Baseball – MLB: Lindor pushes for netting extension after his foul ball hits 3yr old. P Woodruff to IL. 1B Zimmerman re-injured foot. Yankees/Red Sox this week. AL/NL Standings.
Basketball: Beal deal. Giannis younger brother to the Lakers. Bucks deal for Korver.
Football: Petrus dies from heat stroke. Minnesota player 4x cancer survivor. Reed suspended for 6 games. Maryland coach helping with Falcons training camp. Sending all the good feelings to Devin White.
Golf: An Irish Open champ in an Irish Open Championship. Trump contributes to the Barbasol winner.
Olympic Sports: Swimming Worlds. New WR. Biles remains undefeated. TdF final week.
Baseball – MLB:
- Francisco Lindor scored a HR during the Indians win over the Royals on Sunday but that wasn’t the only thing of note. For at least the 3rd time this season, a 3 year old boy was hit by a foul ball, a painful line drive.
- See also Astros/Cubs game and Dodgers/Rockies game
- This is further proof that the teams need to extend the foul ball netting to the foul polls. Right now it is in the MLB rules to have the netting go to the end of each dugout. The White Sox and Nationals have already said that they will extend their nets on Monday.
- Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff is headed to the IL after straining his oblique on Sunday. He has been the team’s best pitcher this season.
- Nationals 1B Ryan Zimmerman seems to have reinjured his foot which he already missed 53 games for (suffering from plantar fasciitis). MRI results to follow.
- The Yankees play their rivals the Red Sox this week! Be sure to tune in
- Because there are no other sports on, here are the winners of each region in the league:
- American League
- East: Yankees
- Central: Twins (Indians just 3 games behind)
- West: Astros
- National League
- East: Braves
- Central: Cubs (Brewers just 2 games behind)
- West: Dodgers – ahead by the most 16 games
- American League
Basketball:
- Wizards offer guard Bradley Beal a 3 yr extension of his contract for $111MM. TBD if he takes it.
- Lakers have taken Kostas Antetokounmpo (Giannis’ younger brother) who played 2 games last year with the Mavericks. Giannis’ older brother (Thianis) signed with the Bucks as previously reported. I’d say basketball runs in their family.
- Bucks offered free agent guard Kyle Korver $2.6MM for a one year deal.
Football:
- Giants OL Mitch Petrus died of heat stroke in Arkansas at the age of 32 after working outside at his family’s shop all day.
- Minnesota football player, Casey O’Brien, gave the key note speech at the Big Ten Football Kickoff Luncheon. He has osteosarcoma, which is a rare form of bone cancer. You might recognize the name as this is the same cancer the Purdue fan Tyler Trent had. O’Brien is a 4x cancer survivor and now a walk-on on the Golden Gopher team!
- NFL has suspended Seahawks DT Jarran Reed for 6 games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy (aka a 2017 domestic violence case). He will miss games against the Bengals, Steelers, Saints, Cardinals, Rams and Browns.
- Former Maryland coach DJ Durkin is helping out the Falcons with their training camp. This is causing quite the stir after Durkin had a player, McNair, die after suffering a heat stroke from a team workout.
- Never seen a grown man cry? Devin White will show you. We’re thinking of you Devin!
Golf:
- Shane Lowry, an Irishman, won the Open Championship, played in Ireland for the first time in 68 years by 6 strokes over Tommy Fleetwood. It was a special sight for the fans and for Lowry. His smile was priceless.
- The World #1, Brooks Koepka, finished 4th which was remarkably his worst major championship finish this year. He becomes #1 in the FedEx Cup points after his top-5 here.
- If the Open made your bf happy: he prob picked Lowry to win with odds of 6600 to win.
- If the Open made your bf furious: he probably picked Rory McIlroy or Tiger Woods who both failed to miss the cut
- Another tournament was competed this weekend: the Barbasol championship. Jim Herman won his 2nd PGA Tour title but his first since 2016. Herman used to be an assistant professional it Trump National Bedminster in NJ where he changed his putting grip at the advice of the current president. Herman definitely feelin the #MAGA.
Olympic Sports:
- Swimming Worlds:
- Adam Peaty is the first man to win a 3rd 100m breaststroke title at Worlds in South Korea and the 1st man to ever go below 57 seconds. Peaty led the field in the Semifinals with a time of 56.88, beating his own world record, and won in the finals with a 57.14.
- There was an unlikely winner in the 100m butterfly, Margaret MacNeil (CAN), age 19, beat the favorite Sarah Sjostrom (SWE). Sarah had won the 4xs before this final.
- The 3 medalists of this race honored ailing Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee during their medal podium presentation
- Katinka Hosszu (HUN) won her record braking 4th 200m IM which equals her 400m IM titles.
- The USA won its first gold medal in the 50 fly when Caleb Dressel claimed it on Sunday with a time of 22.35. This is not an event competed at the Olympics. Dressel failed to win this event 2 years ago at the previous Worlds. If he had won then, he would’ve broken Michael Phelps’ record of 7 golds at a single world championship.
- However it’s not all good stories coming out of the swimming world championships, the event has had some bad luck with equipment malfunctions. 2 swimmers in the prelims of the 100m back complained about their wedge (which is used to grip feet better on the wall during a backstroke start). Both swimmers that notified officials were allowed to swim again, alone and both moved onto Semis.
- Simone Biles is living up to the hype again as she maintains her 6 year winning streak; this time winning the US Classic. Biles won the All-Around for a 19th time in a row. She will compete in the US again in the US Nationals meet in Kansas City, MO next month.
- The Pan American Games start Wednesday
- The Tour de France ends this weekend on the Champs Elysees. Here is how it’s shaping up so far – at the end of stage 15. FRA Julian Alaphilippe still holds the yellow jersey but GBR Geraint Thomas is only 1 minute and 35 seconds behind. Others within that 2 minute mark: NED Kruijswijk and FRA Pinot. Alaphilippe has led since the end of stage 8.
- The riders only have 5 stages to go and they will finish the race on Saturday – watch it on NBCSN @ 12:30pm.
