Soccer: Deadly soccer stadium stampede.

Baseball:

  • HR news: Pujols hit HR #702 on Sunday against the Pirates. This was his 23rd of this season, his final season. Just 3 games left against the Pirates for the Cardinals. As for Aaron Judge, he is still stuck at 61. All weekend people stood when Judge went up to bat and other sporting events were cut in by at-plate appearances. Judge was walked 5xs and struck out 5xs in his 13 at-bats. The Yankees have 4 games left all against the Rangers, including a double header on Tuesday.

  • Playoffs begin Friday with the Wild Card games. These will be a best of 3 series and winner goes to play the divisional champs. We know the teams in the AL games just not who will play whom: Blue Jays, Mariners, Rays and Guardians. The NL is not as straightforward. We know the Cardinals and Padres have a wild card bid. The Phillies and Brewers are still up in the air for the final spot. The Braves and the Mets are still in the running for who gets the first round bye and who has to play in the wild card. If season ended today it would be the Mets to play the wild card. The Dodgers, Yankees and Astros look to have a first round bye.
  • The Padres will be going to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Eliminated teams: Giants*, Orioles*, White Sox*, Twins*, Red Sox, Angels, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Cubs, Marlins, Reds, Rangers, Royals, Pirates, Nationals, Tigers, A’s

Basketball:

  • The Heat and G Tyler Herro have come to a 4-year contract extension for $130MM ($120MM guaranteed). Herro averaged 20.7 points last season and was taken 13th in the draft.

  • As one season (MLB) ends, another begins! The NBA preseason games begin this week on TV. The Bucks and Hawks are playing games in Abu Dhabi and other teams are playing foreign teams in exhibition matches. The Suns actually lost to the AUS team Adelaide last week at home (embarrassing). Regular season begins on 10/18 with the 76ers at Celtics and Lakers at Warriors.
  • Blake Griffin has joined the Celtics.
  • Team USA win 4th straight gold in the FIBA World Cup after beating CHN 83-61.

Football-NCAA:

  • Week 5: There were 10 losses in the Top 25!
    • #7 Kentucky turned it over 2xs in the red zone including in the final minute of the game when going to score the game winning TD and you cant do that against #15 Ole Miss. Rebels hold on to win 22-19.

    • #9 Oklahoma State looks to be a Big 12 contender after beating #16 Baylor 36-25.
    • In the game of maroon, #17 Texas A&M lost again to Mississippi St who just has the Aggies number in recent years. They do so again 42-24.
    • #18 Oklahoma got destroyed by TCU even before the starting QB Gabriel went down and out of the game for concussion protocol. There was 37 points scored in the 1Q alone! The Horned Frogs will be ranked after this win 55-24.
    • #2 Alabama had a scare with their Heisman QB Bryce Young going out of the game with a shoulder injury. That didn’t matter for the game against the #20 Razorbacks though. Bama beats Arkansas 49-26.
    • #21 Minnesota had 3 turnovers to let a good Purdue team beat them 20-10.

    • Also this week, UConn got its first win vs FBS team since 10.26.19 and first home win since 2017. FIU also got it done for the first time since 11.23.19.

  • This week’s rankings: We have a new #1 after Georgia had a huge scare against a bad Mizzou team. The Bulldogs trailed until 5 minutes left in the game. Alabama has retaken the top spot.

  • We also have a lot of new teams ranked for the first time this season: UCLA, TCU, Kansas, Syracuse, Mississippi St and LSU. Oklahoma, Baylor, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Pitt are out. UCLA is off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2013. Even more impressive, Kansas is also 5-0 (this is their first time since 2009) and are ranked for first time since 10/18/09 – the longest streak off the ranking lists in the Power 5.

  • College GameDay is headed to Lawrence for the first time ever for 19. Kansas vs 17. TCU.

  • Wisconsin has parted ways with their HC Paul Cryst after their loss to Illinois on Saturday 34-10. This is the 4th Power 5 coach to be let go and it’s only through week 5. Nebraska, Arizona St, Wisconsin and Georgia Tech are the coaching spots up for grabs.

Football – NFL:

    • The only undefeated team left is the Eagles. On the flip side, the Texans are the only team without a win.

  • Dolphin’s QB Tua Tagovailoa went out of the Bengals game on Thursday with 5 min left in the first half after another hit to his head and possible concussion issue. Remember last week, Tua hit his head and went out of the game stumbling shortly before halftime and then started the 2nd That is now being investigated and clearly that is the right thing to do as the doctor (as a consultant) was fired. Concussion protocol is a 5 step analysis and he was cleared for the game on Thursday but another hit knocked him to the ground and he went into fencing response (where the forearms become rigid as an involuntary response to the head trauma).

  • Speaking of scary health stuff, JJ Watt told the media that he played on Sunday despite having a heart procedure on Thursday. He went into atrial fibrillation which is irregular and quick heart rate. He then got his heart shocked into rhythm and was cleared to play. In an emotional press conference after the game he talked about how many positive ultrasounds he is seeing (with his baby boy on the way) and then that his was not positive.

  • Ravens CB Jimmy Smith is retiring from football after 11 seasons with the Baltimore team. He is most known for stopping the comeback by the 49ers in the Super Bowl, securing the victory for the Ravens in 2013. He spent his entire career with the Ravens since he was drafted #27 in the 2011 draft.

Golf:

  • The Sanderson Farms Championship went to a 2-hole playoff between AUT Sepp Straka and CAN Mackenzie Hughes. Although a lot of par saves were the reason he made it to the layoff, Hughes drained an 8-foot putt for birdie to seal the victory. Hughes started the tournament with a 71 but followed that round with a killer 63 to take it to the weekend. This win was Hughes’ first since Nov 2016 when he won his debut PGA Tour title at the RSM Classic. Oddly enough he won that in a playoff as well and with the same score of -17. 2 South Africans sat in 3rd and 4th. The best finish by an American was 6th with Nick Hardy.

Hockey:

  • Preseason is on TV this week before regular season kicks off next week on Tuesday 10/11th.

Olympic Sports:

  • Paris 2024 is already having some drama leading up to the next Olympic games. The President of French Olympic Committee Brigitte Henriques has sued the Secretary General, Didier Seminet for ‘psychological violence.’ Seminet was removed in September but no news as to the reasons why. Henriques is the first female president of the committee and played soccer internationally. Also the French Football Federation president is also under sexual harassment investigation.

Soccer:

  • 125+ people were killed in a stadium stampede after a soccer game in Java between Arema FC and Malang City. Visiting fans were not allowed at the game due to the history of Indonesian soccer games turning violent. The police fired teargas into the crowd to help things, but it just made things worse as people panicked and ran for the exits. 2 police officers are also among the dead. All Indonesian soccer games this week have been postponed.
