Baseball – MLB:

  • The Orioles/Angels game went into 16 innings and with a surprise twist the Center fielder for the Orioles came in and pitched so the team wouldn’t have to burn another pitcher. It worked too the Orioles won 10-8 after nearly 6 hours of play. Stevie Wilkerson became the position player to ever earn a save in major league history. What a clutch performance!
  • Indians’ pitcher Trevor Bauer was so frustrated after giving up the lead to the Royals that he threw the ball over centerfield as the manager came to relieve him. He did apologize.
  • The Blue Jays traded their pitcher Marcus Stroman for pitching prospects Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson from the Mets. The Mets also get $1.5MM for Stroman’s remaining salary for the year.
  • David Ortiz is glad to be home after the botched assassination attempt on his life that wasn’t meant for him that happened in the DR.
  • Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer is back on the IL after a mild rhomboid strain. TBD on timing. This is after he has been suffering through some back pain from earlier this season. In his career Scherzer had only been to the IL 2xs in his whole career, now its 2xs in one season.
  • Astros OF Jake Marisnick lost appeal of 2 game suspension which he received after a violent home plate collision that resulted in Angels catcher Lucroy getting concussed. He will miss Tues and Wed games against the Indians.
  • Because there are no other sports on, here are the winners of each region in the league:
    • American League
      • East: Yankees
      • Central: Twins (Indians just 2 games behind)
      • West: Astros
    • National League
      • East: Braves
      • Central: Cubs, Cardinals and Brewers are all tied at 56 wins
        • The Brewers have more losses with 51 (compared to the others with 49)
      • West: Dodgers

Football:

  • Some LSU news
    • DT recruit Jaquelin Roy re-committed to LSU on Friday. Yes for the 2nd time this season. He committed originally in Sept 2018, decommitted in Feb 2019 and has now recommitted. He was ranked #69 overall in the ESPN 300.
    • Former LSU WR Drake Davis was arrested Sunday for pushing and grabbing his gf. Davis has some priors.
      1. August: Arrested on a 2nd degree battery charge where he broke a woman’s ribs, strangled and punched her then proceeded to rip out her earring from her ear.
      2. Sept: Violating the court’s ruling to get Davis to stay away from the victim in case #1
      3. Sept: child porn charges
      4. So this is now the 4th arrest…. 4th!
    • UConn is paying a heavy price for leaving the AAC in 2020, $17MM to be exact. UConn will rejoin the Big east on 7/1/20 in all sports except football, ice hockey and rowing. The football program will be an independent team.
    • Pac12 is considering 9am PT games.
    • Dolphins fired their O-line coach one week into training camp. Not a good first week.
    • Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott did not show up for camp. Dallas, we (might) have a problem.

Golf:

  • Brooks Koepka won his first WGC event on Sunday, winning the WGC-FedEx Championship by 3 strokes with a score of 16 under par. This is Koepka’s 7th win on the PGA Tour and remains #1 in the world. The regular golf season ends after the Wyndham Championship this weekend. Followed by the FedEx Cup playoffs (keep in mind this year it is earlier and only 3 events instead of the usual 4).
  • Bernhard Langer won the Senior British Open by 2 shots over Paul Broadhurst on Sunday. This is Langer’s 11th senior major title, the most ever.
  • The PGA Tour was split this week as some golfers went to the Barracuda Championship in Reno. Collin Morikawa, who recently graduated from Cal, won the event just weeks after another college graduate, Matt Wolff of OSU won on the PGA Tour. Golf is proving to be a younger man’s game now.
  • The 2019/2020 season schedule was released and begins with the Greenbrier Classic on 9/12-15. The schedule includes 3 additional FedEx Cup tournaments and a week off for the Olympics in Tokyo (August 2020).

Olympic Sports:

  • Swimming Worlds Championships – Consider this the Olympic preview!
    • World Records (WR) going down everywhere – 8 in total
      • Michael Phelps has lost 2 of his 10 year old WRs this Worlds alone. Caleb Dressel broke MP’s 100m fly WR in Semis. Hungarian teenager Kristof Milak broke MP’s 200m fly WR. Only 1 MP WR remains (400m IM). Not that MP dominated the 200 fly but here are his results…
      • MP.JPG
      • New event to be competed in Tokyo 2020: Mixed medley relay ( 4x200m). The USA and Australia battled for the top spot but ultimately the Aussies took the top spot by .02 seconds. What a fun event to watch!
        • #GFHint: All the teams can choose when to put their women swimmers and men swimmers. It makes it hard to follow at first because if a team uses their men for their first 2 legs then obviously they will be significantly ahead. It keeps us on our toes!
      • WR for the USA in the 4x100m mixed freestyle relay after barely holding off AUS. Also a new event for the Tokyo Olympics.
        • #GFHint: For this relay (4x100m mixed freestyle relay) most if not all teams will put both male swimmers first so that their male swimmer will not have to swim through choppy water.
      • US Women destroy the WR in the 4x100m medley relay by about a body length. The first leg, Regan Smith, (backstroke) led off beating the WR by 0.5 seconds and the rest of the team rolled on!
      • smith 2
      • Reagan Smith broke Missy Franklin’s WR in the 200m backstroke from the 2012 Olympics. Oh and btw that was in the Semis. To put this in perspective, no one has been under the 2:05 mark in 7 years. The WR is now 2:03.35! Needless to say she went on to win gold in the final by 3 seconds. Her face is priceless.
    • Caleb Dressel also topped MP when he brought home 8 medals from this World Championships, the most ever at one meet. MP’s record was 7. Dressel won 3 golds in one night for the 2nd time in his career and brought home 6 golds in all from Worlds.
    • Some mean girl drama (but on the men’s side) AUS swimmer Ben Horton would not look at or shake hands with the gold medalist finisher CHN Sun Yang after he won the 100m free in protest as Yang is waiting on a ruling about doping allegations. GBR swimmer Duncan Scott did the same thing after the 200m free. He did not take it well(9:45 in video)
      • This is not the first time swimmers have caused a tiff over this issue. See also King/Efimova banter (pronounced: Yuh-fee-muh-vuh)
    • USA lost their record setting 9th straight world championship title in the 200m IM after Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps shared those titles for 8 years. Chase Kalisz did his best winning at the last world championships (2017) but ultimately lost this time to JPN’s Daiya Seto. The USA has owned this title so completely winning every World Championship and Olympic medal in the event since 2003 until Friday.
  • Ryan Lochte will be back after a 14 month ban at US Nationals hoping to qualify for his 5th Olympics. He was banned for using a intravenous infusion after hyping it up on social media. He will compete in 6 events.
  • Dana Vollmer, butterfly specialist, announced her retirement from competitive swimming today! She won 7 Olympic medals – 5 of them gold – over 3 games (2004, 2012 and 2016). Vollmer overcame being diagnosed with a potentially fatal cardiac electrical disorder and came back to the pool after having a child. She will be missed!

dalilah.JPG

  • US Nationals Outdoor Track meet was this weekend. This determines who rep’s the USA in the World Championships in Doha in 9/28 – 10/6.
    • Dalilah Muhammad broke the 400m hurdle WR that was 16 years old with a 52.20 and in rainy conditions!
    • sam
    • Sam Kendricks, the gentlemen of the pole vault, vaults 6.06m (19-10 ½) which is the highest outdoor vault in 25 years! And a special moment in sports after he clears the bar. Check it out!
    • lyles
      • The 200m was a great race between Lyles and Coleman (known for his 100m). If you like Dragon Ball Z, you’re now a fan of Noah Lyles.
      • Allyson Felix qualifies for her 9th straight World Championships in the 400m just 8 months after giving birth! She took 6th which will qualify her for the relay. She missed qualifying individually however. She has made every outdoor world team since 2003!
      • The 400m men’s race featured something amazing: Blake Leeper won his semifinal and placed 5th in the final without both of his legs. He was born without them and now wears prosthetics. He is waiting to hear if his prosthetics are allowed in regular competition.
      • Hardest team to make? The women’s 100m hurdles. The final featured 6 of the top hurdlers in the world right now.
    • casey
      • Also shout out to my former teammate, Patrick Casey, for making it there! He is the one on the right side of the picture on the rail. Congrats!

  • The Tour de France ended on Saturday with its first Colombian winner Egan Bernal! At only 22, he is the 2nd youngest winner in 110 years. Geraint Thomas took silver and Kruijswijk took 3rd.
    • Frenchman Alaphilippe wore the yellow jersey for 14 days but ended 5th overall.
