Baseball – MLB:

  • Orioles’ manager Brandon Hyde was ejected for the first time since he joined this team during today’s game against the Red Sox. Hyde was arguing there should have been an interference call on a double play in the 5th
  • Angel OF Mike Trout will be back and playing for the Angels for the games against the Rangers. Trout has been out due to a groin injury since last week.

Basketball – College:

  • UVA won the National Championship one week ago against Texas Tech. And oh what a game it was. It went into OT and even had a dunk in the last minute.

  • Gonzaga Hachimura entering the draft
  • UVA Hunter and Jerome entering the draft

Basketball – NBA:

  • Playoffs are here!
    • Best of 7 games advance. 8 teams from the East and 8 teams from the West. Conference quarterfinals à Conference semifinals à Conference Finals à Championship
  • Kings name Luke Walton as new head coach, who previously worked for the Lakers.
  • Warriors Kevin Durant and Clippers Patrick Beverley were both ejected in the 4th quarter after a verbal back and forth.

Football – NFL:

  • We could see another franchise tag but this time on QB Russell Wilson for the Seahawks. Wilson’s contract is up at the end of this season but he’s in no rush to sign an extension. The deadline Wilson has set is Monday at midnight. His last contract was signed on the deadline for 4 years for $88MM. Wilson is not one of the players who is going to sit out until he gets a contract.
  • Raiders WR Antonio Brown reached a settlement in the 2 cases where he threw items from an apartment balcony.

Golf:

  • In case you live under a rock: This guy names Tiger Woods won the Masters early on Sunday afternoon by one stroke over Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele. It was a tight competition and a lot of fun to watch. This is Tiger Woods’ 5th Masters win (green jacket), 15th major win and 81st PGA Tour win. Tiger is only 1 PGA tour win behind the leader Sam Snead with 82 and is 3 majors behind the leader Jack Nicklaus with 18. This is an amazing comeback story and Tiger’s first major win since his personal life hit the fan (DUI, sex scandal, etc.).
    • If someone you know did miss it, it was probably because the Masters final round was moved up due to inclement weather. But it was so worth getting up early for.
    • Francesco Molinari was leading by 2 going into the final round but had a rough day scoring 2 over par.

Olympic Sports:

  • The Boston marathon was moved to today due to weather. It was competed this morning.
    • The Men’s event was a sprint at the finish between Lawrence Cherono and Lelisa Desisa. Cherono won with a time of 2:07.57 and just .02 seconds behind was Desisa.
    • Worknesh Degefa ran 20 miles by herself to take the victory in the Women’s race with a time of 2:23.30. She was 3 minutes ahead of all the other women at the halfway point.

  • The USA won the women’s hockey world championship after an OT goal was stripped from Finland for goaltender interference. Officials spent 10 minutes reviewing the goal before deciding to take the win away and make the ladies keep playing. The USA won in a shootout.
  • There is a new swimming league in town that’s got some big names behind it: The International Swimming League. It will feature 4 US teams and 4 foreign teams of mixed genders competing and the athletes getting paid. The US teams will be NY Breakers, LA Current, DC Trident and the Cali Condors (in SF) while the foreign teams will be in London, Rome Budapest and (likely) France. Right now Katie Ledecky, Nathan Adrian, Simone Manuel and Ryan Murphy are ambassadors with Jason Lezak as one of the team managers. The teams will compete in 12 events for points. More info to come on this.
  • The USA won the World Team Trophy thanks to 1-2 performances in both the short program and free skate by Nathan Chen and Vincent Zhou.
  • 10 year old Sky Brown won the UK National Skateboarding Championships with her sights set on Tokyo 2020 when the event debuts.
  • Russian parliament passed a vote to fine athletes found doping and intentionally cheating up to $775 (~50k rubles).
