Basketball – NBA:

  • The Raptors won their first NBA title over the Warriors in Game 6 with a score of 114-110. Game 6 was also the final game to ever be played in Oracle stadium.
    • Kevin Durant went out during game 5 with a different injury than his calf. After an MRI, he suffered a ruptured his right Achilles. This means that KD will be out for the entire 2019-2020 season.

Football – NCAA/NFL:

  • Here’s a day late Father’s Day gift: Arkansas gained the head coach’s favorite recruit as Chandler Morris committed to the Razorbacks to be coached by his dad, Chad Morris.
  • Texas A&M becomes the first school to lift the ban on alcohol after the SEC allowed it. Kyle Field will sell beer and wine to the general public until the end of the 3rd
  • Tennessee OL Melvin McBride is giving up football due to health reasons.
  • Treasured recruit Bru McCoy who originally was Texas’ highest recruit has now committed to USC. We will see if this one sticks since he’s been back and forth with Texas & USC for a year now.

Golf:

  • Gary Woodland won his first major title at the US Open this weekend by 3 strokes over 2 time defending champion Brooks Koepka. Gary could not have done this at a better time as he and his wife struggled with a miscarriage, a son who was born very premature (but he’s fine now) and are now pregnant with twin girls.
  • Viktor Hovland played his last tournament as an amateur in his OSU clothes and ended it in style. He scored a -4 score (total of 280) at the US Open, breaking Jack Nicklaus’ amateur US Open record of 282 from 1960. His future in golf is bright.

Olympic Sports:

  • Eunice Kirwa, Olympic silver medalist in the marathon for Bahrain, has been found guilty of doping and has been banned for 4 years; she will be 38 when the ban lifts. She will keep her silver medal as the DQ is from April 1 – May 7.

froome

  • Chris Froome underwent surgery and remains in the hospital after a high speed crash in a training ride. He suffered multiple fractures and will not compete in the Tour de France, which begins on July 6th.

Soccer:

  • The Women’s World Cup is still in group play. #ICYMI Team USA won 13-0 against Thailand, which caused some uproar about running up the score. However the tie breakers in group play is score differential, which can be a pretty convincing argument on why they did so.
    • This was the highest score in World Cup history.
  • The USA beat Chile on Saturday 3-0. The score would’ve been a lot higher but Chile’s goalie, Christiane Endler, was on fire saving 23 shots on goal.
    • Carli Lloyd became the first woman to score a goal in 6 consecutive World Cup games.

  • The USA plays Sweden on Thursday. But both of these teams will move out of Group Play.
