Weekly Update – November 21, 2022

Weekly Update

Baseball: Female baseball played in D1.

Basketball: Nets got the whole team back together. UVA find success after tragedy. Trainer arrested for rape.

Football-NCAAF: 8 losses in the Top 25 including some big upsets! TN Hooker out with torn ACL.

Football-NFL: 7 close games.

Golf: Svensson wins first PGA Tour title.

Olympic Sports: Shiffrin is back to dominating. Suni done at Auburn. USA > CAN in hockey.

Soccer: World Cup begins! First USA game ends in a tie.

Baseball:

  • *Glass Ceiling Shatters* The first female athlete has been named to a D1 baseball roster. Olivia Pichardo is currently a freshman on the Brown baseball team. According to Baseball for All, 20 women have played collegiate baseball but not at the D1 level, until now. She will be a fill-in for infield and outfield. She has played on the USA Baseball’s women’s national team as a pitcher (RHP) and outfielder as well as spending time with the Mets in their amateur scouting dept.

Basketball:

  • Nets G Kyrie Irving returned to the court Sunday night after serving an 8-game suspension. He only played 26 minutes of the game against the Grizzlies. This game was also just the 7th time that KD, Irving and Ben Simmons have all been able to play together and it showed. The Nets won 127-115.

  • In their first game back after the tragic shooting for the 3 football players, #16 UVA upset #5 Baylor and then had to beat another ranked team in #19 Illinois on Sunday. The Cavaliers are currently undefeated.
  • A prominent basketball trainer has been arrested on a rape charge. The trainer in question previously worked with KD, Steph Curry and other NBA players. He was arrested in RI for rape and drugging for intercourse.

Football-NCAA:

  • Week 12

    • #3 Michigan and #4 TCU had scares that they escaped with game winning FGs. The horned frogs literally ran on the field to kick theirs. It was epic!
    • #5 Tennessee got the pants beat off of them by South Carolina who scored 6 TDs through the air by QB spencer rattler who only had 8 coming into the game. Gamecocks win 63-38.
    • #6 USC got 4 turnovers and only beat #16 UCLA by a FG. but they got the W and Trojan playoff hopes are still alive.
    • #9 Clemson had 6 turnovers and still won by 30 over Miami.
    • After losing last week, #12 Oregon had a nice bounce back win against #10 Utah. The Ducks get the final word scoring a FG to win.

    • And man was I wrong about this game! #14 Ole Miss went to Fayetteville and lost badly to unranked Arkansas. It was 42-6 before garbage time. The final score made it not look so bad 42-27 but Ole Miss scored 21 points in the 4Q after Arkansas stopped trying.
      • #GFHint: Garbage time is when the other team is clearly ahead and stops trying. So in this example, Arkansas was up 42-6 in the 4Q. Arkansas likely took their best players off the field and at least took their foot off the gas. That is when Ole Miss scored their 21 points, thus in garbage time.
    • #17 UNC looked to continue their Heisman bid, putting up 17 points by the half against Georgia Tech. But the Yellow Jackets came back to win scoring 21 unanswered points.
    • #18 Notre dame is 40-7 against ACC opponents including a 44-0 win this weekend against Boston College.

    • #20 UCF lost by a FG to Navy. Navy was 3-7 coming into this game so this is a bad loss.
    • In Bedlam, unranked Oklahoma started off hot with 28 points in the first Q but then didn’t score again. Luckily for the sooners, it was enough to beat #22 Oklahoma St 28-13.
    • #24 NC St should not have been ranked and they showed that again this week. This time losing to Louisville 25-10.
    • Vanderbilt gets another Sec win beating Florida!
    • Purdue had a TD called back during a pick 6 for early celebration. Shame!

  • Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker who has been responsible for so many amazing plays, is done for the season with a torn ACL. It wouldn’t have changed the result of the loss this weekend but it’s heartbreaking to see as he was going to go pro at the end of this year and this will undoubtedly hurt his draft stock.

Football – NFL:

Golf:

  • The RSM Classic saw a new winner on the PGA Tour, Adam Svensson. Svensson had only won on the Korn Ferry tour prior to Sunday. The Canadian turned pro in 2015 but has been on and off the PGA Tour totaling 70 starts on the top tour. Finally winning at the RSM Classic by 2 this weekend brought home winnings of $1.5MM.

Olympic Sports:

  • World Cup skiing is back! And Mikaela Shiffrin did not take long to assert her dominance, sweeping the 2 slalom races. That made her the skier to win the most titles in a single event. This was also Shiffrin’s 68th podium in the slalom discipline, the most ever by a woman, surpassing fellow American Lindsey Vonn with her downhill titles.
  • Reigning All Around gold medalist Suni Lee will not be returning for another season of gymnastics for Auburn. She is opting to focus on Olympic gymnastics instead.
  • USA beat CAN in women’s hockey for the 3rd straight win in the Rivalry series. Too bad this one wasn’t for the gold medal.

Soccer:

  • Team USA played their first game in a World Cup since 2014 today. The team tied Wales 1-1. Team USA scored first in the 36th minute and dominated the first half. But Wales came back to even the score off a nicely placed penalty kick and the UK team dominated the second half. So American fans may have hated the result today but it’s not as bad as you might think. Every time the USA has avoided defeat, we have moved out of the Group stage and onto the tournament.
    • The first game of the whole world cup was QTR vs ECU where the host lost 0-2. This si the first host to lose their debut ever.
    • The other game played in Group B (our group) was ENG vs IRN. No surprise ENG put the beat down on IRN winning 6-2.
