Football/ Golf/ Olympic Sports/ Soccer/ Weekly Update

Basketball – College: Shareef O’Neal undergoes heart procedure. Nova freshman disses his own team. K St Sr Wade out indefinitely. 

Basketball – NBA:  First female Assistant GM. 

Football – College: Bowl Games continue this week. #1 recruit commits to Oregon. 

Football – NFL: Some great upsets. Some shut outs. And a ring. 

Olympic Sports: Vonn back for Jan races. Silver is the USA luge team’s color. 

Basketball – College:

  • Shareef O’Neal (son of Shaq) is recovering well after having a heart procedure on Thursday. O’Neal will miss his freshman season at UCLA due to this heart ailment.
  • Villanova freshman Jahvon Quinerly posted “Was my 2nd choice for a reason” post on Instagram after Nova lost to Penn. It was quickly deleted but he has to issue a formal apology for this negative comments. Other things to note: Quinerly played 1 minute in the game in question and Nova lost 78-75.
  • Dean Wade, a Senior at Kansas St, is out indefinitely with an unknown injury during the Georgia St game on Saturday. The senior played forward for the T-25 ranked Wildcats.

Basketball – NBA

  • Indiana Pacers hired Kelly Krauskopf as first assistant GM in NBA. Krauskopf was a longtime executive in the WNBA.
  • John Wall put up 40 points on LeBron James and the Lakers. This snaps a 4 game losing streak.

Football – College

  • Not a whole lot of college football news but..
  • Kayvon Thibodeaux committed to the Oregon Ducks over the weekend. Kayvon is the #1 ESPN recruit and plays DE. He chose Oregon over Alabama, Florida and Florida St.
  • Bowl season continues this week. First results of the bowl games:

Football – NFL

  • Eagles upset the Rams 30-23 on Sunday to give the Rams their 3rd loss. This was considered one of the biggest upsets of the season.
  • The Cowboys, who were leading the NFC-East were shut out for the first time since 2003 this weekend against the Colts final score of 23-0. This ends the 4th longest streak between shutouts with 243 games. (Saints hold the record with 269 followed by Ravens and Panthers).
  • The Titans shutout the Giants this weekend 17-0. Their celebration dance you might recognize.
  • Seahawks committed a franchise record 148 yrds worth of penalties (14) in Sunday’s OT loss to 49ers (final 26-23).
  • The Bears made the playoffs and clinched the NFC-North title with the win this weekend. That’s not the only thing LT Charles Leno is celebrating. #shesaidyes

Golf:

  • Davis Love III and son Dru won the PNC Father-Son Challenge this weekend in record fashion. The pair finished a record 16 under par in scramble format. They won by 3 to total 26 under par, another record in scramble format.
    • This event can only be played if the golfer has won a major or a Players Championship and their son cannot hold a PGA Tour sanctioned card.
  • Golf now takes an unprecedented break for 2 weeks and the PGA Tour will resume in Hawaii with the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Jan.

Olympic Sports

  • Lindsey Vonn will return to racing next month after she sprained and hyperextended a ligament in her knee during practice in November. She plans to be back for the Jan 12-13 race in Austria. Remember that Vonn is chasing the most World Titles ever. She sits at 82 with the record at 86 set by Swede Ingemar Stenmark.
  • Americans kill it at the World Cup luge races this weekend. Chris Mazdzer (who was a medalist for the USA in Pyeongchang) teamed up with Jayson Terdiman to take silver in doubles. Summer Britcher earned another silver for the US in the women’s sprint. She was the only non-German medalist.
  • Salt Lake City will be the only US city to bid for the Olympics, most likely in 2030. Denver and Reno were also in the running. 2026 bidders are already submitted and are between Sweden and Italy.

Soccer:

  • Italian Super Cup final is set to be played in Saudi Arabia in Jan but in light of all the political drama, it is uncertain if they will actually end up playing the final there.
    • The game is set for Jan 16th Juventus vs AC Milan
