Weekly Updates – Week of August 20th, 2018
College Football: Urban Meyer and Season begins.
Golf: Northern Trust and #TigervsPhil.
Olympic Sports: Usain Bolt.
Baseball: Little League World Series.
Football
- Urban Meyer, head coach of the #5 Ohio St Buckeyes, has been suspended for the first 3 games this season due to domestic abuse charges against his assistant coach, Zach Smith. He will miss the Buckeyes games against Oregon St, Rutgers and 16. TCU (@ AT&T Stadium in Dallas, TX).
- Why is this important? In Urban Meyers contract with Ohio St, it states that he MUST report all allegations of sexual misconduct. Not just convictions, allegations! This shows that head coaches can no longer be held complicit by their coach’s and player’s actions, something that has been a problem in recent years. See Penn St’s Joe Paterno and Baylor’s Art Briles. Some people are saying is a slap on the wrist, others are furious with Meyer’s response.
- University of Texas invited Texas A&M to renew the old rivalry with a home and home in 2022 and 2023; however Texas A&M declined. The Aggies already have out of conference games scheduled for those years. The Longhorns have now scheduled the Crimson Tide for those years. The 2 Texas teams have not played each other since 2011.
- A number of football teams announced their starting QBs for the year.
Golf
- Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods agreed to play a head-to-head match on Nov 23rd with $9MM to go to the winner. The match will be held in Las Vegas. Phil Mickelson is currently ranked # 22 on the Official World Golf Ranking while Tiger is #26. However, Tiger is #1 on the all time money list having earned $113MM over his career. Phil is #2 with $87MM. Both may not be at the top of their game but it’s a match of 2 of golf’s biggest names. #TigervsPhil
- The FedEx Cup playoffs started today with the Northern Trust. This will go on for 4 weeks: Northern Trust (NJ), Dell Technologies Championship (MA), BMW Championship (PA) and ending with the TOUR Championship (GA). Each week the number of competitors decreases with the Top 125 players playing in the Northern Trust and only the Top 30 in the Tour Championship.
- Think of these 4 tournaments like the post season for other sports, therefore only the best players make it and the FedEx Cup winner is determined by who comes out on top.
- Top 5 players in the FedEx Cup (before playoff starts): Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose and Bubba Watson.

- Usain Bolt is taking a run at soccer. Bolt began training with the Australian A-League club Central Coast Mariners on Tuesday.
