Baseball – MLB:

  • Red Sox 1B/DH David Ortiz was shot at a club in the Dominican Republic (where he is from). He is in stable condition and the Red Six have sent a plane to transport hi back to Boston.
    • The person responsible for shooting him was later identified at a bar and beaten by the crowd. He might look worse than Ortiz.

  • The Nationals hit 4 consecutive HRs in the 8th inning on Sunday against the Padres. The game was originally tied 1-1 going into that inning and the final score ended with 5-2. This is the 1st team to do this multiple times. The back-to- back-to- back-to- back HRs were scored by Kendrick, Turner, Eaton and Rendon.

Baseball – NCAA:

  • NCAA Baseball College World Series will start June 15th – 26th (if needed 27th) in Omaha, NE. The only games this weekend are games 1-4 with teams TBA. The tournament is double elimination until the final series which is best of 3. The bracket with the teams is above however this is not indicative of who plays who as that has yet to be announced.

Basketball – NBA:

  • Playoff Update:
    • Raptors are only one game away from taking their first NBA title as they lead the series 3-1.
    • Kevin Durant will play in Game 5 or at least he plans to. This could significantly up the Warriors chances of catching up with Thompson and Durant back. Lets see tonight.
  • Tony Parker of the Spurs (he briefly played for Hornets this last season) is retiring after 18 seasons in the league. You may also know him from being married to Eva Longoria. He won 4 NBA championships and played 1,254 games. Parker is 37.
  • The Clippers, Lakers, Knicks and Nets are all interested in NOLA’s forward Anthony Davis. These seem to be the finalists of who will negotiate for him.
  • Dwyane Wade is the winner of the Magic Johnson Award.

Football – NCAA/NFL:

  • Johnny Manziel has stated that he wants to play for the Houston XFL team. This would put him close to his home team as Texas A&M is only ~1 hour outside of Houston.
  • Texas A&M DB Derrick Tucker was arrested after assaulting a man over a disagreement about tacos. Yep, tacos.
  • UTEP QB and son of Maryland coach, Kai Locksley was charged with DWI, marijuana possession, unlawful carrying of a weapon and terrorist threat. Needless to say, Kai has been suspended from the team.
  • Miami signs OT Jalen Rivers who was ranked 32 on the ESPN 300.
  • Florida former player Tony Joiner was arrested for murdering his wife in 2016.

Golf:

  • Rory McIlroy won the RBC Canadian open by 7 shots after shooting a final round 61. He was 5 shots off the lead going into Sunday but the -9 round helps!
  • This week is the US Open at Pebble Beach, CA. Defending Champion from both 2017 & 2018 is #1 in the world Brooks Koepka. No one has ever won 3xs in a row. Phil Mickelson needs this major to complete his grand slam and he’s won at Pebble multiple times. Some people think this will be his best shot to get his last major.

Hockey:

  • Stanley Cup Playoffs Updates:
    • We are going into game 7!
    • Game 6’s win was given to Tuuka Rask who had 28 saves. In elimination games, Rask has had a 95.3% save percentage.
    • Blue’s owner Tom Stillman thanked fans for ‘bringing St. Louis their first-ever Stanley Cup’ … before it happened. This letter was published before Game 6 was even played. And now we go to game 7, I hope you don’t live to regret that letter Tom!

Horse Racing:

  • The final leg of the Triple Crown was competed in NY this Saturday at the Belmont Stakes. Sir Winston took the title with odds 10-1. Mark Casse, the trainer of Sir Winston also trained War of Will and had 0 Triple Crown wins before this year and now he has 2 with 2 different horses. This race puts an end to the very interesting year we’ve had in horse racing (reminder: winner DQ’d and a rider less horse finishing the Preakness).

Olympic Sports:

  • NCAA Track & Field Championships was this past weekend in Austin, TX June 5-8. And we watched a bunch of record fall!
    • 100m Women’s collegiate record was broken by freshman Sha’Carri Richardson with a 10.75.
      • She also broke the U20 200m record previously held by Allyson Felix, although she got 2nd.
    • Grant Holloway won the 110m hurdles for the 3rd time with a 12.98 breaking a 40 year old record. It was his closest race yet but he did it in record fashion, becoming the first person to go sub-13.
    • The 4x100m men’s Florida relay team was the first team in history to run sub-38 with a time of 37.97.
    • Texas Tech’s Oduduru (Oh-doo-roo) ran the 2nd fastest time ever in the 100m and later repeated in the 200m with a time of 19.73. These 20 points from Oduduru led the Raiders to win the men’s title.
    • It could not have been closer in the women’s team competition, coming down to the final event, the 4x400m relay. Both USC and Arkansas had 56 points and were in the 4x400m final. We will never know how it would’ve ended because USC ended up getting the baton knocked out of their hand in their 3rd leg, leaving the Razorbacks to win the team title.
  • The FIFA Women’s World Cup has started! Team USA plays their first game tomorrow @ 2pm vs Thailand. USA is in group F with Sweden, Chile and Thailand.
    • Round of 16 starts on 6/22 with the final on 7/7
  • The USOC is working through insurance reform so that athletes do not loose health insurance once they become pregnant. 3 senators (from CT, MA and WI) are getting together with the USOC on June 14th for a hearing on this subject. More to come on this.
  • The international track & field community has extended the ban on Russia, meaning that Russian athletes will compete under a neutral flag for the World Championships in Qatar.
  • The IAAF is re-branding itself as World Athletics. It has been known as the IAAF since its inception in 1912.

Tennis:

  • The French Open ended on Sunday with a familiar faced winner and a young not so well known winner.
    • Rafael Nadal won the men’s against Dominic Thiem. Thiem defeated Djokovic in a grueling 5 set match (6-2, 3-6, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5) that was delayed twice. This was Nadal’s 12th French Open title, extending his record. Nadal is 93-2 in French Open play.
    • Australian indigenous Ashleigh Barty won the women’s French Open against Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets 6-1,6-3. She was junior Wimbledon champion at age 15 and is normally known for her success on the doubles side of tournaments (she has made the final in all grand slam events but only won the US Open). This was her first grand slam title as an individual.
