Baseball-MLB: Pujols ends at 703. Judge gets 62. Wild Card results and playoffs are set. La Russa out for heart issues.
Basketball-NBA: Season begins next week!
Football-NCAAF: 6 losses in the Top 25 and some close games. Walker being accused of paying for abortion in Senate race.
Football-NFL: 10 close games this week! Eagles still undefeated. Texans finally get a W. Matt Rhule fired. Dolphins lose another QB to concussion protocol. Brady and Gisele splitting?
Golf: Tom Kim wins 2nd PGA Tour title. DJ wins LIV individual.
Hockey: Season starts this week! Cole suspended.
Olympic Sports: Redmond’s dad passes. GBR Sprinter banned.
Soccer: USWNT rampant sexual abuse allegations and cover ups. Largest attendance for International friendly.
Baseball:
- HR news: Pujols hit HR #703 on Monday but the Cardinals are out of the playoffs so that is it! What an amazing career. Aaron Judge though is not done and he did finally got passed 61. In the 2nd game in the double header in Texas on Tuesday in the 1st inning, his first at-bat. So now Aaron Judge has the American League single-season HR record. The overall record was set by Barry Bonds in 2001 with 73. Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire are also ahead of Judge. Most people think those shouldn’t be counted due to that all 6 were set by the 3 men who admittedly used steroids.
- Wild card games were this weekend and ¾ were decided in straight games (that is not a term but it makes sense).
- Guardians beat the Rays in close low scoring games 2-1 and 1-0.
- In the other AL Wild card, the Mariners put away the Blue Jays in 2 games. Mariners beat the Blue Jays in Game 1 4-0 despite both teams having 7 hits. The 2nd game was much closer with the Seattle team winning 10-9, after coming back from a 7 run deficit.
- Phillies made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years and are now onto the Division round after beating the Cardinals. They won the first game 6-3 and then 2-0.
-
- But in the biggest shock of the weekend of wild cards, the Mets have been eliminated by the Padres. The Mets were the only wild card team with 100 wins but holding true to it’s name, the games were wild and the Padres won in an exciting Game 3. The Padres came out swinging in game 1 winning 7-1 but the Mets came back 7-3 on Saturday to force a game 3. Game 3 was not a competition though with the San Diego team winning 6-0.
- The main stay playoffs are set now!
- White Sox manager Tony La Russa steps down for heart issue. He was the manager of the team for 2 years which did not live up to expectations, especially as La Russa made his Hall of Fame career for the Chicago team. He was a 3x World Series champion.
Basketball:
- Season begins next week so we are wrapping up the preseason this week.
Football-NCAA:
- Week 6: 6 losses in the Top 25
-
- 18. UCLA remained undefeated beating 11. Utah by 10. Would’ve been worse for the Utes if it hadn’t been for the pick 6 in the final 6 minutes of the game.
- 13. Kentucky continues the spiral losing to South Carolina by 10 as well. This is the first road W for the Gamecocks in over a year.
- Notre Dame is looking better after winning against 16. BYU by 8 (the Fighting Irish did get a safety in 2Q).
-
- 19. Kansas’ QB goes out in the 1H and the Jayhawks take their first loss of the season to 17. TCU. 31-38. After a slow first half, both teams scored 21 points in the 3Q each!
- Arizona state is currently operating with an interim coach after firing Herm Edwards. Herm would’ve been proud this weekend though as the Sun Devils knocked off 21. Washington 45-38.
-
- 25. LSU got destroyed by 8. Tennessee 40-13. This is a nice W for the Vols as they will get gameday this weekend for their game vs Bama.
-
- Close games:
- 2. Alabama was 1 play from getting beat by unranked Texas A&M who was looking to score the game winning TD on the 3 yard line but came up short.
- 14. NC St was trailing Florida St 17-3 before scoring 16 unanswered points coming back to win 19-17.
- 20. K St was only favored by 1.5 but the Wildcats didn’t cover winning by just 1 in a low scoring game 10-9.
- 24. Cincinnati held on to win against a 1 win South Florida team by just 4.
- Close games:
- GameDay is headed back to Knoxville, TN for the match up between the Vols and Alabama. Alabama falls from #1 in the ranking to 3 after the almost loss to Texas A&M. James Madison is ranked for the first time ever and Illinois snuck into the rankings for the first time since 2011!
- Herschel Walker has been accused of paying for an abortion despite being very anti-abortion now in Senate race in GA. I don’t usually get political but Walker is a well-known college football star trying to make his way into the political scene. His seat could make a huge difference in what party controls the Senate majority.
Football – NFL:
- Week 5: 10 games were determined by a TD or less.
- This crazy week began with the Colts Broncos game on Thursday going into OT and culminating in a Colts win 12-9 after multiple injuries.
-
- The Texans got their first win of the season over the Jags with a TD in the 4th.
- The Giants shut down Aaron Rodgers and the Packers in the red zone on 4th down with 65 seconds to go in the game.
- The Bills allowed only 3 points against the very injured Steelers.
- The Chargers kick a FG for the only points in the 4th Q and it was enough to beat the Browns. I don’t usually mention shutouts but this one was so impressive.
- The Patriots and their rookie 3rd string QB Billy Zappe beat the Lions 29-0.
- The defending Super Bowl champs are struggling losing to the Cowboys this weekend to become 2-3 for the season.
-
- Phili fans breathed a sigh of relief after the Cardinals missed the game-tying FG. They are still undefeated!
- In contrast to that, the Ravens nailed their game winning FG over the Bengals
- Panthers have fired HC Matt Rhule after starting the season 1-4 and total 11-27. Rhule was only 2 years and 5 games into his 7-year contract and this comes after the owner said it could take 5-6 years to rebuild this team. Clearly Rhule didn’t get that.
- The Dolphins cannot catch a break with their 2nd QB put in concussion protocol for the 2nd week in a row. Teddy Bridgewater was hit during this play, passed the locker room concussion exam but then stayed out after new ‘ataxia’ rules dictate that if a player shows physical effects that could be due to a concussion that they are to be ruled out. This includes a stumble, off balance movements, etc.
- Tom Brady and Gisele have both gotten divorce lawyers. I guess when he retired and was supposed to be done then came back, although Bucs fans were happy, not everyone was.
Golf:
- Tom Kim has become just the 3rd player since 1974 to win a stroke play event without carding a bogey this weekend at the Shriners Children’s Open. He is also the first player on the PGA Tour since Tiger to win 2 tournaments before turning 21. Patrick Cantlay and Tom Kim were tied on the final hole of the tournament and no one wants to play Patty Ice in that situation. But Patty Ice cant always be and the 18th got him that day. Cantlay hooked his shot off the tee into a bush then took a penalty drop after he couldn’t hack it out. He then hit his next shot into the water and finally made a 35-foot putt for triple bogey. It was a mess but Kim pared the hole to take his 2nd PGA title in his rookie season.
- There was also a LIV Golf event this weekend in Bangkok and although Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra won the tournament by 3 shots, Dustin Johnson comes away the big winner. DJ has already locked up the LIV Golf individual championship 2 events before the finish. That also means he has earned $12.758MM for just playing 6 events over the last 4 months and then add the ultimate prize of $18MM on top of that = $30MM year with 2 events to go!
Hockey:
- Season starts this week Tuesday 10/11th.
- Lightning has suspended defensemen Ian Cole for sexual abuse allegations that are now under investigation. Supposedly he sexually abused a minor ‘grooming her for four years’ according to the social media post where the news dropped. Cole is now under investigation. Bad timing as the team opens the season on Tuesday against the Rangers. Cole has played in the league for 12 years and joined the Lightning this year with a one-year $3MM deal.
Olympic Sports:
- One of my favorite moments in sports is when GBR sprinter Derek Redmond tore his hamstring on the back straight and his dad, Jim, came out to help him cross the finish line. That was back at the 1992 Olympics. Well, Jim has died at age 81 – we thank you for one of the most memorable moments in sports.
- Technically Redmond was a DNF but it’s still a great moment.
- British rowing has called for an Open category for trans athletes.
- GBR Sprinter on the 4x100m Relay team, CJ Ujah tested positive for a banned substance however he was cleared of intentionally cheating, He said he took a contaminated substance that was only 10 from Amazon instead of using trusted suppliers. The ban was shortened due to it not being intentional to 22 months (ending 6/5/23). Team GBR was still demoted from their silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics though. That puts the new medal podium as ITA, CAN, CHN.
Soccer:
- Rampant sexual and emotional abuse have been found in the USWNT organization, specifically by 3 men. These 3 men were still allowed to be involved in the soccer world including coach after complaints had been filed (like in 2015). Former players for one of the coaches mentioned how they were sexually abused including trying to get the players to kiss each other to get out of training, sent lewd photos and how he attended a game film session in his underwear. However the reason why he was initially dismissed was not made public in 2015 so he was quickly retired. That is 1 of the 5 other dismissals of coaches in the league with allegations of abuse.
- This was breaking with an E60 interview and TV special.
- Just 3 days after that premier, 76,893 fans packed the stadium to watch ENG and USA in an international friendly match. This is the largest attendance for a friendly in USWNT history.
