Football – NCAAF: 2 losses in top 25. Colorado, Florida St escape. Alabama, Texas and Georgia underwhelm but win.
Football – NFL: Week 2 highlights. Jets Rodgers out for season with Achilles.
Golf: Theegala wins first title.
Motorsports: Someone other than Verstappen wins F1.
Olympic Sports: Prefontaine Classic was a great way to end the season.
Baseball – MLB:
- This week’s updates: Phillies star Bryce Harper hit a HR in the 9th to take their game vs Braves into extra innings. But the Braves survived scoring 2 in the 10th. But the Phillies got the 2nd game in their doubleheader despite Braves 1B Olson hitting his 49th and 50th HRs of the season. The Brewers beat down the Marlins 12-0. Nothing else to report there. The Mariners scored 3 runs in the 1st against the Angels but the LA team fought back, tying the game to go to extra innings. Both teams scored 2 in the 10th and then the Angels got 3 in the 11th to put the game away. That would be the last win of the week for them though. They would lose the next 5. Braves 1B Olson got #51 (HR) on Tuesday in their 10th inning win over Phillies. This ties him for the most in Braves history (he would surpass this on Saturday). The Reds also beat the Tigers in the 10th by 1 that same night. For the first time since 2006, the Yankees swept the doubleheader in Fenway, putting them back over .500. This was also the manager’s 500th The A’s took their 100th loss of the season to the Astros on Wednesday 6-2. The Rangers won their 5th straight sweeping the Blue Jays and outscoring them 35-9 in 4 games. Off a bunt, the Royals get their 4th straight win including upsetting the Astros 3 out of the 4 games in the series. The Giants Ps walked 7 batters in their 5-9 loss to the already eliminated Rockies. The Blue Jays/Red Sox game went to 13 innings before getting a winner. Toronto won by 1. But that wasn’t the only 13 inning game, the Cubs Diamondbacks also took it til 13. With both team having 12 hits, the AZ team comes away with the W 7-6. Phillies Schwarber go this 44th HR of the season and his team the W over Cardinals 6-1 Saturday. The Marlins swept the MLB leading Braves including a domination on Sunday where Chisholm hit his 2nd grand slam in consecutive games. Avoiding the sweep, the Nationals beat the Brewers in 11 on Sunday. Despite starting with a 9-run lead, the Giants hung on to win 11-10. The Padres carded their 4th straight win with their 10-1 win over A’s.
- Angels star P and hitter Ohtani is done for the season and his locker has been largely cleaned out. That’s because he is a free agent after this season. He suffered a tear in his elbow ligament so he was don eon the mound but an oblique injury put him out of games for good this season. He ends the season with 44 HRs, 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA and is still leading the vote for the AL MVP.
- The Orioles and Rays have both clinched playoff berths (although no division title as they are competing for the same one). It was funny because these teams were playing each other and the game went to 11 innings but even though the Orioles had the walk off in the 11th, both teams earned a playoff bid. The reason? The Rangers lost on Sunday to the Guardians which guaranteed both teams at least a wild-card spot. The Guardians had a 9-run inning in their crushing defeat of the TX team 9-2. Oh and that completed the 3-game sweep of the Texas team too. The Dodgers have clinched their division for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons in their game against the Mariners that went to 11 innings. We were scoreless in regulation. Both got a score in the 10th and we keep going. The Dodgers then out the heat on with a 5-run inning in 11, the Mariners tried to mount a comeback but only got 1 run. Previously clinched: Braves.
- Eliminated: (NL) Rockies and (AL) Angels*, White Sox, Royals and A’s
Football – NCAAF:
- There were only 2 losses in the Top 25 this week.
- #11 Tennessee went to the Swamp to play Florida and it was clear Milton is not Hendon Hooker. Florida laid it on in 2Q, putting up 20 points and getting the win 29-16.
-
- #15 K St took on their old Big 12 rival, Mizzou. It was a back and forth game Mizzou led at half 17-14. Then K St scored 10 unanswered points in the 3Q but Mizzou came back to take the lead after a quick 29 second drive. Then K St tied it up with a FG in the final 6 minutes. Then two back to back punts. Mizzou drove from the 18 down to the 44 for a possible 61-yard FG. And they nailed it. Mizzou upsets K St 30-27. That is the 2nd longest kick ever (62).
- 29 teams remain undefeated.
- Other major storylines:
- South Carolina was leading #1 Georgia at half 14-3. But Georgia’s D-line was too much for the Gamecocks. Dawgs win 24-14.
- #3 Florida St struggled in a meaningful game against Boston College. BC tried to make a comeback in the 4Q, scoring 13 unanswered points but still fell 2 points short. The Eagles had 18 penalties including the comeback killer. But you just cant have 131 yards of penalties against #3.
- #4 Texas was trailing Wyoming going into the 4Q but they turned it on and won 31-10.
- #6 Ohio St finally looked like themselves and put the beating on Western Kentucky 63-10.
- #10 Alabama has a QB issue! They started Buckner and benched him then their new recruit came out and did better, sorta. They only beat South Florida 17-3. That is the least points scored vs an unranked opponent since 2014.
- LSU looked like a new team playing Mississippi St. They won handily 41-14. Daniels and Nabers connected for a lot of the points.
- The Gameday game lived up to expectations with cheap shots, the Rock on gameday and OT. There was 27 penalties for a total of 269 yards, 6 turnovers and two teams that hated each other. WR and and CB Travis Hunter took a flagrant cheap shot and was sent to the hospital. And that wasn’t the only bad foul. #18 Colorado may have put points on the board first but after that Colorado St turned it on. For a team that hadn’t put up 20 points all last season, they hit it this time, putting up 28 in regulation and never letting Colorado take the lead back after just 7 minutes into the game. Colorado did make a stellar comeback though. Their final drive they had to go 98 yards, score a TD and a two-point conversion to tie. We went to OT. Both teams were successful the first time. Then Colorado scored a TD on 4th down and a 2-point. CSU’s turn. They made it down to the 4-yard line. But penalties were a problem all night and they got pushed back. Ultimately they were unsuccessful and Colorado escapes their rivalry game.
Football – NFL:
- This week in the NFL: TNF moved back to Prime Eagles vs Vikings. It was a good back and forth game but the Vikings had 4 turnovers and the Eagles offense was too much, winning 34-28. The Colts put up 28 points by half and that was all that was needed. They beat the Texans 31-20. The Broncos had a miraculous comeback with QB Russell Wilson throwing an amazing 50 yard TD but they fell short on the 2-point conversion, which would’ve tied the game. For the 2nd week in a row, the Cardinals had the game in hand but lost at the end. This time the Giants were the one to overcome the 21 point deficit. The Chargers/Titans game went into OT. The Chargers went 3&out and the Titans hit the game winning FG. The Seahawks/Lions game also went into OT where the Seahawks scored a TD to put the game away. The Falcons scored 13 points in the final Q to win by 1 point over the Packers who did all of their scoring in 2&3Q. Joe Burrow struggled again this week against the Ravens, who beat the Bengals 27-24. The Cowboys continue to roll especially as the Jets had 4 turnovers.
- We started Monday Night Football with the Jets vs Bills. And all the hype around Jets QB Aaron Rodgers and he only got to play 4 snaps before he tore his Achilles. But the Jets won in OT despite losing Rodgers.
Golf:
- The 25-year-old Californian, Sahith Theegala got his debut PGA Tour win in Napa this weekend at the Fortinet Championship. He won by 2 strokes at Silverado over SH Kim. Theegala has started 74 tournaments on the PGA Tour before carding a win. This is a good note after he bogeyed at the BMW Championship to lose out on an opportunity to play in the Tour Championship, ending his season.
Motorsports:
- For once this season, a Red Bull driver was not on the top spot on the podium. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz took his 2nd win at the Singapore GP. Lando Norris (Mclaren Mercedes) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) round out the podium. Notice whose name isn’t on there? Max Verstappen. In fact Verstappen who has taken all but a few wins (2 where his teammate won), was in 5th.
Olympic Sports:
- Prefontaine Classic was also the Diamond League final this weekend. This was the first year that the iconic meet was granted the finale to the Diamond League season (usually this meet takes place in May). This was also the end of the season for a lot of the athletes. Both 100m World Champions were beaten (Noah Lyles and Sha-Carri). USA Coleman outleaned Lyles and tied his WL time. Another American getting revenge, Rai Benjamin won the 400h, upsetting Karsten Warholm. He lost last week in the Diamond League for the first time in 5 years. And then lost another to the USA. GRE Kirani James won the M 400m after he was DQ’d at Worlds. WRs also went down in the W 5km, ETH Gudaf Tsegaybeating the WR by 5 seconds (12 seconds better than her PR)! SWE Armand Duplantis won the PV – no surprise and broke is own WR, clearing 6.23m – just .01m and ~1 inch above his previous. USA Nuguse also set an American Record in the M 1500m with 3:43.97, more than 2 seconds off the old mark.
