Weekly Update – November 14, 2022

Weekly Update

Baseball-MLB: Babe Ruth glove sets records.

Basketball-NBA: Embiid’s career day. Nets hire HC.

Football-NCAAF: 8 losses in the top 25 including some big upsets with CFP consequences.

Football-NFL: 7 close games including 2 in OT.

Golf: Finau cruises to victory in Houston. Woods’ December looks busy!

Olympic Sports: Iranian archer causes controversy. Marathon trials for 2024 set.

Baseball:

  • We have another record at auction. This time for Babe Ruth’s baseball glove which has sold for $1.53MM. The previous record was $387k for a Lou Gehrig glove. This one though was donated by Babe Ruth to St. Louis Browns 3B Jimmy Austin. It was made my Spalding circa 1927-1933.

Basketball:

  • Well the Nets didn’t lose anytime in hiring their new HC. Jacque Vaughn has been announced to lead the team through the 2023/2024 season. You might recognize the name although it’s a surprising hire because he was operating as the interim after the team fired Nash. The organization was rumored to be leaning towards Ime Udoka but thought that the Kyrie Irving controversy adding that with the former Celtics coach controversy was too much. In the first game under the new official HC, the Nets beat the Knicks 112-85 for their 3rd win in 4 games.

  • 76ers C Joel Embiid had a career high of 59 points in their game against the Jazz on Sunday. This put him as the first player to outscore both teams in the 4Q since 2006. He also had 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 7 blocks in the game. He is the first player to hit 50 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks since that very specific stat has been recorded (since 1973).

Football-NCAA:

  • Week 11
    • In a game that went back and forth and back and forth, #6 Oregon slipped (literally) at the end of the game to lose to #24 Washington. Oregon’s hope for the CFP are now done.
    • #7 LSU escapes a let down game beating Arkansas by only 3.
      • But it is enough to secure their spot in the SEC Championship game, repping the West. They will play Georgia.
    • We also had a close one in Mississippi. With rivals #11 Ole Miss and #9 Alabama tied at the beginning of the 4Q. It came down to the final minute but Bama comes up big with the stop to win by 6. Before this game, Bama was tied for the most amount of penalties/game.
    • Arizona snapped an 8 game road losing streak against ranked teams beating #12 UCLA. Huge upset by the Wildcats.
    • #14 Penn St shut out the Terps (aka Maryland) 30-0.

    • Wake Forest and #15 UNC came down to the wire as expected but the Tar Heels scored the only points in the 4Q with a FG to seal the win. Bad news for the over though.
      • ACC title game will be Clemson vs UNC.
    • Boston College had not beaten a ranked opponent in 25 games… until Saturday where they scored the game winning TD with 14 seconds left to beat the #16 Wolfpack. There were 7 turnovers but they were pretty evenly split. BC ended the game with -1 rushing so everything was done through the air to beat NC St.
    • In the battle for the American #22 UCF looked to have #17 Tulane handled but the green wave fought back but was a TD shy.

    • There was a huge match up in the Big 12 between #4 TCU and #18 Texas, which was GameDay this week. Both teams are known for scoring TDs but we didn’t have any until 20m left in the game. It was 3-0 at half – first time UT hasn’t scored a TD in the 1H at home since 1997. TCU went up 17-3 before a fumble let the Longhorns in the game a little bit (people actually came back into the stands). Still came up short by 7. Texas’ Big 12 championship hopes died almost as hard as the Over bet in this game.
      • TCU clinched their Big 12 title game berth with this win. TBD on who they will play
    • #20 Notre Dame had a down week after their huge upset last week but escapes Navy by 3.
    • #21 Illinois is in a slide. For being the 1 defense in the country, they let Purdue score 31 points and lost 2 weeks in a row. Purdue is now tied for lead in Big 10 West.

    • And finally Vanderbilt gets their first sec win since 2019 (26 games), Vanderbilt beat #24 Kentucky by 3.
    • Ohio St, Michigan, Tennessee, Utah and Florida St were all not challenged in their games. Like by 30 points or more not bothered.

  • Former UVA football player is a suspect in the killing of 3 other football players and wounding two others on campus late Sunday. The students were returning from a play they had seen when the former football player opened fire. The 3 killed were WR Lavel Davis Jr, WR Devin Chandler and LB D’Sean Perry. Our hearts go out to their families!

Football – NFL:

Golf:

  • Tony Finau cruised to his 5th PGA Tour win at the Cadence Houston Open this weekend. He was tied for the lead after Day 1 with a 65 and tied his career low of 62 in Round 2 to take the stand-alone lead. He never gave it back. Going into the final round, he was 4 shots clear of the next guy and that grew to 8 shots at one point on the back nine. He won by 4 even with the crazy weather that hit Houston this weekend. Finau has won 4xs in the last 30 tournaments; quite a turnaround from the start of his career where it took 185 to get his first win.
  • Tiger Woods has announced that he will return to play the Hero World Challenge in December. He hasn’t played since missing the cut at the 150th Open at Saint Andrews. But he will be on the tee on December 1. This tournament is only a 20 man field and is considered Tiger’s tournament (he plays host) in Nassau. Tiger will also play in the Match which I highlighted last week. That will be only 9 days after the start of the Hero. We could also see him a week after that in the PNC Championship (with his son) but TBD.

Olympic Sports:

  • As Iranian archer has had her medal ceremony in Tehran blown up. In the video, Ghasemi’s headscarf appears to drop, which was considered a supportive gesture for the nationwide protests of human right after 22 year old Mahsa Amini died in custody. She was detained due to being ‘inappropriately attired.’ Ghasemi publicly apologized but we have seen forced apologies and confessions before. In the video, she also moves her head away from another competitor that tried to help her with the falling scarf. So who is to know which one is true. Last month an IRN climber competed with out a headscarf to later apologize as well.
  • US marathon trials for the Paris 2024 Olympics will be held in Orlando. The top 3 women and women from this event will compete in Paris.
