Weekly Update – Week of August 30, 2021

Weekly Update

Baseball: All the Mets news. Fans booing and players with their thumbs down. Syndergaard has COVID. #36 retired.

Football-NCAAF: 5 ranked vs ranked games this week! GameDay at Clemson vs Georgia. Teams from LA relocated for Ida.

Football-NFL: Preseason is over. Starting QBs are being named.

Golf: Finau wins Northern Trust. Cantlay vs DeCheambeau Playoff during Playoffs. TOUR Championship this weekend.

Olympic Sports: Paralympic updates. Suni Lee to DTWS.

Soccer: Ronaldo to ManU.

Tennis: US Open begins this week!

Baseball-MLB:

  • Mets players have had it with their fans! Mets fans have started booing their own players when they struggle at the plate, booing them when they strikeout. The players have had enough. SS Javier Baez gave the thumbs down sign to the crowd after he ran in his HR. Baez joins Kevin Pillar and Francisco Lindor all flashing thumbs down signs after their hits yesterday. The Mets have gone 9-20 since the trade deadline (when Baez joined from the Cubs) and have fallen out of the playoff picture. Fans are frustrated and now so are the players.
  • Sticking with Mets news, RHP Noah Syndergaard has tested positive for COVID despite being vaccinated. Syndergaard hasn’t pitched in the majors since 9/29/2019 due to the covid shut down and tommy john surgery. He was working his way back through rehab when he tested positive. He was supposed to throw yesterday in Single A.
  • All the Mets news today. #36 is now retired by the Mets in honor of their LHP Jerry Koosman. He played for the Mets from 1967-1978 winning the World Series in 1969. His is the 5th number to be retired by the NY team.
  • The Mets vs Marlins game on Sunday only saw 9 pitches before the game was called due to rain. That game has been rescheduled for Tuesday.
  • MLB Regular season ends on Oct 3 so I will now include the standings on the weekly basis.
    • American League: Rays, Astros & Yankees/White Sox (tied)
    • National League: Giants, Dodgers & Brewers

Football-NCAAF:

  • Last week’s results: Week 0 saw another L for the Cornhuskers even after the Fighting Illini lost their starting QB in the 1st Q. Nebraska had never lost in August before this game. And HC Scott Frost seems to like his butt being on fire bc he is def in the hot seat this season.
  • College football season really begins this week! Get ready because it is going to be action packed! We have 5 ranked vs ranked games. And Top 25 games spread over 4 days this week – thanks Labor Day weekend. We even have a power 5 match up on Monday. GameDay will be at 5. Georgia vs 3. Clemson.
    • Upset watch: San Jose St vs USC. LSU vs UCLA. Fresno St vs Oregon.

  • The LSU football team relocated to Houston this week before Hurricane Ida hit the shores of NOLA. This way their game against UCLA on Saturday could still be played and they could still practice. Tulane, who plays OU this Saturday, has moved to Alabama. The Ragin Cajuns are scheduled to play Texas week 1 but since they are in Lafayette (E of the path of Ida), they stayed put. Ida hit the shores of NOLA last night, on the same day that Hurricane Katrina hit the state in 2005.
  • SMU has named its starting QB and it’s another transfer, Tanner Mordecai from OU beat out the 4 star freshman recruit Preston Stone for the job. Stone chose SMU over LSU, Penn St, Texas and USC. How did Mordecai end up in Dallas you may ask? Well the QB coach being Lincoln Riley’s brother might have something to do with that easy transition for the former Sooner.

Football-NFL:

  • Preseason has now concluded and we wait for the start of regular season. NFL season begins 9/9 with the Cowboys vs Bucs.
  • If you listened to my fantasy football post, keep checking ESPN as coaches are releasing their starting QBs everyday! Winston has already been named the starter for the Saints.
    • Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has been put on notice as the team acquired Gardener Minshew II from the Jags (in exchange for a conditional 6th round pick). Minshew currently sits as the 3rd QB for the Phili team behind Hurts and Joe Flacco.

Golf:

  • Tony Finau won the first tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the Northern Trust. The tournament finished on Monday after a postponed final round due to Henri. This is Finau’s first win since 2016 – that’s 1975 days (ESPN counted). And he’s been close so many times with 40 Top 10s and 8 runner up finishes. Only Oosthuizen has more runner ups (11).

  • The 2nd Playoff tournament, the BMW Championship, ended in epic fashion yesterday. Bryson DeChambeau looked like he could not be stopped, especially after shooting a career low round 60 on Friday. He missed this 6 foot putt to join the coveted 59 club. He would’ve been only the 12th person to shoot 59. Scottie Scheffler accomplished the feat at last year’s Northern Trust. But Patrick Cantlay never gave up. He made a bunch of clutch must-have putts including a birdie on the 18th to force a playoff. He and DeChambeau went 6 extra holes before Cantlay made another impressive putt to clinch the win. He will now start 3 strokes ahead of Bryson in the Tour Championship, the final tournament of the year. This is Cantlay’s 3rd win of the season and his 5th on the PGA Tour.
  • With that win, Patrick Cantlay secured his spot on the Ryder Cup team for the USA. He joins Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas with the automatic spots. The captain Steve Stricker will then have the Captain’s picks left.

Olympic Sports:

  • Paralympics are in full swing! Closing ceremonies on Sunday. The USA currently has 49 medals of which 18 are gold.  CHN leads the way in both categories with 119 medals (54 golds) followed by GBR and RPC, UKR. Full medal count here.
    • Swimming has produced 8 golds while athletics has 4 so far. One of the most famous Paralympians, Jessica Long, brought home gold in the W 200m IM. Similar to the Olympics, swimming competes first then track and field.
    • I know we’ve all seen the XFinity commercial with defending Paralympic gold medalist, David Brown in it, well he competes in the 100m T11 with heats tomorrow and the final on Thursday. He is the only blind man to have run 100m under 11 seconds.
    • #GFHint: the letter and number next to each Paralympic event indicates the type of disability the athletes in that event have and to what degree. There are 10 impairments (impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, visual impairment and intellectual impairment).
  • USA Olympic All-Around gold medalist, Suni lee, will be competing on Dancing with the Stars this season. So much for school, huh Suni?

Soccer:

  • Cristiano Ronaldo is now heading to ManU! After last week saying he wouldn’t leave Juventus, Ronaldo took a €15MM deal to return to Old Trafford. He played for ManU from 2003-2009 before leaving to go to Real Madrid from 2009-2018. He had only played with Juventus since 2018.

Tennis:

  • US Open begins today! But if you want to attend, you will need a vaccine but capacity is 100%. There are some major names missing from this one: Serena & Venus Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. There are 17 single’s tiles between those 4. Serena pulled out, citing a hamstring injury.
    • Djokovic is still chasing the calendar slam, which he can win if he wins this tournament. Only 5 other tennis players in history have completed the calendar slam. But he hasn’t played a match since losing the bronze medal match in Tokyo, dashing his hopes for the Golden Slam (something only accomplished once by Stephi Graff in 1988).
    • Naomi Osaka is back as well! She has won 2 of the last 3 US Opens and is the favorite. Although Ash Barty plans to give her a run for her money.
