program of abuse. He was not specifically named in either accusation but he has been the co or sole HC since both gymnasts were in action.

Soccer:

  • The NWSL season is officially over and NJ/NY Gotham are first time champions. They won the title game this weekend over OL Reign on Saturday 2-1.
  • Megan Rapinoe has officially retired.
