Baseball – MLB:

  • The American League won the All-Star game on Tuesday 4-3 with Tanaka getting the W and Kershaw getting the loss. The American league scored first in the 2nd inning and never trailed getting 8 hits compared to the 5 by the National League.
  • The Rays experienced heart break in the 9th inning, despite winning the game, when their perfect game was ruined by a base hit off of Ryan Yarbrough. Yarbrough had been in from the 3rd This coming just days after the Angels had the 13th no hitter in MLB history. The difference? No perfect game has been done by more than a single pitcher. Meaning no team has successfully had a no hitter after changing pitchers that streak continues after the 9th inning against the Orioles.
    • #GFHint: The difference between a perfect game vs a no-hitter: A perfect game is when NO batters make it on base for any reason. A no-hitter is when no batter gets a hit but can make it to the base due to other reasons (walk, error or getting hit by the ball)
  • The Angels placed the no-hitter ball in Skaggs locker after their game on Saturday. The game took place on what would’ve been Skaggs’ 28th bday and the pitcher wore Skaggs’ jersey to honor him on the occasion. Skaggs’ mom threw out the first pitch the game before which was the first home series since Skaggs’ death.
  • HoF Cardinal’s pitcher Bob Gibson announced that he has pancreatic cancer. Gibson won the Cy Young award and the National League MVL and is considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time.

Basketball:

  • Anthony Davis will skip the USA Basketball training camp which is usually the training ground for the Olympic team. Davis is not ruling out playing in Tokyo but wants to spend offseason focusing on next season first. Don’t forget: Davis now plays for the Lakers.
  • The Summer League Finale will feature the Grizzlies vs Timberwolves in Vegas.

Football:

  • Big 12 media days are this week along with ACC media days. With only 47 days until football season, everyone is getting ready!
    • Big 12 media days on Monday & Tuesday @ 3pm on ESPNU
    • ACC media days on Wednesday & Thursday @ 3pm on ESPNU
  • Ezekiel Elliott has had all charges dropped and will not be suspended after the altercation with a security guard in Vegas in May
  • 49ers reached agreement with kicker Robbie Gould to 2 yr contract for $10.5MM guaranteed
  • Titans LB Derrick Morgan, age 30, is retiring

Golf:

  • Dylan Frittelli won his first PGA title at the John Deere Classic on Sunday with a final day of -7 to win by 2 strokes. Before this win, he was known for making the winning putt for UT at the NCAA tournament in 2012. Dylan is 29 from South Africa and previously this season had only 1 top 20 finish. It helps when your scrambling % this week was the best of any PGA Tour player this season @ 93.75%!
  • The Open Championship is this week aka the British Open. This year it is the final major of the season. Get ready for some crazy golf coming at you from Portrush, Northern Ireland!
    • Some of the greatest names in golf were missing this tournament to complete their grand slam: Byron Nelson, Raymond Floyd

Olympic Sports:

  • Pernell Whitaker, one of the best boxers in history: 4 weight World Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist and Boxing HoF, was hit by a car when he was crossing the street in Virginia Beach, VA. He later died at age 55.
  • As of the completion of Stage 10, Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe is the leader of the general classification in the Tour de France. Julian received the yellow jersey after stage 8, where he took over the general lead. He so far has only won stage 3.
    • Top American Tejay van Garderen has pulled out of the Tour de France after breaking his hand in a crash during stage 7. He hit a road divider and fell on his face only 7km into the stage (total 230km). He did finish the stage that day however!

  • New World Record: Sifan Hassan (NED) broke the women’s mile record that stood since 1996 with a time of 4:12.33 at the Herculis Diamond League meet on Friday.
    • Also during that meet Justin Gatlin won the 100m with a time of 9.91, only .01seconds over Noah Lyles and Michael Rodgers made it an American sweep of the 100m men’s podium. #tbt since Justin Gatlin is 37 and started competing professionally in 2002 and getting his first Olympic gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
  • Russian track coach Vladimir Kazarin was banned from coaching after his doping offenses but was catch breaking that ban with only a beard for disguise. He is famous for coaching the whistle blower Yulia Stepanova along with several other Olympians and World Champions.
  • Former World Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist from the 2004 Athens Olympics, Filippo Magnini saved a drowning tourist over the shores of Sardinia

Tennis:

  • Men’s Singles: Novak Djokovic defended his Wimbledon title from a year ago in a grueling battle against Roger Federer on Sunday. The match went for a Wimbledon-record setting 4 hours and 57 minutes and was the first Grand Slam final match to go into a tie breaker. For this to even happen at the Wimbledon final match, the final set had to reach 12-12 games. Both players faced championship points but Novak pulled it out at the end.
  • Women’s Singles: Serena Williams lost in straight sets in an easy Wimbledon final to Romania’s Simona Halep (6-2; 6-2). Halep was the #7 seed compared to #11 Williams. If Williams had won she would tie the most singles Grand Slam titles of all time. Until next time, Serena!
  • Other winners:
    • Ukrainian Men’s Doubles Team Cabal/Farah won their title with 4 of their 5 sets going to tie breakers.
    • Taipei’s Hsieh and Czech’s Strycova won the women’s doubles title in straight sets.
    • Another Taipei woman was a winner when Chan/Dodig won the Mixed Doubles title also in straight sets.
  • Next and last Grand Slam event will be the US Open in late August
