Weekly Update – Week of February 11th

Basketball – College: #3 vs #8 match up in the ACC on Monday and #1 vs #5 match up in the SEC on Saturday. Georgia’s top recruit.

Basketball – NBA: All-Star Game on Sun. Davis allowed to finish the season. Westbrook breaks MJ’s record. Epic OKC-Houston game.

Football – College: Stoops returns to coaching but not to NCAA or NFL.

Football – NFL: Michael Vick to the AAF.

Golf: Some killer shots by the celebs and the pros with Mickelson victorious.

Olympic Sports: Vonn is officially retired. German gold medalist rower dies. USA wins ice dancing.

Basketball – College:

  • Georgia received its highest recruit (#5) with homegrown guard Anthony Edwards.
  • Duke is looking into sexual assault allegation against one of their basketball players that happened in 1999. The basketball player has not been named (it is a former player). Also of note, the woman that accused the basketball player also accused Governor Fairfax of the same thing.
  • #4 Gonzaga loses forward Killian Tillie for the rest of the regular season to a torn ligament in his right foot.
  • Duke returns to #1 after beating #3 UVA. Sorry Vols.

Basketball – NBA:

  • The All Star Game is on Sunday and its Team LeBron vs Team Giannis! Check out the next post for more info!
  • Pelicans are going to let Anthony Davis play the rest of the season after the trade deadline passed on Thursday. After missing 9 games for a finger injury, he will be back in a Pelicans jersey this week.
  • Russell Westbrook passes Michael Jordan and ties Wilt Chamberlin in 1968 on longest triple-double streak (9) after the Rockets-Thunder game on Saturday.
    • Also in this game, James Harden extends his streak of 30+ points in a game to 29. Wilt Chamberlin also holds this record (and the 2nd longest spot – just 2 away from where Harden is now). But Harden will have to score 30+ points in 36 more games to get Wilt’s ultimate record.
    • This game was an interesting one with the Rockets leading 70-48 at halftime but ultimately losing 117-112. OKC overcame the largest deficit in franchise history (26 points).
  • Knicks used then deleted a photo of Kevin Durant on their season ticket holder pitch. Durant becomes a free agent in 2019. While this is not unheard of, it is ambiguous with his upcoming free agency.
  •  Nik Stauskas is now a Cavalier after being traded 3xs and released last week.

Football – College:

  • Bob Stoops, retired head coach at the University of Oklahoma, has come out of retirement to coach in the XFL. He will be the head coach and GM of the Dallas franchise.
    • The XFL is a football league that will debut in 2020 playing a 10 game season. This is the second launch of this league which is headed by the WWE CEO.

Football – NFL:

  • Michael Vick will be in charge of player development and player welfare for the new AAF league (Alliance of American Football). See a later post about the new leagues that are coming out!

Golf:

  • Phil Mickelson won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am this morning by 3 to end 19 under par over Paul Casey. Due to weather the tournament ran into today (Monday). The weather ranged from sunny and high 50s to hail (pictured above), pouring ran and 40s.
    • Don’t feel too bad for Paul. Paul Casey and his partner Don Colleran (FedEx exec) won the Pro-Am part of the tournament with a combined score of 34 under par.
    • If you watched, you saw a bunch of celebs playing like the Bachelor’s Chris Harrison, Wayne Gretzky and Tony Romo.
      • Tony Romo might’ve had the best shot of the weekend. This shot off the hospitality tent!

Olympic Sports:

  • Lindsey Vonn is done. Officially retired. Her career ran 18 years with 14 Olympic starts, 25 World Championship starts, 393 World Cup starts and would end with the 432nd start. She won bronze in her final downhill on Sunday. A fitting way to end her career and in the presence of greatness with Ingemar in attendance (he is the GOAT of skiing – with 84 World Cup victories).

  • 3 men have been charged with hate crimes after attacking the Serbian water polo team on Saturday. This just furthers an already strained relationship between Croatia and Serbia which fought wars with each other in the 1990s.
  • Maximilian Reinelt, a German rower who won the gold medal in 8 men crew in 2012 London Olympics and the silver in Rio, died at the age of 30 after collapsing while cross country skiing.
  • Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the ice dancing title for the USA in the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. Worlds is just a month away, way to get some momentum.
