Baseball: Mr. Tiger dies at age 85.
Basketball: HoF class of 2020.
Football: NFL virtual draft set for April 23-25. Rams new logo. Leach tweet gets him in trouble.
Golf: Schedule changes! Masters set for November. OPEN canceled.
Olympic Sports: Brignone wins overall World Cup. Kipsang arrested for flouting curfew.
Baseball:
- Al Kaline, who played 22 years as a OF on the Tigers, died at age 85. His nickname was even Mr. Tiger. His #6 jersey was retired from use in 1980 and he was in the HoF that same year.
Basketball:
- This year’s HoF class is full of stars including Kobe Bryant (duh), Kevin Garnet and Tim Duncan to name a few. All 8 will be inducted Aug 29th. For the full list, see here.
Football:
- The NFL GMs will have their work cut out for them as the NFL draft has officially been set to happen on schedule but completely virtual. Several teams filed for a delay in the draft but no dice. Better make sure your wifi doesn’t fail!
- The Rams have a new logo. It has not been smooth sailing. Even HoF Eric Dickerson is not a fan. The COO even read mean tweets on the new logo at a telethon to raise money for COVID 19 relief. They raised $2MM. Your thoughts?
- Mike Leach, the new HC for Mississippi St, tweeted a meme about quarantining for COVID and it was not well received. It has since been deleted but apparently it said “After 2 weeks of quarantine with her husband, Gertrude decided to knit him a scarf ..” and showed the woman knitting a noose. An offensive lineman has since entered the transfer portal and Leach has apologized. Come on people, we have bigger things to worry about.
- College Football is still expected to start on time! Some good news we could all use to hear.
Golf:
- The PGA Tour have made several changes to their calendar.
- The OPEN has been canceled (originally July 16-19). This is the first time since 1945 (WWII) that the OPEN will not take place.
- The PGA Championship will now be played Aug 6-9 (originally May 14-17)
- The FedEx Cup playoffs will now start one week delayed with the first one (Northern Trust) to be held on Aug 20-23 and ending with the TOUR Championship on Sept 3-7.
- The US Open will now be played Sept 17-20 (originally June 18-21)
- The Masters will now be played Nov 12-15 (originally April 9-12)
- The Olympics have also obviously been postponed a year until July/Aug 2021
- The Ryder Cup will keep its late Sept dates as originally scheduled. Other PGA Tour tournaments will look at rescheduling to the weeks now left open by the movement of the majors. As of right now, the PGA Tour is set to resume with the Charles Schwab Challenge on May 21-24. But realistically, it looks like the first tournament back to normal will be the Memorial in June. Lets hope that stays true!
Olympic Sports:
- Federica Brignone is officially the winner of the overall World Cup and got the trophy delivered to her house over the weekend. She is the first Italian to win. Brignone won after overtaking Shiffrin, who took some time off to mourn the sudden death of her father, and the season was then cut short for COVID19 so Mikalea was not able to comeback in the points.
- Wilson Kipsang, who formerly held the WR in the marathon, was arrested on Thursday after being out in a bar after the 7pm coronavirus curfew in Kenya. He was arrested with 19 others after they locked themselves in a nightclub.
What to Watch this Week
Nothing…. #WeMissItToo
- On a positive note, the Korean baseball league is set to have preseason games begin April 21st! There is your light at the end of the tunnel!
