Weekly Update

Baseball: Judge hits 60. Pujols hits 700. Standings as season comes to close.
Basketball: Celtics HC cheating scandal.
Football-NCAA: 6 upsets in the Top 25 including undefeated #6 Oklahoma and #10 Arkansas.
Football – NFL: 8 close games. Tua comes back after head injury. No more Pro Bowl as we know it.
Motorsports: F1 adds Vegas. NASCAR Jimmy Johnson retires.
Olympic Sports: Kipchoge breaks WR.
Tennis: Federer ends on loss.

Baseball:

  • Aaron Judge hit his 60th HR of the season on Tuesday which looked to be the start to a record breaking week. However that was the only homer for the slugger all week. Despite multiple HRs by his team. He has 10 regular season games to break the record though.

  • Albert Pujols hit HRs #699 & #700 on Friday night against the Dodgers. The first was in the 3rd inning and the 700th was in the 4th. We have 8 regular season game left. He now joins only Barry bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714) in the 700 club.
  • The Dodgers clinched the best league record of 106 wins, tying the franchise record with 9 regular season games left (Padres and Rockies). The Guardians clinched the AL Central division for the first time since 2018. The Yankees, Mets and Braves have all clinched playoff berths. Eliminated teams are Red Sox*, Angels*, Diamondbacks*, Rockies*, Cubs, Marlins, Reds, Rangers, Royals, Pirates, Nationals, Tigers, A’s

Basketball:

  • Celtics HC Ime Udoka has been suspended for the entire season after having an intimate but consensual relationship with a female staffer. This is against organization’s guidelines. This is a huge blow to the organization that made it to the finals last year and Udoka is an up and coming coach in his 2nd year as HC. Boston went 28-7 in their final 35 games after a terrible under .500 start.

Football-NCAA:

  • Week 3:
    • #6 Oklahoma falls to unranked Kansas St…again. The wildcats have had the Sooners number in recent years and this was no different. The Wildcats went up early and controlled the game. Another undefeated team goes down
    • #7 USC who is normally so offensively heavy, struggled to score TDs against Oregon St but after an interception in Beaver territory took the W 17-14.

    • #10 Arkansas took an early lead and it looked like the game was going to get ugly but the #23 Texas A&M Aggies fought back to win 23-21.
    • #11 Tennessee finally got it done against #20 Florida. No matter how bad a Florida team was, they still managed to beat the Vols, until Saturday! TN took it 38-33.
    • #15 Oregon looked to be taking an L against Wazzu but after a great final 4 minutes by QB Bo Nix, the Ducks won by 3.

Football – NFL:

  • The Dolphin’s decision to put Tua Tagovailoa back in the game after a head injury is being reviewed by the NFLPA. He hit his head hard in the first half and fell trying to walk off the field. Concussion protocols are a 6 step process that if deemed inconclusive or positive, the player will be removed and brought into the locker room for a more comprehensive examination. After the game, Dolphin’s coach said it was his back that was the issue. TBD what happens here but it could be nothing.

  • The Pro Bowl is no more. Although the Pro Bowl has been around since 1951, the NFL is replacing it with a skills competition and flag football game. This will be held in Vegas the weekend of Feb 5th.

Golf:

  • Putting was the answer for the US team on Sunday to clinch the President’s Cup over the International team. The International team started off slow going into the weekend 8-2 but kept the Americans honest after a good solid Saturday to be 7-11. The Sunday Singles could not have been closer with the Americans winning 1 more than the Internationals but it didn’t matter, they had too much on the Internationals to start the day. Jordan Spieth, who had some crazy good putts, went 5-0-0 for the week and Homa was the best rookie with 4-0-0. The International team was hit hard by the LIV Tour players (Cam Smith and Joaquin Niemann) being banned as they had 8 rookies on the team and the Americans had all 12 members within the world top 25. USA wins 17.5-12.5.

Motorsports:

  • F1 has added another American stop to its calendar, Las Vegas. The downside is the race will be on the strip at night on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend.
  • Jimmie Johnson has retired from racing at the age of 47. Johnson is a 7x NASCAR champion and will now be scaling back his schedule although he is predicted to still race in some of the more acclaimed races like Le Man and IndyCar.

Olympic Sports:

  • Eliud Kipchoge broke his own WR in the marathon on Sunday in Berlin running 2:01:09. That is 30 seconds faster than his previous WR and brings the human race closer to that sub-2 hour mark.

Tennis:

  • Roger Federer has played in his last event, the Laver Cup as part of Team Europe. However Team World beat Team Europe thanks to US star Frances Tiafoe who beat Tsitsipas. The final score was 13-8 and it’s the first time that Team World won the event (5th time competing).
