Weekly Update

Baseball-MLB: World Series set: Phillies vs Astros. Astros sweep again. Yankees make it finally only to be swept. Phillies>Padres in 5.

Basketball-NBA: Week 1 tipoff. CP 3rd player with 11k assists. Zion potentially out? Raptor-Heat scuffle.

Football-NCAAF: Week 8 saw 6 losses in Top 25. 3 of those were undefeated losses.

Football-NFL: Week 7 only had 5 close games but some high scores. RB McCaffrey traded. Colts bench Ryan. Injuries.

Golf: Rory wins CJ and back to #1. LIV Tour Team Finale this weekend.

Olympic Sports: Malinin lands quad axel at Skate America. US Gym team named for Worlds. Valieva investigation kept private. SUI Odermott wins first WC of ski season.

Baseball:

  • Well first let’s go back. We finally finished up the ALDS game on Tuesday between the Yankees and the Guardians. After multiple postponements and delays, the Yankees won 5-1 despite the Guardians having more hits. So the Yankees moved on to play the Astros with no days between.

  • THE NLCS began between the Phillies and Padres on the same day that the Yankees beat the Guardians. The Phillies came out swinging taking Game 1. The Padres fought back in Game 2 to win 8-5 after a monstrous 13 hits. But that was the only game the Phillies dropped. The Phili team took the next 3 games at home. Game 4 was a high scoring game 10-6 but the other 2 games were close. The Phillies put it away on Sunday in Game 5 at home by 1 run.
  • Both series ended on Sunday but the American League Championship only took 4 games. The Yankees had the marathon to get there and just fell flat. The Astros swept the NY team in just 4 games. In Game 1 the story was Verlander’s pitching 11 KOs to win by 2. Game 2 also had the Houston team by 1. Then the series went to NY and the Yankees went run-less in Game 3 to lose 5-0. And finally Game 4 on Sunday was close with the Yankees leading but an error by 2B Torres in the 7th inning led to the Astros win by 1.

  • World Series is set: Philadelphia Phillies vs Houston Astros. We will start on Friday in Houston for the first 2 games then Phili for 3 and back to Houston if needed in the best of 7 series. Who will win the underdog Phillies or the yet-to-lose in post season Astros? The Phillies haven’t won since 2008 and the Astros won in 2017.

Basketball:

  • Week 1 of season was kicked off with a Celtics and Warriors win. The Bucks are the favorite to win the championship followed by the Celtics then Clippers and Warriors.
  • Suns G Chris Paul became just the 3rd player in NBA history to reach 11,000 assists against the Clippers on Sunday. His parents, wife, children and brother were all in attendance to watch him his him hit the feat. It was a nice alley-oop pass to a dunk by Deandre Ayton to celebrate his 11,0000 mark. The other 2 men are John Stockton and Jason Kidd.
  • Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and Herb Jones are all questionable for the games vs the Mavs on Tuesday after their game with the Jazz. Both Zion and Brandon went out of the game with injuries.

  • A scuffle in the Raptors-Heat game has landed Caleb Martin and Nikola Jovic with a suspension for a game and Christian Koloko with a fine. Jovic hadn’t even made his home debut yet and already has a fine for $15.5k. Koloko got a $44.7k fine. Martin was deemed the instigator of it all.

Football-NCAA:

  • Week 8:
    • Undefeated #7 Ole Miss was an underdog going into Death Valley vs unranked LSU and for good reason. The Tigers hand the Rebels their first loss of the season after our scoring them 28 points in the 2H. LSU topples Ole Miss 45-20

    • Gameday was fittingly at #10 Oregon for their game vs undefeated #9 UCLA. But the Ducks took the lead early and never gave it back. Oregon takes down the undefeated Bruins 45-30.

    • A more weaponized #5 Clemson team hands undefeated #14 Syracuse their first loss. It wasn’t without drama though as the Tigers trailed, had 4 turnovers and had to change QBs but they get the win 27-21. This win makes it the 38th home winning streak, the longest in ACC history.

    • In the Big12 battle of the purple teams #17 Kansas State was up 28-10 on #8 TCU at one point in the 1H but the wheels came off for the wildcats in 2H with 2 missed FGs and 2 interceptions. That allowed the horned frogs to come back. TCU stays undefeated 38-28.
    • #11 Oklahoma State had a nice bounce back homecoming win against #20 Texas who lost a lead of 2TDs to take their 3rd loss of the season. It doesn’t help when your star QB has more interceptions than TD passes. *cough* UT *cough*
    • #6 Alabama was coming off that loss to Tennessee last week but Saban doesn’t lose two in a row. Also Saban’s Tide has outscored Mike Leach’s Bulldogs 90-9 in the lasttwo match ups. Add a 30-6 win yesterday to that as Bama takes down #24 Mississippi St

Football – NFL:

  • Week 7:
    • Only 5 games were decided by a TD. This week had a bunch of games with more college football scores – in other words high scores. The Cardinals got 2 pick-6s in the first half to take down the Saints. The Texans looked to have their game in hand before the 4th quarter when the Raiders scored 21 points to take that W away 38-20.

  • RB Christian McCaffrey has been traded from the Panthers to the 49ers in a blockbuster trade! The Stanford Cardinal was drafted first round by the Carolina team in 2017 and this is only his 2nd spot. He was traded for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round draft pick in 2023 and 5th round pick in 2024. He started this weekend as well against the Chiefs. Breaking: McCaffrey has asked to be traded…that was fast.
  • The Colts have benched QB Matt Ryan and now former UT QB Sam Ehlinger so far. Ryan threw 2 interceptions in their loss this weekend which adds to the 7 previous and 11 fumbles which leads the NFL.
  • Injuries:
    • Seahawks WR DK Metcalf wont need knee surgery but will probably miss this week.
    • Chargers WR Mike Williams suffered a high ankle sprain and ‘will miss some time’
    • Browns TE David Njoku will miss 2-5 weeks for the same thing

Golf:

  • Rory McIlroy is back to World #1 after his win at the CJ Cup in SC. His 3-putt bogey was enough to seal the victory by 1. He was tied going into the final 5 holes but then shot 3 straight birdies to give him that extra room he needed. This is Rory’s 23rd win on the PGA Tour and his 9th time to get to World #1.

  • LIV Team championship is this weekend. This is the team finale event (remember DJ already won the individual). The winners of this event split the $16MM prize but all the teams get paid out of the $50MM purse. The losing team still gets $1MM – now that’s a nice loser’s paycheck. The first two days are single and 4-some match play before the final round of stroke play.

Olympic Sports:

  • For the first time ever in Skate America, Ilia Malinin landed the quad axel during his free skate and needless to say landed him in first place, despite being in 4th after the short program. He landed it with near-perfect execution scores.

  • US Gymnastic team has been named. Those men and ladies will compete in Liverpool starting this weekend and into next week. Shilese Jones is expected to compete for the All-Around gold in her global championship debut. Finals don’t start until Tuesday of next week. Here is the competition schedule.
  • If you remember from the Beijing Olympics, 15 year old Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned substance. She then filed an appeal and was allowed to skate in the individual event, where she fell a bunch of times and finished 4th. She did help the RUS team win team gold though. Now the RUSADA has said they will keep the findings from her investigation secret as she is a ‘protected person’ due to her age. People are pissed.
  • SUI Giant Slalom Olympic champ, Marco Odermott, won his 12th World Cup title in the season opener and proved he deserves his spot as the favorite for the season. He finished 0.76 seconds in front of the next guy in the Alps.
