Baseball – MLB:

  • 5 players were ejected in the Pirates/Reds game after an altercation in the 4th Red’s RF Yasiel Puig, RPitcher Amir Garrett and Manager David Bell, as well as Pirates RPitchers Keone Kela and Felipe Vazquez were all ejected. The incident started after Pirates P Chris Archer threw a fastball behind 1B Dietrich’s back. Warnings were issued to both teams. Manager Bell said that Archer should’ve been ejected. • Cubs ace Jon Lester injured his hamstring in home opener after just 2 batters. The injury is believed to have happened when he slid into 2nd base in the 2nd
  • Adam Ottavino who has recently added to the Yankees and was infamously known for saying “I would strike Babe Ruth out every time,” stars in a new commercial. The commercial features Ottavino pitching to Ruth, who definitely gets the best of the Yankee newcomer. Ottavino had a blast filming the commercial and got to laugh at his comment a little. He signed a 3 year contract for $27MM.

Basketball – College:

  • Texas Tech beat Michigan St to advance to the final after playing in their first Final Four.
  • UVA held off the Auburn Tigers to win by 1 point 62-62.
    • UVA plays Texas Tech tonight at 8:20pm on CBS
  • Last night the Baylor women beat Notre Dame 82-81 to win their 3rd national championship. Congrats ladies.

korver.JPG

Basketball – NBA:

  • Utah Jazz G Kyle Korver wrote a first person piece about racism and playing in the NBA as a white guy and racism in America. A lot of this (but not all) was prompted by the altercation between a Jazz fan and Russell Westbrook. Many players around the league have been praising Korver for his piece.
  • The Rockets broke their own NBA record by scoring 27 3-pointers in their game against the Suns on Sunday to win 149-113. Harden scored 30 points in the 3 quarters that he played.
  • Warriors will be the #1 seed from the West in the playoffs with their big win over the Clippers 131-104.
  • Nets make first playoffs since 2014-15 season. The Magic make their first playoffs since 2012.

tuberville.JPG

Football – College:

  • Former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville is running for Alabama Senate 2020 as a republican to win back the seat for Republicans from Democrat Doug Jones. He will be up against congressman Bradley Byrne. The primary will be held in March 3rd, 2020. Tuberville spent 21 seasons as a head coach for Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas Tech and Cincinnati.
  • #38 in the ESPN Junior 300, WR Jordan Johnson, has agreed to go to Notre Dame.
  • Sooner LB Caleb Kelly suffered a lower body injury and will have surgery. TBD on how long he will be out
  • Texas LB De’Gabriel Floyd will miss the 2019 season due to stenosis which is a narrowing of the spinal column.

Football – NFL:

  • Rugby fans are about to become Buffalo Bills fans after England rugby union player Christian Wade signed to play in the NFL on Monday. He quit English Premiership Wasps in October and had been training for the NFL since then.
  • Cardinals have resigned DT Rodney Gunter for another year.

conners.JPG

Golf:

  • Corey Conners won the Valero Texas Open and punched his ticket to play in the Masters this coming up weekend. Conners qualified for the Valero during Monday’s qualifier, the first player to do this in 9 years. Si Woo Kim led the first 3 days of the tournament but only shot par on the final day.

masters.JPG

  • The Masters will be played Thursday – Sunday and is the first of the 4 majors (one in each of the next 4 months). Have your calcuttas ready! The whole office will be talking golf at the end of this week and early next.

jin young.JPG

  • Jin Young Ko won the ANA Inspiration which was her first major win. A win here is always celebrated by a jump into Poppie’s Pond. Ko has won 4xs on the LPGA Tour and leads the money list for this year so far.

marks.JPG

Olympic Sports:

  • Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill will lead the US men’s hockey team at worlds next month in Slovakia. This will be the 3rd straight year that Blashill will coach the world team; last time the USA got 3rd.
  • Florida’s Caroline Marks won her first World Surfing League title at the age of 17. Marks beat the 2nd place finisher by only 2.16 points. The top 10 ranked men and 8 ranked women from the WSL qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where surfing will debut as an Olympic sport. We have not seen the last of this girl.
  • Kenya’s Edward Cheserk tied the IAAF World record in the 5k road race of 13 min 29 seconds. In case you don’t want to do the math, that’s an average of 4:21/mile. Cheserk’s gf Sharon Lokedi won the women’s 5k in 15:48 right before Cheserk ran. That’s a fast couple.
  • Michigan Supreme court rejects Larry Nassar’s appeal… I won’t dignify him with any more info. The appeal was not deserved. Good job Michigan court!
