Weekly Update – October 31, 2022 – Happy Halloween!

Weekly Update

Baseball-MLB: World Series is tied and also postponed.

Basketball-NBA: 76ers lose 2 draft picks. Irving in hot water for anti-Semitism.

Football-NCAAF: Week 9 had 6 losses in Top 25. CFP rankings tomorrow! Michigan scuffle. Auburn fires Harsin. Big 12 media deal done.

Football-NFL: Week 8 had 7 close games. Record setting day for DHenry. Trifecta for McCaffrey. Ravens pick up Roquan.

Golf: LIV Team championship Ace’d. Power wins Bermuda.

Olympic Sports: Ledecky new WR. Gym Worlds. Starr Andrews is becoming a star. Demus gets golden upgrade.

Soccer: Portland Thorns are the NWSL champs!

Baseball:

  • The World Series has begun and its already been exciting. Game 1 and 2 were in Houston and we are split 1-1 headed to Phili.
    • In Game 1, the Astros went up 5-0 going into the 4th and when teams are up by 5 through 3 in the post season, that record is 589-19. RF Kyle Tucker became the first Astro to score multiple HRs in a WS game. However the Phillies fought back in the next 2 innings (on star P Verlander), evening the score. So we are all tied through 5 and allll the way through 9. We go to the 10th, Phillies are up first and first batter up, Realmuto HRs. Now we know the Astros have to score but they didn’t. The Phillies are the first team in 20 years to win after losing by 5; 2nd largest comeback in NL history. And the Astros undefeated hopes die.
    • The Houston team rallied in game 2. The Astros came out swinging scoring 3 in the first inning. Later in the 5th, the Stros went up 5. This was Altuve’s 9th 3+ hit game in post season career (he is 3rd all time). P Valdez was excellent in the pitching game keeping the Phillies scoreless til the 7th. He had a runner on 3rd when he was pulled and the very next batter brought him home. The only other run the Phillies scored was on an error on 1B Gurriel in the top of the 9th. Astros win 5-2.

    • Game 3 was supposed to be tonight but that has now been postponed due to rain.

Basketball:

  • The 76ers have had their 2nd round picks for the 2023 and 2024 draft taken away due to violating free agency rules. The team is guilty of having early discussions with PJ Tucker and Danuel House Jr, both are Forwards.
  • We all know the Kanye West anti-semitism rant and now backlash but what will happen to Kyrie Irving?

Football-NCAA:

  • CFP rankings come out on Tuesday! This is a committee of ADs, coaches and analysts that vote on who they think should be ranked. They tend to favor quality wins, quality losses, losing later is better as well as being a conference champion at the end of the season.

  • It finally happened. The college football world has known this one was imminent for a while (like since Feb); Auburn is looking for a new HC after firing Brian Harsin after going 9-12 in less than full seasons. He had an investigation into his running of the program back in Feb which started this ball rolling. Prepare for the Deion Sanders rumors. Why? Because Auburn is a BIG Under Armour school and Deion has high up connections and love for the Nike rival.

  • Big 12 has reached a new media deal for 6 years with ESPN and FOX for $2.2Bn ($380MM/yr).

  • Week 9:
    • #7 TCU was in a back and forth battle with WV. There were only 4 punts in the entire game and 1 in the first half. Tcu wins by 10.
    • #9 Oklahoma state got shutout by #22 K St with their backup Qb. Osu did have 3 turnovers but That 48-0 win was the largest shutout of a top 10 team by a lower ranked opponent ever!
    • #10 Wake Forest turned the ball over 6xs in the 3rd Q (leading to 35 pts) and 8xs total in 2H. Needless to say they lost to Louisville 48-21.

    • Don’t let this score fool you. #2 Ohio St was being pushed by #13 Penn St. Penn st took the lead in the 4th with 9:26 to go but those 4 turnovers added up. Also Tuimoloau (two ee mah low ow but goes by JTT) had the game of his life with 2 sacks, a forced fumble and recovery and two interceptions as a DE. Buckeyes stay undefeated 44-31.
    • #15 ole miss escapes at Texas A&M who has now lost 4 straight. Ole miss has a nice bounce back after their first loss to beat the Aggies 31-38
    • The first play in the Notre Dame vs #17 Syracuse game was a pick six for ND. And that set the tone. The game was really a story of the ND’s running game and interceptions (3 total. 2 for Syracuse). Also Syracuse QB went out which kills.

    • #3 Tennessee had a potential trap game with #1 Georgia next week but the Vols didn’t let that happen. TN beat #19 Kentucky 44-6.
    • #21 Cincinnati looked to have their game won by scoring a TD and 2pt conversion with only 3:04 left in the game. But UCF was able to answer scoring with only 48 seconds left. This ends cincis 19 win streak against in conference opponents. UCF wins 25-21.
    • #24 NC St had a scary one on Thursday against VTech only winning by 1. And #14 Utah was without starting Qb Cam Rising but still beat Wazzu by 4.

    • #25 South Carolina broke into the rankings last week after 4 straight wins but that didn’t last long as Mizzou beat them on Saturday 23-10
    • Miami VTech went to 4OT and no TDs were scored.. no wonder Miami fans don’t go that’s so boring! Mimi had a nice bounce back after 8 turnovers last week to take the W this week.

Football – NFL:

  • Week 8: There were 7 single score games this weekend starting with the TNF game of the Ravens beating the Bucs. Tom Brady struggled only going 26-44 and throwing 1 TD pass all game. The Falcons needed an OT FG to beat the Panthers. The Cowboys scored 14 points in the first 3Qs to handily beat the Bears by 20. The Vikings continued to be dominate beating the Cardinals 34-26. The Saints shutout the Raiders. Hopefully you had AJ Brown for the Eagles on your fantasy team as he was responsible for 3 of the teams 5 TDs. The Commanders and the Colts both scored 10 points in the final Q but the Commanders won by 1 point. The Giants/Seahawks game was a fun one where the Seahawks came back to win scoring 14 in the 4Q. The Lions join the Texans as the only 1 win teams in the league after losing to the Dolphins this weekend.

  • The Texans lost again (shocker) this time to the Titans. RB Derrick Henry had a day with his 4th straight game over 200 yards against the Texans. That also puts him tied for the most games over 200 yards ever in NFL history with 6. His big day put him at 75 career TDs which passes Eddie George as the most in franchise history.
  • RB Christian McCaffrey first player since 2005 to run, catch and throw a TD in one game. Only 4th player in history to complete the trifecta. It was beautiful and the 49ers beat the Rams 31-14.

  • The Ravens have picked up Roquan Smith, the leading tackler in the NFL (83) from the Bears in exchange for a 2nd and 5th round pick in the 2023 draft. This is huge for a team that has been lacking especially in the pass rush.

Golf:

  • Dustin Johnson was the individual champion for the LIV Tour inaugural season and his team, the 4 Aces is the team champion. That means this team of Patrick Reed, Pat Perez and Talor Gooch all split the $16MM prize. Cam Smith’s team, the Punch GC aka Team AUS finished runner-up. The competition came down to the final hole thanks to Patrick Reed’s birdie. Pays to still be a loser in this league though as those teams that finished last still got $1MM.

  • Seamus Power took his 2nd PGA Tour title at the Bermuda Championship this weekend. He clinched the lead with a 25 foot putt on the 14th and held on from there. Also it helped that Ben Griffen fell apart on the back 9. He had 4 straight bogeys and a double on 16. Power, ranked #48 in the World coming into the tournament, was the highest ranked player in attendance.

Olympic Sports:

  • First competition of the season and already Katie Ledecky sets a new WR. She broke the old 1500m record set by GER Sarah Wellbrock by almost 10 seconds at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Toronto.

  • The women are set for finals at the Gymnastic Worlds. Jade Carey and Shilese Jones will compete in the All Around; Jones will also be on Uneven Bars; Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey will be on Vault and Floor and Skye Blakely will be on Balance Beam. Watch this week! Men’s qualifying was today. Asher Hong and Brody Malone will be in the All Around final;

  • Get to know the name Starr Andrews. She is the first US black figure skater to win a Grand Prix medal at Skate Canada. She set an 11 point PB to do that! Her reaction was priceless.
  • Tally up another USA gold in the London Olympics. 400m hurdler, Lashinda Demus has been upgraded to the gold after RUS Natalya Antyukh got DQ’d. She currently serving a doping ban until 2025. Already she Antyukh has had another medal stripped from the 2008 games when the ROC took silver in the 4×4 but her teammate was the cause. She also has a silver from 2004. Antyukh is one of 6 ROC female athletes to be DQ’d in that games in T&F alone.

Soccer:

  • The NWSL final was on Saturday between Kansas City Current vs Portland Thorns. And it didn’t take the Thorns long to get going. MVP Sophia Smith scored just 4 minutes into the game and the only other goal was an own goal by KC in the second half to secure a 3rd NWSL title for the Portland team.
